Compared to Kirilenko in Utah, or at least a poor man's version. Offensively he can't do the things that Kirilenko can, but defensively he would provide the athletic presence around the rim being able to provide solid help defense. He would never be able to play the 5, and depending on the type of team, he probably couldn't play the 4.
You put him at New York, Golden State, or Phoenix where they would play him at the 3/4 hybrid position.
I think Bill Simmons had a great article about the NBA being a specialty league: 3 point shooting, defensive stoppers, rebounders, scorers, and distributors and that if a player can do one thing great, the NBA will find a place for that player. Well Varnado is a great shot blocker and is athletic. He also has a quick dunk move that can be effective. On the right team he could get minutes and provide some defense and rebounding and possibly some garbage points.
This year's draft is supposedly really piss poor, and though most years Varnado wouldn't get drafted in the first round, maybe he does this year, I doubt it though. I don't think another year does anything to improve that, so what it comes down to is whether he wants to go to work and try and get on a team and/or D-league or put off doing that for another season and have fun in college.
Its a tough call.</p>
