THIBODAUX, La. - The Nicholls State University athletics department issued a statement today concerning Sunday's baseball game at Starkville, Miss against Mississippi State, using NCAA Rules to clarify the situation.

"I wish to correct a misunderstanding regarding the cancelled baseball game between Nicholls State and Mississippi State. I believe MSU baseball coach John Cohen and Southeastern Conference representative Chuck Dunlap misspoke in referring to our game as a forfeit," said Nicholls State Athletic Director Rob Bernardi.

A check of the NCAA Baseball Rule Book indicates that the game be ruled a no contest. This was confirmed with representatives from the NCAA.

Section 4-2b, states that the umpire in charge (UIC) will consult with game administration to determine suspension, resumption or termination once a game has begun. Only the UIC can suspend play once the game has begun since the officiating crew was not able to arrive due to the weather conditions, no one was available to start the game. Given the poor field conditions and lack of NCAA officials at the site, the game is ruled a no contest.

"It was certainly a reasonable decision to cancel the game, given the circumstances. Games scheduled at the University of Mississippi, Auburn University and the University of Alabama were cancelled due to weather related conditions. Again, those games were cancelled, not forfeited," said Bernardi.

"I fully expect that Mississippi State will adjust its record accordingly," added Bernardi.

Mr. Bernardi,

Your baseball coach is chickenshit. By condoning his chickenshit actions, you have demonstrated that you also are chickenshit, and you're running a chickenshit athletic department and teaching young men and women to be chickenshit.

As an aside, I would like to offer my congratulations to Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge for no longer being #1 on my list of most-hated Louisiana schools. They may be a bunch of belligerent ********, but that's better than being chickenshit. Which again, you are. It's a damn shame that what happened to Tulane did not instead hit your school.

Bite me.

Love,

The only reason the NCAA sanctioned umpires weren't in Starkville was because there were told there was no reason for them to drive over from Birmingham since the Nicholls St. team had already left. This is per the crew chief of the umpire crew for the game.

I say that we should keep is as a forfeit in our books, whether the NCAA recognizes it or not.

There's nothing that they or the NCAA could do. There are descrepancies in a lot of teams record books, and heck some people even recognize NC's that aren't even legit.

The SEC seemed to have our back on this, even though the NSU AD seemed to try and throw both their guy and our coach under the bus today.

I really just wanted to ask him a question about why he thought the decision to not play was a joint decision between their coach and Cohen. Well that and maybe throw a jab in about Saints training camp.

Can we send the coach a package of these

With a note saying, "Coach your team left these in the locker room when you ran out of town." Good luck on "playing" the rest of your season.

Now that would be the Ole Miss thing to do. I say reschedule the game if they got the guts and kick the **** out of them.

Nice job and clearly not an overreaction. Yes Nicholls certainly deserves a direct hit from a Cat. 5 storm for its crime against humanity. The entire community of Thibodaux and surrounding parishes served by the university should also suffer. Your well-stated post reveals someone who is neither chickenshit nor a belligerent ******* nor someone easily rattled by the insignificant actions of a third-rate baseball team (FYI, I'm referring to NSU).

I once thought this board was a giant leap above the childish behavior that prevailed on genespage.

Or was this email a parody of someone who is easily offended by trivial things? I can't tell if you're being honest or just joking.

I can't wait to express my outrage in a terse email to Coach Durham, the NSU President, the alumni president, the mayor of Thibodaux, all NSU graduates, Governor Bobby Jindal, the Pope (there are quite a few Catholics at Nicholls)...

a Category 5 storm to hit Thibodeaux because Nicholls State left Starkville like some gutless vaginas. Who wouldn't want that? I mean, it's pretty obvious.

When someone looks at our records and sees that there was a forfeit win, it's going to get people to ask questions. When people hear about a team running out of town because they were scared to play Cohen, well that's how urban legends are formed.

Not to mention it would spite those pussies.

I would love to reschedule the game with them because I would heckle the hell out them.

It ain't going to happen though. We don't know that they will show up.

....and fill that sumbitch up with water.

For the record, Tulane did not get hit by a Cat. 5. It got a glancing blow from a Cat. 3, and you know what, THEY SHOWED UP to play MSU the next weekend in Shreveport.

Must check the urban dictionary.

Katrina's glancing blow helped cause tens of millions in damages (perhaps even a few hundred million). Also, I'm not sure about the structural integrity of Tiger Stadium, but it seems highly unlikely that a hurricane would fill it up with water. I'm guessing that it would leak, but I'm not an engineer.

Nevertheless, I've had an epiphany. I've been swayed. Screw Nicholls baseball. Bunch of pussies. I can't stand those cowardly, chickenshit bitches and their gaping vaginas. That pretty much sums up the depth of this discussion.

Oh well. This has been fun and I've managed to be unproductive and inefficient for nearly an entire day (while still earning a paycheck--what recession?). As a State fan stuck in the middle of LSU country, I get a lot of ****. (Actually, it's been mostly pity lately, which is worse.) So I really didn't expect such a row on this site when I first posted an opposing view of the baseball situation. Not mine, mind you, just something I heard which does seem plausible.

But, it's been a blast taking a few of you on. It almost makes me want to just start **** for the sheer fun of it-it's not like I need cyber friends. I don't mean any ill will, and certainly none to decent State fans who likewise greet the opening of each football season with a combination of irrational optimism and resigned desperation. But, bite me if you can't take a joke or a different opinion.

BTW, some comments were well taken. But a few of you appear to be dimwitted kids feverishly typing naughty words in your parent's basements. Get in timeout now!

Gotta run. A spanking new Weber Genesis needs assembling (don't trust the minimum wagers at Home Depot).

Their media guide shows their record in 1982 as 5-6 (they were 5-5 going into that game) and in their series history with Cal it shows the score of the 1982 game as a 25-20 Cal win.
