Now that I am off the ledge about our basketball team.....

Looking back, close losses on the road to Vandy and Florida still piss me off but there were some encouraging things in those games. We did move the ball a little better and we did not show any quit.I think a 6-2 finish is very possible to get us to 22-8 going into the SEC tournament.
I think weare going to get hot starting Thursday. Looking back at last year our guys responded pretty well when backed into a corner (ie wins against Florida,OM,SC,LSU, and UT to close out). I think we will do it again this year.

Disclaimer: Lose Thursday and we are screwed.

and highlights our 4 losses to teams outside the top 100 (Rider, WKU, Ark, and Bama (They are borderline)).

People have to start realizing how crushing these losses.

The Bama and Arkansas losses aren't that bad since they were on the road and both are on the fringe of the Top 100. The WKU and Rider losses are the biggest problem for your resume right now, and those two losses put even more pressure on you to pick up more Top 50 wins to balance them out.

They are devastating losses but I also think that Bama and Arkansas will be within the RPI top 100 before the end of the year so that would leave us with Rider and WKU as questionable losses. Regardless, I think 22 wins is the magic number with at least one being against OM,UT, or UK and no more losses to cruddy teams.

shocker

If this team misses the NCAA Tourney, it will be worse than Mississippi's football season...they at least salvaged their season with a Cotton Bowl bid...the NIT does not equal Cotton Bowl

Key game as Auburn and LSU wins won't get you much. Even with a win, we need to go to at least Sat. in the SEC to have a chance. Maybe NCAA freedom happens today and we get new outlook on BB!

The hype around our basketball team was due to a player who hasn't played 1 minute yet this year. OM had the 'most talented team to ever suit up' or something like that, according to most rebel fans, with a perfect schedule to boot. This is the same basketball team we had last year that would have missed the Tournament last year had we not won the SECT. They're just not as good as some of y'all want to make them out to be, especially without Mr. Sidney.

This makes a lot of sense. Unfortunately, it's fact based, which is a no-noin any C34 argument.

No, I think we all realize they just aren't that good. Its becoming painfully obvious. We just hoped that a team returing nearly all its production would get better. I guess that's being unrealistic.

its not like they played a good game, we just stunk the place up worse. At least when we got beat by Rider they played exceptionally well and shot the ball and put up 88 points. The WKU game was UGLY by both teams.

....we should've been a top 25 team without Sidney. We were a potential top 15 team with him. Instead, we could very well get our bubble burst in early February. Translation = we stink. Again, this is the worst job Stansbury has ever done.

I hate to blame any one single player, but Dee Bost's regression or sophomore slump or whatever you want to call it is preventing us from 'taking it to the next level'. Coming into this season, I really felt he could be good enough to make an NBA roster one day. Maybe that was completely unrealistic, but it just seemed like he was that good last year and would automatically get better. Hopefully he can turn things around, but if not, we have no shot of making a run this year.

Like the swallows of capistrano. Each year during February, MSU fans flock to the message boards to discuss the nearly impossible scenarios which must take place (because of early season bad losses) to earn a spot in NCAAs.

Every year.......lose to a couple of terrible teams early. Win a few SEC games. Sit around and pray selection Sunday.

I am predicting, we finish 6-3. We earn a home game for the NIT.

I completely disagree with the "hype" surrounding our team coming from Renardo Sidney. In my opinion, the consensus at the start of the seasonwas that we were a top 25 team WITHOUT Renardo and a top 10 team with him.

We have most definitely not played like a top 25 team.

so why should we be this year? Everyone was humming on Kodi's nuts after what he showed in the SECT last year and this year he has done nothing but jack up dumb shot after dumb shot, while never playing any defense. Everyone thought he'd be the difference this year and that Stans was a complete fool to not play him much last season. Who's looking like he knew what he was doing last year now? Everyone also thought our point guard play would progress, not regress, which it has done. Without good point guard play, it's hard to get any kind of an offense going. Ultimately, our play is all on Stans' shoulders, but everyone's expectations of us being a Top 25 team were due to a player that really isn't that damn good in the first place (Kodi) and the quarterback of the team, who is a shell of his former self from last year. We're just not the team we thought we were.

that's a very big IF. don't forget that we were swept by auburn last year. who knows which team shows up for us on any given night.

we have lost 4 of our last 5. granted, those 4 losses came on the road. and we close with 5 homes games and only 3 away games. maybe i have lost hope, but i see us going 4-4 down the stretch.

are you idiots making excuses for Stansbury once again for his shortcomings as a coach...

Its likeStansbury is the girl at the high school prom with Down Syndrome and people cheer cause she is doing all she can do with her life...you guys support him because he is doing the best he can do, and always want him to take the easiest route in doing so

Riek? Lewis?

The two we hoped would provide some help, Smith and Sidney, can't play.

Ignored in this discussion is our glaring lack of depth. Benock and Turner are it. No Smith. No Beckham. No Sidney. No Bailey. Give us those four players and this would be a completely different team. As I'm sure you're aware. Doesn't fit your agenda, but you're aware nonetheless.

the 96 team played basically8 players. Do you realize we played minutes that year with Ty Washington (as a true freshman) and Russell Walters on the frontline? Richard Williams got 2 true freshman subs to play alot in Washington and Bart Hyche. Bart-freaking-Hyche

We play 9 players every game. 9

It is ridiculous we cant get 5-6 minutes a game out of Lewis or Riek and maybe 3 more out of Kodi at the 5 to rest Jarvis. Ridiculous.

Its not the lack of depth- its the way the its used

Only at Mississippi State will people ***** about a coach who has taken us to the NCAA Tournament 7 of the last 9 years.

it's not like this is Croom we are talking about, doing the best he can at poor lil MSU. Let's use a balance of reality and the want to win. Stansbury is pretty good in that category.

If you return 5 starters from a team that won the SEC Tourney and under-performed the rest of the year, you should be a hell of a lot better the next year.
How many teams from last year that were in the NCAA tourney returned all 5 starters from the year before?
This is not rocket science, you would think a coach could get his players to improve over the off-season, or at least I would.

I am not going to enter into another *** cock fight with C34. This thread was about where we are now and what we can still accomplish. This year's preseason predictions were way off but what is done is done. Funny how no one gave a **** last season about our preseason predictions when we were predicted to be an NIT team at best.
I could think of a hell of a lot worse things than going 22-8 and getting an 8-9 seed.

but Dee Bost has become a freaking head case for whatever reason. He can't do anything right, right now. When he penetrates, his passes get stolen or his shots get blocked. When he pulls up for 3, he is lucky to hit the rim. The quarterback of our team has contracted jevonitis (to steal from AlCo) and it's keeping us from playing like we all thought we would. When your point guard is a head case, you're not going to be very good.

the highest seed in the NCAA tournament last yearfrom the SEC was 8 seed LSU. SEC was **** last year, even though it isn't much better this year, it is better. What did we do last year in the regular season to make so many people think we would be "badass"? What happened once we got into the NCAA tournament last year? Exactly, we got our *** handed to us.

...with a big bag of nothing.

There's a pretty severe indictment of your head coach when your team gets everybody back and gets worse.
