I wonder what the ransom is? I know of a small business this happened to and it was $500 and the owner paid immediately. Obviously this situation is much more but if it’s a few hundred thousand they better pay it and move on. Several million…….then it’s a tougher decision.
I bet it’s more like 10s of millions. And as others have pointed out good chance you don’t get your data back anyway.

My son flipped our SxS and crushed his forearm. Literally the only thing holding it together at both the forearm and elbow were skin and nerve tissue. We spent 27 days in UMMC, 20 in their Cardiac ICU. He had 18 surgeries to rebuild his arm and elbow. The doctors and nurses and everybody else there were ABSOLUTELY AMAZING. I'll meet anybody at South Farm who says a bad word about UMMC.
I have done a lot of "business" with UMC over the last several years and in the process dealt with many of their employees. I have yet (knock on wood) to meet one who wasn't kind and helpful from department heads on down . Hard to find that in big businesses of any kind these days these days.

I'll echo this. Recently had a family member suffer head trauma from an unexplained fall. UMMC delivered amazing care. Could not have been more impressed with the quality of care. Had the occasional nurse with a bad attitude (invariably overweight, white, man-less, bitter), but overall the care was exceptional. Had a 5 foot tall female Lebanese internal medicine doc who I would stack up against any specialist around. Me and Magnolia Hunter will be back-to-back at South Farm when any MFer who wants to bad mouth UMMC is ready.

I swear man. I spend 2 hours a day logging in after getting timed out cause I left for 15 minutes. Takes 15 minutes just to open what I need to start the day.
All of the security is a productivity killer. The C-Suite and higher ups do not get this. They still want us to hit our utilization and efficiencies, but it is like we are standing on the gas and brake pedals at the same time. They know that if people care enough about their work, they'll just work overtime to make up for the time loss.

Having lived through a successful ransomware attack some years back, I still say the answer is to declare hacking terrorist activity and have the CIA sanction a few with accompanying press conferences afterwards.
Literally had the thought this morning it should be claimed terrorist activity. One day, someone is going to figure out how to catch these thugs. And I hope they spend the rest of their lives in jail thinking about the fact that they probably could have named their price and lived an extremely comfortable life doing something legal and even ethical.

That’s what I hope, anyway.

Yep, same thing happened to my employer and we didn't pay the ransom. IT had to wipe and re-map every single computer in the whole organization. Took weeks. If you pay the ransom there's still no guarantee they'll give you access back to the system. A lot of these attacks are coming from Russia. Commie bastards......
Or China

"No judgment"... only that MAGA people think Hitler is cool. Got it.
Not all MAGA folks, but certainly some of them. Even the Heritage Foundation, the leading think tank of the MAGA movement, has argued that reasonable people can agree to disagree on whether Hitler "was good." They have to make those statements in order to keep the MAGA tent as wide as possible. You can't alienate the far right from the movement. Again, no judgement: It's just politics. You cannot argue with their success.

Comparing the VA to UMMC made me chuckle. I work at both, and the two shouldn’t be in the same conversation. I know this will probably go against popular opinion, but I think UMMC is likely the best out of the three big metro area hospitals. It’s where I’d bring my family if I needed.
I’ve been to the VA hospital once (and it was recently). I thought i was in a horror movie. Halls leading to nowhere, room numbering that had zero logic and no one knows where anything is.

That was years ago. And honestly it was a colossal waste of money. 1, one, uno laptop got lost. UMMC KNEW that it did not contain any sensitive data on it. However, they did not have the technical controls on it to definitively prove that it did not have any data. Ask your IT friend about it. If he's been there long enough, he will confirm.

ETA: It kind of boggles the mind that such a fine could be levied for such a minor event, but alas, 'tis so.

My sister has a joint appointment at a Med School and VA Center…

I’d think the medical school hospital would be better in many cases.

BTW, many years ago, I worked at Stanford University Hospital doing grunt work before coming back to Mississippi for graduate school. That was a part-time gig but then I also got a PT job at a lab near the Palo Alto VA…

I could get paid separately by the VA or by Stanford. I chose Stanford and became a full-time employee.

It was a Union gig— United Stanford Workers— but the guy who came by knew I wasn’t going to be there for long

If the cost of living weren’t quite so high, I’d stay there but 35+ years later, I’m in Mississippi…
