I've decided it's time for a new work bench. Would like to hear from those about what's to like out there now. Wife is having back issues so I think it's time to break down and get a real good bed.
Love to hear about Sleepnumber, Temperpedic ect. and pro's and con's.
Thanks

Back issues here too.

It was hard for me to choose between Sleep Number and Temperpedic. I ended up listening to the advice of my very good massage therapist. She told me that her clients preferred Sleep Number over Temperpedic by a wide margin.

I chose a Sleep Number model that had that a big layer of that gel foam stuff on top. Kind of like the best of both worlds. It was big time comfortable. BUT...I got real hot laying on it. I'd wake up and night burning up. That gel foam stuff doesn't breathe. Sleep Number swapped me out for a different model with a more traditional top, free of charge and free delivery no questions asked.

I'm really glad I didn't go with the company that only makes gel mattresses.

I'm really happy with the mattress I ended up with and I am glad I didn't pick a company that only makes gel foam mattresses. I might have been happy with Temperpedic, but if I wasn't they wouldn't have had an alternative.

I also favor the adjustibility of Sleep Number. With everybody else's mattress, you get what you get and that's it. Other mattresses will also wear over time. The core of a Sleep Number mattress is never going to wear. You might replace the top pad over time (but I doubt it). I think this is the last mattress I'll buy.

Pro Tip: the "platform" that Sleep Number has, which they sell in place of box springs which aren't needed anymore...is just an expensive plastic box. You could save a lot of money by not buying their platform and just build something from lumber. But if you did I think they wouldn't honor any warranty.

Flab, thanks! I've heard nothing but good things about it and will visit a store. I did see where they have some with cooling options for what you mention. How long have you had yours? Don't know if this is something new that they are offering.

I am a mattress nerd (I work for the largest mattress retail chain in the world). TempurPedic generally rates #1 in mattress brands and now offer TempurChoice models that have the adjustable advantages of Sleep Number and offer the top memory foam qualities of regular Tempurs. Btw, thanks for giving me a reason to start posting.

I have a fake Tempurpedic, love it. Ole lady has a real one, like it too

I personally do not like the sleep number, but I love the memory foam. Of course it will all be individual. There are two caveats with memory foam, A) it's hot, like Flab mentioned, and B) Sexin takes more work. Really. I even read something on CNN about it, not having the springs, etc. That said, it's not a huge deal, but I've noticed it.

I have a gel pillow that helps with the heat, and I think they make some mattress toppers that help as well, but I haven't tried them. That said, I like to sleep with it frigid, so you may not have this issue.

And they make beds for memory foam mattresses, they're called platform beds. No need for box springs. I'd say 75% of my back problems have improved since moving to memory foam.

Sleep number all day every day. The memory foam is hot and will collapse ovr time. Even sleep number is selling beds with a memory foam top now just because it's the latest and greatest but I prefer the standard pillow top. I just ordered a Dream Number which is a less expensive knock off of a sleep number for our motorhome. So far it's as good as the sleep number and I like the controls better. It has a programmable control , if you lay down and it feels hard or soft, just press one button and it returns to your number.

Be careful with places that will swap out mattresses like that. Mattresses should be an item that you can't "return free of charge" for multiple reasons. Those reasons being, well, any kind of bodily fluid you can imagine including urine, feces, *****, blood, vaginal fluid, amniotic fluid, bile, etc. I will even leave out playing the bed bugs and lice cards.

Memory foam beds dont all sleep hot anymore. That's a leftover rumor from years ago that TempurPedic and others (Sealy, Serta, etc) have heard feedback on and made adjustments. Tempur even now has a Breeze line of beds that have a cooling cover on it for people that tend to sleep hot. Also with memory foam such as Tempur if it starts to sink more than 3/4 of an inch that is considered to be a warranty issue. As long as its normal wear and tear, on proper support (frame, matching box spring, platform, etc) the warranty is honored for 25 years. The Tempurpedic mattresses themselves are made to last 42 years.

I don't know how Temperpedic's mattress warranty works.

But most ordinary mattresses have warranties that are pro-rated. They warranty is rated for a lot longer than the life of the mattress. So they'll essentially give you a (planned) discount on a new mattress.

I also think if there is a knock-off Sleep Number it would be worth looking at. There is no magic to an air mattress with a pillow top on it.

OP, I've had my Sleep Number a couple years and still love it.

I would rank mattresses as:

1. Sleep Number
2. Temperpedic
3. Simmons Beautyrest - this is a spring mattress with independent springs which combine for very good back support. But it is a spring mattress, and springs wear out. And they wear out even faster these days since they quit making mattresses that can be flipped.

Post a pic of your wife's boobs and we can see if that might be a contributing factor. I'm sure that will result in more informed suggestions.

Don't know what kind of shape your mattress is in, but I would do a few things to it before I forked out the money for a new mattress. If you feel it's too soft, put a piece of 3/4"-1" ply wood between matress and box springs. I just removed our mattress topper a few months ago, and I have been sleeping better ever since. Also, when you do get a new mattress, or adjust your current mattress, you need to give it at least 2 weeks before determining if you like it. That's the minimum amt of time, it takes your body to adjust to the new bed, or at least I've been told. I tried laying on a temperpedic at one of their stores and my back immediately started hurting. Of course, like I said before, it takes 2 weeks to adjust to a new bed, so it may be the perfect bed for me, but who knows. I've always wanted to try a sleep #, or the original air mattress company, Comfortaire, but I have heard they have mildew problems for some reason.
