by relationship, I mean State's staff doesn't use Gene/Steve as part of their recruiting process.
Ole Miss uses their guys. They have since way back in the early 90's's when Chuck had the newspaper style Ole Miss Spirit. He had recruiting stuff all in there. He called recruits all the time.
Dawg's Bite, State's fan newspaper, had ,other than signings, no recruiting news.
I was questioning this **** back in the 80's and 90's about "reporters" calling recruits.
It's nothing new.
Yea, and they all do it now, whether the existing staff is pulling the strings or not.
If your staff chooses not to try to use them as a resource, then they run the risk of letting them get in the way even if it's not on purpose. I would think it would be better to have them in your pocket with some modicum of control over what they do rather than keeping them out risking the possibility that they end up stepping on your toes with what they do.
I'd be fine if they cut off all the recruiting information, because I don't like the feel of it. It just doesn't seem right the way it's done, and it's done that way across the board, not just at Ole Miss. If we were somehow innovators in the field, good for us, but I wish they'd cut it off.
I think I remember some uproar about Yancy crossing some NCAA line with something he was doing a few months back, can't remember what. Anyway, that's why, as a coach, I think you'd want to have your finger on these guys rather than just letting them run around conducting their business as they please. I'm going to bet most of them don't study the NCAA rule book, and it's dangerous to let them run around conducting their business without some sort of control over what they do.
Take the Lee Chambers/Chaz Ramsey thing as another example. I swear I bet Gene ran those two off by stalking them the way he did. If I'm the head coach, I'm going to want to have someone keeping an eye on that so that I can tell that "journalist" to back off or give someone some space if needed.
