North Surry @ Mount Airy

As MA Stud says, we should have everyone back and healthy. On a talent basis, MA should win going away in this game.
But North Surry is one of the two largest rivalries, other being East Surry.

The real questions to me are:
A. Will MA be ready as a TEAM? Emotions can be a problem; but they can be a blessing.
B. Has the Coaching staff learned they need a new game plan?
C. Have they had time to put it into place?

The last time North Surry beat Mount Airy was in 2006, and by only 1 point, 27-26.
Since 2001, North Surry has only won one game in 2006, and Mount Airy is on a 17-game winning streak.
Since 1959, Mount Airy has an advantage of 45 wins to North Surry 19 and 1 tie.
The only year they have not played each other is 2020 since North Surry became a high school by consolidating 3 or 4 smaller high schools. In 2020, due to COVID-19, football was played in March and April.

North Surry comes into Friday's game with a 4-1 record, and Mount Airy a 3-2 record, with North Surry playing the weaker schedule.

I would say both schools played appropriate schedules based on their level of talent. RE, would you prefer they go back to the option attack? Serious question.

Serious answer; with either JK or Kelly as the coach in charge, this schedule would have been fine, win, lose or draw.
Going away from the system that absolutely worked, not being able to keep players on the field, and have no real offensive identity I am not sure what type of schedule would have worked.
Also, in a serious answer, the schedule this exposed the coaching deficiencies quickly, even in the 3 wins.

I believe this head coach has the ability to be a good coach, and a successful one. But he needs to step up very quickly, get settled in an offensive system that works, and step up his control of the defense and a coaching staff that might have been good enough when led by JK and Kelly, but does not appear to be good enough on their own.

The coach is 3-2 losing two games that they expected to lose on paper, especially with the players that were hurt.

So my question is, are you all the same fans that called for Adkins firing after a 40 point loss to ES in 2018? Or what about when he lost 4, yes 4 games in 2019? One of those games being in the first round of playoffs to a MICS team?!

Did you also call out Kelly when he got beat 20-0 by a 4-7 Surry Central team? He also lost 4 other games (including a second round exit to Mitchell). Believe this was 2015-ish.

Lets be real and honest for a second and understand that this years MA team isn't even close to what they were last few years. Not saying Taylor is a good or bad coach, but just because he doesn't call the game the way you bleacher coach's expect doesn't make him wrong. Even if Adkins or Kelly is coach this year, either one is 3-2 with this team and that record.

Can't believe I'm standing up for MA but dang you fans are something else. The dude is in his 2nd year of being a head coach. The same fans calling him out would be upset if MA let him go coach somewhere else. I honestly think some of you just live miserable lives at this point.

Hats off to Coach Taylor for playing the #1 SOS this season. No more playing Teams like Ashe, north stokes, south stokes Elkin etc. Have played 4 dang good teams and a really good ST Stephen's TEAM Watauga #1 ranked in 6A. Thinking back if MA had injuries could always play without those players and still wIN with the schedule they had. This year not even! I think MA wins out regular season if they stay healthy bc they have no depth. Could be 8-2 going into playoffs. RPI ok now but who knows how other teams will finisH. I for one am good if MA never wins another anything. Have seen my alma mater play in 5 State Titles and win 3 so heck man im good!

I remember sitting in MA stands watching their 2008 team play in the playoffs (best MA team I've ever seen with my own eyes).
I think they were playing South Stanley? Pretty sure they put up 50 on them - which they did most games that year - and listening to 2 older gentlemen talking about how if they would get in the Power I they would be REALLY good!!! I think they ended up like top 2 or 3 in NCHSAA history for scoring in a single season and it still wasn't good enough. Those MA fans have all the answers lol

At this time all I can do is compare schedules.

North Surry’s schedule so far.

2A 8th 4-1 Allegheny - lost 28-20

3A 30th 3-2 West Wilkes - won 7-3

2A 34th 2-3 Patrick County - won 41-17

3A 38th 2-2 North Wilkes - won 37-14

3A 42nd 1-4 Northwood - won 42-15
——————————————————
Mount Airy’s schedule so far.

2A 4th 4-2 Starmount - won 21-6

2A 7th 3-2 East Wilkes - won 23-16

6A 2nd 5-0 Watauga - lost 61-7

4A 5th 4-2 Jefferson Forest - lost 42-7

6A 43rd 2-3 St. Stephens - won 36-28
——————————————————
What would North Surry’s record be with Mount Airy’s schedule?
Also what would Mount Airy be with North’s scheduled?

