Week 1 went about as expected except for an upset loss by Alexander Central to Newton Conover. Week 2 could have more close games.

Alexander Central @ Hickory

I'm not sure if Newton Conover is much improved or if AC is going to struggle this season. This week will be tough as Hickory will look to rebound from a hard fought loss to South Point.

Hickory 41
Alexander Central 22

Freedom @ Draughn

Freedoms stroll through Burke County teams continues. This one should be over quickly. Freedom won't be challenged until week 4 or 5 when they play AC Reynolds and TC Roberson. Draughn had a couple good years but are really struggling now.

Freedom 49
Draughn 7

McDowell @ Mitchell

The Titans played in one of the closest week 1 games and this one could also be close. McDowell has to clean up some penalty issues and needs to run the ball better to stick around with Mitchell. McDowell can throw the ball pretty well this year and has some decent WRs. Can they match Mitchell's physicality and stop their running game?

Mitchell 28
McDowell 24

South Caldwell @ Hibriten

Shootout incoming? South Caldwell allowed 26 points to West Caldwell in the first half before shutting them out in the 2nd. Hibriten had a tough win over East Wilkes. I expect a lot of points here but Hibriten has the better defense and will get a couple more stops.

Bunker Hill @ St Stephens

Saint has a tough non conference schedule and could be looking at a 1-4 record when conference play starts. Bunker Hill should win fairly easily.

Bunker Hill 41
St Stephens 20

TC Roberson @ Watauga

This could be a sneaky good game. Watauga has a lot of new varsity starters that played well in their easy win over Ashe. Roberson will be a tougher test and has some athletes and solid running back. Watauga should win but I expect a competitive game.

Watauga 34
Roberson 21

Don't you have Roberson in the top 10 power rankings for WNC on another thread, but have Watauga beating Roberson next Friday? Is Watauga that good or Roberson overrated? And if so, why isn't Watauga in those power rankings?

I don't include Watauga. This is WNC from Avery County southwest. If i did include them, they would be in the top 3.

This week may be an early indication of how the conference race will play out. If Alexander, SC and Watauga have good showings against their opponents, then that could signal a tight race. We probably won't know what kind of team Freedom is going to have until they play TCR and ACR in a few weeks. I'm really interested to see RPIs when they come out, because I'm curious to see if the conference champ will get a first-round bye.

It's Watauga and Freedom and a big gap to anyone else. McDowell and St Stephens may battle for 3rd if AC and South Caldwell is as bad as it looks right now
