The staff has brought in a tremendous number of recruits this year. So how do we fill in the rest of this class? The most recent Riley quote has us taking about 6 more recruits. Earlier reports quoted 22-23 recruits. 18 senior eligibility + Derrion Grim vacated is 19, so 21 factors in 2 more leaving with eligibility on the table. As can be seen below, we currently have zero DB commits and I would be hard-pressed to believe the staff intentionally wants a dead year for DB's. We are still offering more RB's, and certainly one of our already offered ATH's may be targetted for RB/DB. The breakdown of the current committed recruits is as follows:

In a perfect world, where do we want our 6 to fill (or more if that's your belief). My guess: 2 WR, 2 DB, 1 RB (ATH), and 1 LB. Will/is the staff "encouraging" more departures from the current roster to allow room for more? Will the staff "encourage" current commits to flip to somewhere else if we land some of these top targets? The B1G allows oversigning 3 with cause and documentation, because "I wanted to" doesn't appear to be acceptable. It's definitely an interesting recruiting cycle, and February is approaching. So, what's everbody thinking?

They posted a tweet from Lenoir on the halftime twitter feed on the Big screen at the South Dakota basketball game. I can't remember what it said word for word, but it was something like "There is nothing like a degree from the University of Nebraska".

I'm thinking 3 WR's. They'll take Calvin and Lewis and we seem to lead for Gavin. They also seem to be in front of at least 4 DB's (Johnson, Blades, Graham, and maybe Lenoir) with Cotton and Curl floating around (also Darnay).

Supposing we win the lottery, we may have to do some significant shuffling to get a lot of these talented guys on board, whether its asking them to play different positions (Johnson-RB or Blades-Safety) or finding some attrition.

I believe the last couple crystal balls have Slade coming to us.

Daniels is basically N and would fill the expected class for DL. Shelvin would be a surprise flip and a "you make room for". We won't be without a RB, it'll be Johnson at worst. I believe we'd take all three WRs. Slade I think we lead for, but we are still interested in Drew Ward as a backup. IMO, the only real question is figuring out the defensive backfield and who is playing where depending on how many of those DB's want N (Ballard, Lenoir, Johnson, Graham, Blades, Cotton, Curl, etc etc.)

There was a quote in a Arizona football publication right after the D. Williams hire that the NU staff felt confident that it could flip Carr with Williams in tow.It went further to say that we might put Tilford on the back burner a little (which was a positive for UA). Whether that's blowing smoke or not, it was quite the eye popping statement.

Nebraska has 20 scholarship seniors that will be leaving and that counts Grimm's scholly that was given to a walk on senior(Nabity?). There are 4 players from the junior class that could be "processed" but I'm not sure that is something they would do or not since there are only 14 scholarship juniors and would leave us with only 10 graduating seniors.

I really meant to say 3-4. We're not probably going to be looking at a full 13 in his range. We're probably trying to squeeze 9-10 into 7 when the dust settles. Filiaga I think is a low probability but I really would like to have him because its a position of need (this make him important even though I know he's not a Lewis or Graham).

I could see them doing it the easy way and "processing" those that redshirted and have already spent 4 years in the program by saying 'we gave you 4 years to get a degree. You are on track to graduate this spring, so thank you for your contribution to our team.'

BUT you are right. If you pile on the recruits in this class after processing 4 players that would be seniors, next year's recruiting class would start at 10 (time to be VERY picky!!).

Looking at the 2018 seniors, most of those players have been playing, so I wouldn't consider hardly any of them the processing type. you wouldn't be able to "process" out more than a couple at the most (Newell and King?)(unless a career ending injury occurred).

It's hard to have a class with 20 recruits every year when you redshirt 80% of each class.

I think Tuco's distribution is probably the most "right". He's missing a RB, but one of the DB's (Johnson) can be the RB, and we'd still have three great DB's (which was our target number believe).

At a certain point, we (actually the coaching staff) may have some hard decisions to make. The staff has talked about roster managment, and that's really what this discussion is about in my book.

Im reading that Holmes is out. I think someone just posted his dad just said its between UCLA, USC, tOSU, and Michigan. I hope he goes to UCLA, personally, as it seems like a good fit for the kid.

