We're roughly one month out.

Does anyone know of any obstacle coarses in MS that are simuliar to the dash to practice on?

To prior dashers, what's the best way to prepare?

(Currently doing Insanity/P90X Hybrid)

I have read that the obstacles are not what gets you, its the running plus the obstacles (obviously).
From what I have read the best training would be to be in good enough shape to run about 5 miles.
The obstacles themselves don't require superhuman strength to complete I don't think.

I will be running in the 1:30 heat, pretty excited about it.

Are you planning to actually compete, or just doing it for fun? I'm going through with a group of friends who are slower than me in 5ks / 10ks but I don't plan on running off & leaving them. Figure it'll be a lot more fun just taking my time & enjoying each obstacle with folks I know.

If you're doing the same as me, I would figure just generally being in shape will get you through it. I run about 25 miles/week and lift weights about 3 days/week -- I don't plan on doing any special training.

Now if you really want to get competitive, I'd expect you need to plan on how to best conquer each obstacle. I have no idea of anywhere you can train for that type stuff, but WD does have a strenght & cardio training schedule on their website. Best advice would be to start up front because from what I've heard, it gets pretty logjammed at the obstacles. So if your behind people be prepared to spend a little time walking ormaybeevenstanding in line.

It is what it is. Something to do while pretty much ****-faced is what I'm thinking. I'm imagining 5-6 balding, fat, out of shape asshats tanked up on schlitz and pretzels (CARBS, MFers!11!11!) going out there and having a blast laughing at each other's silly asses trying to hoist, crawl, roll, hike, grunt and fart their way through, over, under and eventually around all kinds of ridiculous ****. The suggestion that this should be taken seriously is simply beyond my comprehension.

Phase 1: Wake up on time to get there.

Phase 2: Get there

Phase 3: Have fun and finish

Phase 4: Drink a beer, eat a turkey leg

Phase 5: Go to Starkville

This is a camaderie event more than a competition. I guess you can make it competative, but it's really just running/walking and playing in the mud.

Here's what worked well for me.

Sunday night: long, slow run

Tuesday or Wednesday: Long distance (1/4 mile) sprints

Friday or Sat: Run 2-3 miles, stopping each 1/4 mile to take 2-4 breaths and do some bodyweight exercises. Pullups would be great, but hard to find on-the-go. Pushups, situps, pike pushups, high jumps, spiderman crawls. etc. Do some bodyweight exercise that lasts 30-45 seconds.

If you can't go all-in, at least do the running with BW exercises every 1/4-1/2 mile. That's the best simulation.

Oh and have some upper body strength. There are no pullups or rope climbs. But there is scaling steep walls with a rope to assist yourself. I know fit women who had to skip those parts because they had no upper body strength at all. Don't needs to be real strong, just not a total upper body weakling.

If you just run 1/4 mile then stop and wait a while before climbing over/under/through the obstacle, I figure it won't be quite as tough as it sounds.

my *** back in shape. If I had buddies in it like you, I'd be taking your approach. Since all my friends are heart attacks waiting to happpen (thus not competing) I decided to actually try and have a good run time. I guess the beauty of the event is you can choose 17'off for the entire event, or just beer and turkey leg portion.

Can't wait to see the rabbi's yamaka get muddy also.

Sure, they'll be some people who are badasses doing this, but for the most part, Schmuley has it.

I've watched several videos of runs and it appears there are a few logjams. mostly at the scaling wall due to the limited amount of ropes and the fact it is probably the most challenging for out of shape people like myself who are in abundance at these events from what I can tell.

This pretty much sums up my plans minus the balding part (graying is more accurate for our group). Although we've already lost two people because they decided to try and get in shape and blew out some part of their old *** bodies.

Here are my tips:

(1) Maybe run a littleto get your lungs/legs accustomed. You will end up walking some, and that's ok. Try to get behind a hottie so the scenery is nice.

(2) Bring sunglasses so you're not caught obviously ogling hot, muddy, wet girls in running shorts and sports bras (a waterproof camera might prove handy if you can be subtle and pretend to be taking a pic of your friend when you're actually taking pics which you will hopefully post to SPS soon thereafter).

(3) Have fun.

There were no log jams in the one I ran. They released waves of 500 people every 30 minutes. Most obstacles were in the 2nd half of the race. By that time, the 500 people had spread out quite a bit.
