The medieval cathedral was completed in the 13th Century and today, with its towers, spire, flying buttresses and stained glass, is considered a feat of architecture as much as a religious symbol.

It is one of Paris' most popular attractions, drawing an estimated 13 million visitors a year.

Today, it is in flames.

France, once one of the bastions of the Catholic faith, has witnessed a rising number of attacks on its Roman Catholic churches. A fire at St. Sulpice, considered the second biggest church within Paris city limits, has brought to attention other instances of church vandalism which have rocked the French faithful. A prominent newspaper carried an article on this subject, mentioning several other churches which were vandalized, like Aveyron’s Saint Jean des Balmes, and the instance of teenagers urinating into holy water at the Villeneuve de Berg church in Ardeche. French media do not prioritize reports about churches getting vandalized.

That happened last month

Why would media AND the catholic church not want to report on this?

Anyone know the story on this? Is it confirmed as arson or is everyone just assuming?

It just happened...but the assumption is it related to renovations being done.

We know churches in Paris have been under attack, and we know the media/church have downplayed those attacks....for some odd reason. If I'm the Pope and somebody is burning up my churches I want heads to roll...or whatever Godly action is appropriate, lots of prayer or something. But I want attention drawn to the matter.

I understand how massive of a structure it is but don’t understand how it took 2 or 3 hours to get water on it. Around here, you will have half a dozen volunteer fire departments arriving in minutes to put out some hick’s meth lab fire.

Paris is a lesser place now. Very sad.

I think this will cause sprinkler systems to be installed in all those old European cathedrals. I love visiting those but admit they've long all run together.

Great flying buttress example when viewed from the outside rear.

I heard this story once about when the Germans were occupying Paris and they had to retreat back. They wired Notre Dame to blow, but they had to leave one guy in charge of hitting the switch. And the guy, the soldier, he couldn't do it. You know, he just sat there, knocked out by how beautiful the place was. And then when the allied troops came in, they found all the explosives just lying there and the switch unturned, and they found the same thing at Sacre Couer, Eiffel Tower. Couple other places I think...

Change your tampon Mashburned. Good lord you are a *****.

My wife and daughter were just there on Spring Break. I am glad my youngest got to see it.

I was there last year. I had a time scheduled to climb the tower and then go in and tour it. I said to myself, "You know, I have dinner reservations in a couple hours and I need to take a shower. This place ain't going nowhere. Pass". :grimace:

There was a lot of construction going on - you can see the scaffold in some of the pictures. My guess is it could be from welding or other construction activity.
