Surprised, but not surprised.
While labeled a public school Shadow Mountain is really no different than other basketball factories like Monteverde, Oak Hill and Findley Prep.
Not only do they attract the top players in Arizona, but players from all over the country are flocking there to be coached by Mike Bibby. (Edited, I had it as Henry, his father, a former player for John Wooden at UCLA, when first posted).
They added three players from out of state this season, all of them high-level Division I players.
Their only loss last season was to University High School of Fort Lauderdale, Fla. in an end-of-season tournament of champions. A game they did not have their Arizona State-bound point guard Eddie House, who put up 31 points on West tonight.
The Matadors have a loss earlier this season, to Pinnacle High School, the defending 6A champions in Arizona. They also own a 60-47 win over Chicago Simeon earlier this season.
Hopefully, the Maroons can bounce back strong against Springfield Catholic. Catholic lost 75-42 to McEachern (Ga)., who some have ranked as the best team in the country.

Belleville West isn't deep enough to handle EJ and Brazil being in foul trouble for most of the game. Shadow Mountain was very impressive. I loved the way they penetrated the lane and kicked it out. They were lights out from beyond the arc.

Belleville West should be able to handle Springfield Catholic tonight and will get another test against Rainier Beach (Washington) in the Consolation Championship. It would have been fun to see them on CBS sports tonight though.

You are correct. They have had some close wins that required one or both on the court to pull it out.

West up at half 34-24 over Catholic.

Catholic is a local MO team, added for fodder I assume. Predicted.

Local writer, who had covered three games before West last night, his blog stated after a 14-13 first quarter, deficit by West, “Could this be the first competitive game of the night?”

Certainly showing the National Haves compared to the Have Nots.

Game is tied at 52 with 4:44 to go. E.J. with four fouls and just five points. ... Are they playing by NBA rules. Box score has Liddell with five fouls (seven points) but still in the game. It looks like they just subbed out for him offense for defense leading 59-57 with :46 left.

Just snoozed through DePaul Prep and New Trier. Two teams ranked pretty high, but I can't do games in the 30's. Even came down to the last second.

Now watching ViatorS and Loyola.

According to the Post Dispatch, Alton is still missing 3 players to suspension. I imagine that when those 3 players return, Alton will be even tougher to beat.
Actually, I think three will remain gone.

Alton's season had barely begun when it was involved in a brawl with Riverview Gardens in the Alton Tip-Off Classic. After an investigation into the fight, the Redbirds lost five players to suspension, including Josh Rivers and senior Charles Miller.

Rivers and Miller are back, although the three other players are not. But Alton is making do with what it has for the time being. (Reporter interpretation maybe.)

"We're still missing a couple of kids we had at the beginning of the year," Smith said. "They're kids who had significant minutes for us. But we're going to ride it out. This is our team.

To me, it sounds like this who they are riding with from here on out.

Coach added: They've been through a lot. They've had to grow up and fight through adversity, whether it was their fault or not."

I came across a different article a week or so ago that mentioned that some of the Alton players had already returned with the rest returning towards the end of the season. Not sure what's what.

I'm not familiar with any downstate team and the players talked about - all I can say is that I am truly enjoying the St Laurence and York seasons -sure, winning helps but the level of play and the athleticism is the best I have seen in a long time - the Vikings are loaded with youth and I expect them to face a huge challenge in the sectional - same for York, but a senior-laden team that might fare better due its maturity - both teams with a lot of quality wins to speak of - check these teams out if you get a chance

Morgan Park is taking it to The Beloved. They look tired and/or disinterested while MP looks like they're proving a point.

Raiders showing a little bit of life, but too sloppy still. Unforced turnovers killing them.