As for the RPI ranking thats a joke.
If the playoffs started this Friday North Surry would be ranked 3rd in 4A with 1st playoff game at home.
They have yet to play a 4A or higher school.
I predict the same thing will happen like last year.
A visiting team like East Rutherford who was 6th in the state will come to town and win the first round.

Gracious, this 2025 class of the online Bear faithful is something…cannibalizing their own. Lot of Surry county Nick Saban’s within city limits if I didn’t know any better. Honestly surprised any school within a 50 mile radius keeps their coach with amount of armchair talent sitting in the bleachers on Friday nights…

Again, MA hadn’t lost a regular season game
Since 2022 before this season - they scheduled up and that’s good for them. Also,
no one around here would play them. As for NS - they lost to Alleghany by 8 (Trojans are 4-1 and prob beat Starmount if they make a couple of XPs) - I would guess most folks have NS 4th in league and their non conf schedule is the 4th toughest out of the 6 teams in that league. It’s all relative to your talent and what’s best for your school. Wonder if WS and ES are happy being 1-4 with brutal schedules - maybe they were told no by local schools in neighboring counties - makes Scheduling even tougher

To be precise, Mount Airy has the most points scored, 3 out of the top 9 listed in the most points scored in a season of 13 or more games. Also, this was done with the 2nd string playing the 2nd half in most of the games. Not even Shelby or Reidsville has topped spots #3 & 4. East Surry came close in 2019 the year they beat Reidsville & Tarboro.

Mount Airy will do well to score 350 to 400 pts this year.

MOST POINTS IN A SEASON (13+ GAMES)
1) Albemarle 898 2001
2) Albemarle 850 2002
3) Mount Airy 845 2008
4) Mount Airy 809 2023

5) Maxton (13 games) 804 1975
6) East Surry 799 2019
7) Reidsville 785 2019
8) Mount Airy 777 2022
9) Hickory 767 1996

I think some of the scheduling headaches by these two schools plus Mt. Airy was complicated by the lateness and ever changing conferences. Also their recent successes added to some not wanting to schedule them.

I love how when teams that are normally good (constantly make deep playoff runs) have a "down" or not so good year and they all bring up the past. I'm glad in 2008 MA scored so many points. Let me know how that makes them better in the game against NS in 2025 😂

Also, those history books are only as accurate as coaches/ADs/etc keep them.

This was posted several times since the years the records were set and posted the years the records were set. If you want to take the time to look at MaxPreps, the scores are also available there. Also, did you miss the part I said they would do good to score 350 to 400 points this year, and my post was to someone else who had brought up 2008.

SO THIS IS THE FIRST DOWN YEAR IT HAS BEEN POSTED ! !

What some of these outstanding knowledgeable haters of Mt Airy do not apparently understand about Mt Airy this year is that from top to bottom they are as talented as any Mt Airy in the past 10-12-15 years.
The only difference now is they do not have a Kelly Holder led staff or a JK Adkins led staff on broad.

This staff might get there, and all MT Airy fans hope so, but unfortunately, they have not yet shown they are on that path.
Hope they get there starting with Friday night. However, my guess is that North Surry will come here with a full determination to show they deserve to be on the same field as Mt Airy.
And until, the Bears set the record straight, the Greyhounds do.

This team is not what they had 3-4 years ago and damn sure aren't close to that 2008 OR 2009 team. Doesn't matter who the coach is this year.

I am no hater of MA. It does not change my life one way or another if MA goes 16-0 and sets the world record in points scored with giving up 0 OR if they go 0-10 and don't score a point all year. I just find you delusional MA fans hilarious. If a team isn't praised by all and doesn't beat everyone easily, it's because we're all haters and the coach lacks the ability to coach, call plays, etc. Let's not forget that at the end of the day, these are 14-18 year old boys on the field.

I don't see it happening, but I hope NS does win, just to witness the meltdown from all the grown folks on here.

They do have 4 kids with D1 offers and a bevy of other talented kids. If it all comes together for the MA they could be playing Shelby in the state semis imo. I think their coaching is very solid, but what do I know? I also feel HC at North has done a good job the last three seasons after a ugly first season. Probably not enough horses in the stable, but seems his teams seem to play hard. The meltdown on here would be of epic proportions.

It would make the conference interesting if NS wins.

TD, don’t take it personally. Maxpreps is relatively accurate, but only as good as whether all schools input accurate information. Neither Maxpreps, nor Scorestream, nor the NCHSAA record book is infallible. There are many discrepancies in that last one.

Who are the 4 D1 players and where do they have offers?
