What's up fellas. I read the board often but rarely (if ever) post. I did want to seek out the pack's infinite wisdom on a certain topic. My son's first birthday is coming up soon. Rather than shower him with meaningless toys and other crap, I thought about buying either a good bottle of wine from the year he was born or a good bottle of liquor (preferably Kentucky bourbon). Put it away until his 21st birthday and then crack it open to celebrate. Anyone have any suggestions on brands and how certain wines/liquors have to be stored in order to be good in 20 years? Thanks.

Wild Turkey. If you wanna spice it up, Wild turkey with Honey is an excellent choice. Certainly worth the investment.**

Its my understanding that once its bottled, the whiskey doesnt get any better. If you want aged you'll.have to buy a bottle in 20 years. Otherwise pick whatever you like and put it in the back of a cabinet for 20 years

Lifetime MS hunting license is the way to go. He'll never have to pay for hunting or fresh and saltwater fishing.

If you can find a bottle of Jack single barrel with his birth date that would be awesome. But tough, if not then go with my avatar and talk to the liquor stores and see if they can track down some pappy for you.

You're right Breazy. The aging process which is the flavor and body development stops the moment the barrel is de-kegged and bottled. The years of storage in American oak barrels in a warmish barrel house add the color, sweetness and vanilla flavor to Bourbon and any American Whiskey. In fact the moment it goes into that glass bottle, it begins the devolution of the spirit and its flavor profile.

Wine? Oh, you can buy some high-end cabernets that may or may not age out into a beautiful 20+ year old wine. But you will pay a bunch of money up front on a come bet that will probably disappoint.

As a father of two MSU students, I would suggest a down payment on his college education. Whether it's a 529 plan or just a simple mutual fund account. Trust me.

Why not write a letter to your son and tell him of your dreams for him. And promise a fishing or hunting trip on his 21st birthday? On that trip, you can break out a vintage wine or aged whiskey and welcome him into adulthood.

His college fund has just been started. I do plan on doing the lifetime license as soon as I see he has an interest in fishing & outdoors. Thanks for the input. Spotdawg, I like the idea of the letter and trip. Good stuff.

I wish I would have done it for my nephew. I'm talking about a special made one with a date engraved or something. Don't know who could do it but it seems like a noble idea. I wonder if the folks that do the award bells for the alumni association and honorable alumni during football halftimes could whip something up. I've been thinking for a while now that those would make a great 1st birthday or groomsmen gift.

Junior Bulldog Club Membership and some cheap toys that he can unwrap for pictures.

When he turns 21, or whatever age you want to have a bourbon with him... buy a good bottle and grill a steak.

Buy him some Hot Wheels and keep them boxed up. I have 45 year old hot wheels and baseball cards stored on the shelf in my closet that my son will get when he turns 21. They will be worth more then some Wiskey.

Time Capsule

We did one for my son's 1st birthday, and he'll get to open when he's 16. Everybody in the family put something in there. There's complete sets of baseball cards, signed baseball cards, heirlooms, etc. Most importantly, there's special notes and pictures in there from family members that may not be around when he hits the age of 16.

We did this, plus got him toys and such (obviously) that he could open at his b-day. But the time capsule is a really cool idea, and once he reaches the age of about 8, he's going to really be wondering what all went in there.
