Taking the subway to lower Manhattan from JFK would be both cost-effective as well as save you a lot of time (depending on what time of the day you land in JFK). Take the airtrain from the airport (I think it is like $5) to Howard beach/JFK Airport subway stop (or to the Sutphin Blvd/JFK Airport subway stop in Jamaica). Then take the blue line all the way to lower manhattan. The trip should take you about 45 mins, if my memory serves me right.

For more info: http://www.mta.info/

Have fun in NYC.

however, I think it best not to show up for a job interview with a bill for first class airfare and a towncar...

it would be a George Constanza way to go out though..

I would check on a cab. I know they had a law that limited a cab fare from the city to either of the airports at either $20 or $25 a few yrs ago. I'm guessing that works both ways.

I always take the subway... I would rather take the NYC subway at 3AM that walk around donwtown Jackson at any time of the day.... ok maybe not 3 AM, that's pushing it. But taking it during the day is perfectly safe. If you have a lot of luggage you might be better off taking a cab though. Not so much for safety as it is for a hassle carrying all of your stuff.

I've taken it from Penn Station (when I took the Amtrak from Boston) to a stop on the 7 line and back to lower Manhattan with a hanging bag and my laptop computer. No problems at all.
