there has to be a very good reason for him to have gone on record. There is absolutely no way I can believe he did this just because he felt like rocking the boat. If he did, I don't care what sort of icon he is at MSU, he needs to get blackballed and erased from the record books for being the world's biggest dubmass.

MSU has absolutely nothing to gain from this other than trying to clear our name to make sure we don't go down as well. There is no gain for us by taking on more powerful programs and indirectly implicating them in a situation as large as this. So, it can't be us, barring gross incompetence.

Bond was interviewed back in Sept or so by the NCAA. I'm sure the reporters have been hounding him for interviews ever since. Most likely they eventually told him that they were going to run with the story with his name in it whether he provided any quotes or not. At that point the prudent thing to do is make a good written statement and then have no further comment. He did that and it was the right thing to do.

"Who has the most to gain?"

I'm not sure which team or individual does, but I can say pretty confidently that MSU and Bond don't have anything to gain by bringing this up. We've already played Auburn this year. I doubt anyone on the staff harbors any realistic hopes that we're going to Atlanta, since we're in 4th place in the west at this point. Bond doesn't get any money from making these claims. If it was a long-term benefit type of thing (like maybe, we would get a few recruits we wouldn't have if Auburn is on probation next year), then why not wait until after the season? My point is, what good does this do MSU, really?

There are only a couple of teams that stand to measurably gain by this story breaking now... One of which I'm sure you can guess.

However, the truth here is close to what Whistler said above -- the story was going to break with or without a statement from JB, and basically he/we had one chance to get his story out ahead of the New York Times, and yesterday was it.

MSU's athletic department and football program have had more important things to deal with the last few days. I doubt Bond thought it would be great to have this bomb go off 2 hours before a memorial service.

its obvious from the Bond interview that the NCAA is now all over this and they are not taking any results of an Auburn "internal" investigation as the end result of this. And that right tells me there is some SERIOUS smoke somewhere. To be honest, especially at this point, its not in Auburn's best interest to find any wrongdoing given they have played Cam all year and have SO much to lose if he does not continue playing.

why all the Urban-related rumors? I don't see how he has that much to gain either at this point... Unless they win the East, I guess, then Cam could have an affect on the Gators.

Side note, I have heard rumblings about an incident at UF even prior to the laptop theft. So maybe Urban just holds one hell of a grudge...

Why does anyone have to have anything to gain? Maybe Meyer and Mullen were pissed of at someone in their conference running around spending 6 figures on a QB. Maybe they just got tired of seeing **** like this happen so they told what they knew. Why does it have to be anything more than that?
