Offense to use "silent count" Saturday

Hmmmm....this should be interesting...the only thing is that it's an 11AM start in Madison so the usually very subdued daytime crowd there, during early starts, will be even more so as it's (edit: Halloween) and the student section will be half-empty well into the 2nd quarter (Wiscy's 14,000 seat student section is notorious for arriving very late...).

Anyway, thoughts? Do you think this O, with Laviano back there, are ready for a "silent count" game?

The offense (and the team, in general) hasn't had many penalties over the last two games. And, that's great. But, moving to a silent count now? I think the over-under on false start/illegal shift/illegal motion/other unforced offensive penalties is 6. I'll take the over. I hope they prove me wrong.

Crowd noise per article (attached here). Now no doubt, The Camp can get very loud, but typically at night, with a full student section, and against bigger rivals. However, not sure if this is a game where it's going to be "Saturday Night, drinking all day, OSU/Michigan/Iowa/Nebraska-crazy" type of atmosphere, to be honest.

Not sure this is a game where a silent count is going to be necessary. No offense to Wisconsin, I just suspect with an 11am start time and us as the opponent, it's not going to be particularly loud in there (at least the first half).

Think you guys are trying way too hard to find fault with everything RU does. You're coming close to jumping the shark level.

The real football guys here can confirm but it seems logical all teams would practice silent counts when they're visiting large, very loud stadiums. They pipe in crowd noise in practice too. It's called preparation.

I agree with this. If they think it's going to be a loud hostile environment where it's hard to hear I don't see it as something unusual. Whether it's executed well and they can handle doing so is another question but taking the measure in and of itself doesn't seem outlandish to me.

Maybe Wisconsin should take a page from the RU marketing playbook; hint at a spectacular surprise to get people into their seats early, deliver considerably less, and shame anyone who is critical.

Even if the student section arrives in the middle of the 2nd qtr. that's still 2 1/2 quarters where crowd noise could be an issue. I remember what Barry Alverez said when overtime was introduced. Asked whether he would choose offense or defense first, his response was: "I'll make them drive past the student section. By overtime they'll be so lit that they'd intimidate anyone."

So, you've pushed your chips to the middle of the table concluding already that this is a mistake. We'll see what happens. I concede, however, you didn't put the over /under on false starts etc. at 6.

wisky is notorious for their defense yelling out when to "shift" the d-line to get the offense to jump. they are probably trying to counter this and save themselves 25 yards through the course of the game.

Badger fan here - this is not homecoming (that was two weeks ago with Purdue). I'm not sure anyone thinks homecoming is any different from any other game anyway. Regardless, this board has accurately portrayed the UW crowd as likely rather lackluster noise-wise. Silent count is just a good thing to have in your arsenal, regardless of why.

Yup.

I'm still waiting for a concrete reason why the team should not practice this other than "I don't think it's going to be necessary". If they don't need it, they won't use it. If they do, at least they've had some practice.

Once again this is just more trying really hard to find fault with whatever Flood does rather than thinking about it in real football terms. You're critical when he doesn't do something different then critical when he does. I hate defending him at this point but Christ, you guys are looney.

Sanu and Eric Legrand led the RU chant, which was cool but not the world changing surprise they hinted at. Hell, if they had just announced that without all the hype, more people would have come earlier.

I'd imagine the reason we didn't do a silent count at TTFP was because the offense wasn't ready for it - 3 new OLine, new QB, new starting FB and TE, etc.

I wonder how much the silent count against Wisconsin is a trial run for the following week against Michigan.

Don't know if it matters. Don't know if it'll even be needed.

Would you consider what OSU does a version of a silent count? They snap on the hand slap. Barrett just varies it by faking the slap a few times.

I've got a pic, midway through the 2nd quarter, against arch-rival Iowa, and is maybe 20% more full than this one. Bottom line: it's tough for students to get up, ready, and into a stadium, at before noon, so these 11AM CST starts are KILLERS for B1G schools!
