Obligatory "Bash the Jumbo Screen" thread here. We go up 7-0, not much time

left in 1st half (and we all know our performance record when opponents get the ball just before half, we've now given up points 6 or 7 times in last ditch drives before halftime). Anyway, we score, the fans start the Maroon-White cheer, the bells are ringing relentlessly and what do we do on the big screen? Loud music, NO, shots of the student section going nuts, NO, show the team doing the Dog Pound Rock, NO. We put up a fu(king Blue Cross Blue Shield insurance commercial, AGAIN, a FU(KING insurance commercial!!! Did they not say they would NOT do that **** at important points in the game?? I'm thinking that was a pretty important point in the game you bunch of sell out for a buck lying bastards.

Now, I will give some credit to show I'm not a total ***. Did anyone notice the "commercial free time out brought to you by Mercedes Benz"? During a break I looked up and on the screen and there was a Benz logo/message on the screen and I think well here we go "Oh Lo ord wont ya by me a Mer say deez Be inz" blah blah blah. But to my surprise up pops a screen that says something like "This commercial free time out brought to you by Mercedes Benz" and then it disappeared. BRAVO Mr. MSU/Learfield jumbo screen showing commercial guy, have a Bud Light on me!

There was a noticeable groan from the crowd when that happened.

And I think there was a local car commercial on first, then insurance, then Columbus Orthopedic doing the not so current Harlem Shake craze.

I am of the belief that the person running that thing has zero understanding of the game of football. Zero.

Just getting rid of the Mercedes commercial made it OK for me. It did not distract me from the game, nor did I want to shove sharp pencils in my ears.

7 home games @ 52,000 roughly per game gives you a possible 360,000 (again roughly) views. I wonder how many downloads they have for that stupid app? Why would you want an app for that, "gee, I wonder what time my ortho dr closes today?Oh wait, ive got an app for that!!

Yeah I heard someone on here gave a suggestion that commercials should only be before game, half time and after game. And that's how it should be. I wish I was in control of the board. It's just like a dj in a club. If you want the crowd rowdy, you play rowdy music and get the crowd fired up. You want things to calm down you play slow soft music(basically like the commercials). And they calm down. There's a science to it.

Didn't Stricklin tweet after last game he's heard the complaints and would do his best to change things? Would you guys say overall it was better or just more of the same? I saw tweets immediately after the Maroon-White chant was started. I face palmed.

I have to say it was the worse night ever and there seemed to be even more commercials. There were so many times again that there would be one after another after another after another and they did it over crowd noise. But I will say that I did notice a few times late in the game that it seemed a few commercials were stopped when the crowd started maroon-white cheer and others. Why would you not know that in a tight game and we are driving that it is not a good time for commercials and another recognition of somebody that did something?

Yes, I noticed the "commercial free time out", but during that time, for two or three minutes, all they did was show shots of the field. I think that some rowdy music would have been appropriate along with the field shot, but not just total silence. But still, it was better than the commercials ad infinitum.

Yes, at the very least it was as bad as it's ever been, and I'd tend to agree that it was probably the worst all year. I wish the school would find some other way to raise money.

And besides ... should us fans who pay a pretty high price for tickets (mine work out to about $400 per seat per game, including the required donation to the BDC) have to be subjected to commercials at all? I don't think so.

Stricklin put out a tweet today saying that the plan for next year was to only have commercials during pre-game and halftime. Hope that holds true. I'm sure they'll still have the god awful chicken dance, though. And trying to feed some donor's low self esteem with on-field recognition every series swap. How about we keep the game experience to crap that actually helps keep the crowd in, you know, the game? Instead of killing the crowd participation at the stupidest times with something dumb on that gigantic commercial box.

How many of those 360,000 do you think buy soybean seeds? That advertisement, more than any other, seems like a total waste of the company's advertising budget.

How much do they make from commercials during a game, anyway?

It it seems to me that they could raise ticket prices by $5.00 per game. If you multiply $5.00 by 50,000 tickets, that's $250,000.00 right there. I really have no idea but I'd be surprised they're making that much just from commercials for each game. I know you've got to consider student tickets, etc., but still...

I know I'd surely be willing to pony up 5 extra bucks per game to kill all commercials and have a lot better crowd involvement in the game.

I think the Jumbotron would be much better used to have game stats, replays and other things like that.

Mainly, I don't come to a football game to be entertained by the Jumbotron. I come to watch the football game. The Jumbotron has taken over the game. It is so loud and so big that it dominates everything. I have come to the opinion now that I wish we had never gotten it. It's way, way, way too loud and, with the way it is being used now, it absolutely KILLS fan involvement in the game. Since new cowbell rules came about, we've had problems with people ringing responsibly. I think a large part of this is because most people are just trying to be heard over the Jumbotron. The truth is if everybody yells at the same time it's even louder than the cowbells. If we could cut out the Jumbotron sound except for announcing the game it would be better in my opinion. With the way it is being used now, I hate the Jumbotron.

Is that the cheesy used car salesman guy with the solid red tie?

I thought last night was about as bad as its been. Even into the 4th quarter - it was like they were trying to squeeze every last commercial in for the year.

I don't know how yall feel but I'm so sick and damn tired of listening to the team come out to bad to the bone. We've come out to that garbage for as long as I can remember and it SUCKS!!! Please for the love of god play something else, that's a real mood killer IMO. I've contacted the athletic department about it but I guess not enough are complaining about it.

I hope there is much he can do about it right now...

Stricklin acknowledging the issue was enough for me at the moment. He is aware that ads have detracted from the atmosphere. This is something that should be corrected before we kick off next year. I don't think there was much he could do about with a game or two remaining on the schedule.

I'd also bet there was an agreement when the jumbotron ad was bought/sold stating how often the ad would appear. I'd assume that agreement occurred before the season started. And from a gameday implementation perspective, I'd also bet that both on/off the ads are structured and rehearsed in an attempt to be cohesive. Therefore, its difficult to change the gameday format right now.

Last time I checked MSU was an ag school. Plus it's Pioneer, they have shitloads of money. Drop in the bucket for them to advertise.

For the first time ever, I wish we just turned it off.

The Chicken Dance, the stupid *** kiss cam, the degraded sound quality and spirit sucking operator have overwhelmed it's usefulness.

From what I have been told we will buy the board back this offseason. We do not have any control of the board right now. We are allowed some input but that's it. Byrne signed this deal in 2008 for 10 years. He used it to help pay for the video board. So as of right now Learfield runs the board.

As much as fans have complained, I don't see why a business would want to continue to advertise on the Jumbotron. It seems that the Mercedes dealer has been paying attention to the complaints. Of course, announcing that the commercial free moment was brought to you by Mercedes is still a commercial.

Maybe a polite call to some of the advertisers would help. "Hello Columbus Ortho. As an MSU fan, I really appreciate your support of MSU by advertising at the ballgames. However, I feel that you advertisement really distracts from the game atmosphere. Is there some other way that you could show your support for the University?"

I really got mad when the gray Daniels car commercial came on after we scored. Our players were doing the dawg pound rock when it cut and went to the commercial. It's gotten so bad my wife is even starting to complain about waaaaay to many commercials.

A friend of mine from auburn came to the game with us and he even made a comment that we had too many commercials and on the field contests such as the sonic thing, honorary captains, etc.

No they didn't.

Dude, the freaking came out to it for the damn Egg Bowl for crying out loud. Hell, they came out to it every game in the Croom era.

If you're going to claim they run out to that, then you may as well claim they're running out to the Joplin Mercedes Benz song.
