I just got laid off from an insurance job that I have had for the past 9 years. (Started right after graduating from State.)
I am a claims manager in Tupelo, MS.
My wife is due to have our first child together in September.
I am freaking out and need help.
If any of you know of any openings in North Mississippi or Memphis, please let me know.

I know this is my first post and some of you may blast me but I am desperate.</p>

I, too, got laid off this past Friday. I know it is easy to get freaked out but it might be the time to seriously look at "what you want to do when you grow up." With a child coming, obviously the need for income/employment is great but I would encourage you to look at what skills you have and see if there is something sitting there that really fits you well. It might be the exact same thing you were doing but it might not. Look at your strengths and then make a plan.

Not trying to sound like a career coach....probably talking to myself through talking to you. Good luck.

Good luck on the job search. Also, let me give you some advice. If you are at the hospital while your child is being born and some hospital worker walks up to you and wants to discuss the great job Croom and Templeton did, simply walk away. Please don't threaten to assault them, shoot them, whup ***, buss a cap in their azz, or sexually molest them. Just walk away.

and you have at least 18 hours of graduate credit in one discipline (English, history, etc.), then try to get an adjunct teaching position for the fall semester (or summer). There is the Ole Miss campus in Tupelo, as well as Northeast CC and Itawamba CC. I know that MSU (Meridian) pays $3,000 / class for teaching in an adjuct capacity, and community colleges typically pay around $1,600 / class. You won't get rich doing it, but it might help you out while you're in limbo. The only stipulation is that you must have a Master's degree and 18 graduate hours in a specific discipline.

I myself just regained employment. File for unemployment, even though it sucks in Mississippi. Treat looking for a job LIKE a job, i.e. do it all damn day. Don't get down on yourself, esp around your (pregnant) wife.

Wait tables/bartend if you have to - a) you can oftentimes screw the Uncle (other posters may have strategies on that) and b) it generally allows you mornings/afternoons to look for a real gig.

I been adjusting in Tupelo for about 18 years. If I hear of anything I'll shoot you an email. Who were you working for in Tupelo. You can PM if you don't want to post it here.
