Q: How difficult is it to not just let the young guys get out and go?

Lem: It’s gonna get to that point, right? I’ve been trying to go with the older guys but we’ll have to look and see.

Q: Is it still pretty wide open on the defensive alignment too?

Lem: We have it all over the field right now. We’re trying to figure it out. Our guys don’t realize it. I have to play the best defensive team. That’s a big one.

Well, if you take him at his word we should be seeing some new faces out there. LF should especially be concerned along with 3/4ths of our pitching staff.

Speaking of the letting the young guys take over: I know this was likely lost in yesterday's debacle but we had 3 true freshman throw a combined 8 innings and only gave up 1 earned run.
I thought our recruiting sucked? That's what I heard on here anyway.

I hear you, but I'll have to see him benching Forsythe before I believe it. And even then, I still might not believe it.
Maybe not right away but he will have lane on a short leash. A shortstop fielding .800 and hitting .100 isn't a hill he is willing to die on. He said as much in his post-game. Shortstop was specifically called out.

I'll still have to see it to believe it. We've rolled with Lane for two years of similar results.

I beg to differ. It is early so the numbers are easily skewed by an individual result but he is one shy of the total number of errors he made all of last season. Big, big difference.

2023 3 errors in 11 attempts (.786) BA .077
2022 4 errors in 125 attempts (.969) BA .273
2021 13 errors in 174 attempts (.930) BA .231

Fielding averages are very misleading, as are batting averages. I've always felt that Forsythe is overrated defensively. He doesn't have great range and his arm is average at best. I'm not overreacting to a bad start in 2023. He's the same player he's been.

you should be looking at his OBP instead of his BA offensively. He's an auto-out in the nine hole and has been for 2+ years.

What that tells me is he's a proven good shortstop and the 3 errors in 4 games is a fluke stat that will regress back to the mean of about 8 or so errors for the season (and the BA to about .250). Now if he makes 3 more in the next 4 games, that's a different story.

The thing about LF, is that Lemonis loves him like he is his first born son....something has got to give.....last year he was good, not great at SS....as someone mentioned, his OBA is terrible, even with hitting .273

Rumor has it Mershon is slightly injured.....but Mershon is supposed to be in competition with LF, or for an IF position.....he can rake it at the plate and is as good if not better than LF defensively....going to be hard to keep him off the field when he gets healthy

I'm a little lost on the "our guys don't realize it" line.

Is he saying they're playing like they don't think they can be benched?

I'm sure they realize it. Coaches often overtalk things and end up regretting it. "Wrong place, wrong time."

There was another error at SS for a couple of innings the other day when his throw pulled Larry off of the bag. They took it off the board after a couple of innings but I don't think they added a hit for VMI. It either had to be a hit or an error on a FC because no oit was recorded.

Yep. Lane needs to be a utility backup, if that. We don't need him at short because he does not make a single play someone else couldn't do. His arm is weak, he has limited range, and he cannot bat.

Does Mershon have a broken leg or a broken arm? If not, then he needs to be out there. Can't be much worse than Lane. Dude can't make a play if he has to move towards third or second. Hence all the terrible throws.

I don’t know if I’ve ever mentioned this on here, but I coached baseball for 17 years after playing in JC. He looks and sounds like a coach that has lost some confidence. This happens with mounting pressure and coaches begin to press, try to do too much, instead of allowing the guys to just play. He’s too tight. It happens, been there, done that. Coaches are humans. Had a year like this, had plenty of talent, but I meddled way too much. I believe that’s what he’s doing.

And I’m not sure what Foxhall’s problem is, but I have not seen our pitchers improve much under him. I think he may be teaching from a more philosophical & mental aspect that’s not a one size fits all. Everyone is different and you have to approach them differently. I don’t know this for sure, but it makes sense given my experience & what I’ve seen. Lemonis & Foxhall, for that matter, haven’t just forgotten how to coach.
