Not gloating, because we didn't beat UM, SC did, but this is brutal.

Rough indeed.

<font size="2" face="Arial, Helvetica"><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Ole Miss</span> isn't a great football team. Ole Miss isn't even a very good football team. So what is Ole Miss? I'll tell you. Ole Miss is an example of the dangers of groupthink and greatness-by-association. Ole Miss football represents many of the evils that plague society.</font>

That is hilarious. I liked this part.

"<font face="Arial, Helvetica" size="2">One of those lessons is this: Never, ever take the Ole Miss football program seriously. Not this seriously, anyway. No. 4? Ole Miss? Look -- in a pretty good year, Ole Miss will be the No. 4 team in the SEC West. In a very good year, Ole Miss will be the No. 4 team in the entire conference. But No. 4 in the country? Ole Miss? Come on. Archie Manning isn't walking through that door again. John Fourcade, maybe. But not Archie."</font>

i have a better question that involves not just Ole Miss.

Why are teams ranked pre-season? based on what? scouts? assumptions? lots of things that he pointed out in that article?

Maybe we should rank teams at the beginning of the season FOR FUN if thats all its for, but it should NOT be one of the major factors into who gets to get into that BCS bowl game, which by the way, is calculated partially based on average poll rating, which is totally unfair. Did USC really deserve to be ranked as high as they were? no way. we should wait until the 5th week to rank teams. By that time everyone has played at home, on the road, at least one game in their conference and 1 or 2 other games both outside of their conference. then and only then rank teams based on whats on the field, not on conjecture, not because a team is a member of the SEC, not because a team has was 40 national championships, not because a team was ranked #1 of all last year.

It should be what teams do on the field. PERIOD. end of issue. end of story.

Although I thought he got plenty wrong as well. He's right that UM and Snead were never as good as so many thought they were. I was baffled all summer when the top 10 talk started getting bandied about. I thought they'd have a decent team this year, maybe even snag a pre-season ranking, but top 10? Never would have thought it. But not wanting to make too big of an *** of myself, I didn't do much preaching on the subject. I just waited for, what I assumed would be, the inevitable loss. It came quicker than I thought it would, but it came.

And he's right about the media, the polls, the pundits, etc. The pre-season polls especially are a joke. But I think most of us already knew that. UM was ranked too high to begin with, but with the unwritten rules of the polls, the voters had to slide them up into the top 5 when other teams got beat.

I do think he goes wrong when he suggests that UM can <span style="font-style: italic;">never</span> be a top 5 team. I think they can be. Just like I think we can be one day. I don't like the idea of dismissing a team outright just because they aren't a traditional powerhouse. Teams besides Florida and LSU and USC <span style="font-style: italic;">can</span> win a national championship. It's harder for teams like UM, sure. But it could happen. It wasn't going to happen this year, not with the team UM has, but it <span style="font-style: italic;">could</span> happen.

And then he gets into some general SEC and Tebow bashing. He thinks both the SEC and Tebow are overrated. I disagree. And in the end the article comes off as a hate piece against the SEC. Heck, it was the SEC fans that mostly agreed with him that UM was not <span style="font-style: italic;">that</span> good. He just wants to take a pop at the SEC and any non-traditional powerhouse school. That I don't agree with.

But at least he got in plenty of nasty swipes at UM.

I've said something similar many times. Although maybe not for quite the same reasons.

They ought to wait until we are a few weeks into the season before putting out any polls. That still wouldn't solve all of the problems, but it would help. It will never happen though. Those preseason polls make too much money. Too many magazines get sold on that alone.

I think there can still be pre-season polls. Let all the sports writers, the coaches and media rank them...FOR FUN and for people and Mickey Mouse to still talk about. They should NOT be used in any BCS or post season formula though that determines the higher end bowl games and ultimately the national championship - thats the distinct difference i want to make. I dont see why the polls still cant make money and why people still would not talk about it.

I seriously think an Ole Miss guy stole Doyel's first wife. He hates us with a passion. That guy looks for every possible chance to dump on us. Trust me, he enjoyed our game last night as much as you did, if not more.

Mashek at the Biloxi Sun-Herald always treated Sherrill with such disdain, I really thought it might BE personal.

Maybe the Daily Journal can import Doyle to replace 2HD and balance Mashek in one stroke.

I totally disagree that we shouldn't have preseason polls. Everything gets sorted out by the end anyway, and people end up where they are supposed to, which is all that matters.
So why not have them, because it pisses us off to see Ole Miss with a 4 beside their name??? They'll move down once they lose 2-3 games.
Even if we didn't have AP or coaches polls, there would be "mock" polls that would shape the first AP and coaches polls in week 3,4, or whatever

coming to all these conclusions after the first SEC game that was on the road?

I got a kick out of it just based on my lifetime disdain of the rebels but this guy let's his childish emotions dictate his writing that he actually gets paid for... kinda embarassing for those who pay him if you ask me

thank goodness the game was not 65 minutes long...
