What do the numbers say about the level of competition for Gonzaga and Baylor to get to the title game? It's a really mixed bag.
Baylor had tougher competition, Gonzaga won bigger.
Baylor had a tougher row to hoe, if you go by seed numbers: average of 7 to average of 9.2 for Gonzaga.
Which helped explain that Gonzaga won by the largest average margin, 21.8 to 15 points, with a heaping helping hand from the 43-point whipping of out-of-its-league Norfolk.
Gonzaga obviously got the biggest scare, in overtime against UCLA in the Final Four to win by 3 with a 30-footer at the horn, displacing West Virginia as the Zags’ toughest competition (Mountaineers lost by 5 in regulation; everyone else lost to Gonzaga by 10 to 45 points until UCLA almost gave the Zags a heart attack).
Among Power 5 opponents, Baylor beat a Big 10 team (Wisconsin) and an SEC team (Arkansas).
Gonzaga beat a Big 12 team and 2 Pac-12 teams. Slight edge to the Zags there.
It should be a classic battle. But it will have a LONG way to go to excel the Gonzaga-UCLA Final Four overtime drama settled by Suggs’ 3-pointer from Mars at the horn! ESPN article called it a 30-foot shot. The 3-point line is “only” 20.75 feet so Suggs was about 10 feet behind the 3-point line when he winged it and the prayer was answered.