Having said all of that, I am fairly confident we are at least 50% likely to land the following:

-Greg Johnson (4* Athlete, could literally play anything we wanted except line)

-Damion Daniels (3*/4*, DT, big ol' hoss, we take him and we have 5 DL commits, which is incredible)

-Joseph Lewis (5*, WR, taking us because of immediate playing time, 3 year plan to the NFL, and Greg Johnson is his high school team mate)

-Jamire Calvin (3*/4*, WR, we've been high for him for a while, I see him pulling the trigger for us. I also think this is the last WR we take, as he would make 4 total and easily the most talented lineup of any Nebraska has ever had.)

-Demmodoire Lenoir (4*, Athlete/DB, I think we get him simply because we almost got him in the first place, and he just de-committed from Oregon).

-Rahyme Johnson (4*, LB, I think we get him because he really wanted to play with Lenoir and we've been on his list for a while anyway.)

-Isaac Slade-Matautia (4*, LB, I think we land either him or R. Johnson, possibly both.)

I think we make room for between 1 and 3 extra players in addition to the above, depending on if Foster Sarrell, Tyler Shelvin, or a position of great need becomes available. I think we take less than 25 total, but only just; I wouldn't be shocked if we took even up to 24 with a little attrition.

Also, if we landed most or all of the above, we would likely be a top 10 class. That says a LOT compared to barely cracking the top 25, which was pretty normal for us for years. Also also, if the above comes true, watch for us to be a young, daaaaangerous team in 2018 when our schedule is murder.

I don't think the staff is going to hesitate much. The reason they are pursuing some 13 kids is because if we do win the lottery, its already been decided to make room for them through attrition (guys like Sarrell and Shelvin, Filiaga, and 4DBs). If a few of these kids go the other way (as is probably the case for at least a few), then he doesn't have to worry about it.

Nice list and breakdown. I agree with all of the above. The Donté Williams hire is already looking to be a good chess move by Riley. Dude is really in tune with talent on the west coast and in the southwest. I think it's going to bode well come February.

I have to wonder if they think they can survive with 3 for 2017 season and get a couple RB in 2018. Or maybe they have an ace in the hole that is a big secret.

We had the big argument before. Davis IMO is about the worst recruiter on staff (but there are plenty of pretty dang good recruiters so I'm not sure he's absolutely terrible without having met the man). He's at the bottom of a pretty decent pile.

Our strategy this year has been exceedingly weird. We almost exclusive pursued targets who were long shots, and only lately have we offered basically Oregon's targets as their program was in flux. (Although according to a Arizona football writer after we hired Williams, apparently the staff feels they have a good chance of flipping Carr and will leave Tilford alone for the time being, so maybe the coaches are less pessimistic about their "long shot" strategy than we are).

Im reading that Holmes is out. I think someone just posted his dad just said its between UCLA, USC, tOSU, and Michigan. I hope he goes to UCLA, personally, as it seems like a good fit for the kid.

Having said all of that, I am fairly confident we are at least 50% likely to land the following:

-Greg Johnson (4* Athlete, could literally play anything we wanted except line)

-Damion Daniels (3*/4*, DT, big ol' hoss, we take him and we have 5 DL commits, which is incredible)

-Joseph Lewis (5*, WR, taking us because of immediate playing time, 3 year plan to the NFL, and Greg Johnson is his high school team mate)

-Jamire Calvin (3*/4*, WR, we've been high for him for a while, I see him pulling the trigger for us. I also think this is the last WR we take, as he would make 4 total and easily the most talented lineup of any Nebraska has ever had.)

-Demmodoire Lenoir (4*, Athlete/DB, I think we get him simply because we almost got him in the first place, and he just de-committed from Oregon).

-Rahyme Johnson (4*, LB, I think we get him because he really wanted to play with Lenoir and we've been on his list for a while anyway.)

-Isaac Slade-Matautia (4*, LB, I think we land either him or R. Johnson, possibly both.)

I think we make room for between 1 and 3 extra players in addition to the above, depending on if Foster Sarrell, Tyler Shelvin, or a position of great need becomes available. I think we take less than 25 total, but only just; I wouldn't be shocked if we took even up to 24 with a little attrition.

Also, if we landed most or all of the above, we would likely be a top 10 class. That says a LOT compared to barely cracking the top 25, which was pretty normal for us for years. Also also, if the above comes true, watch for us to be a young, daaaaangerous team in 2018 when our schedule is murder.

I have been told NU moved on from Rayhme. Might circle back but ISM and TN commit from Georgia are higher priorities as of now.

I have also heard, this, but also more generally "the Salesian kids" although I think that was aimed more at Pickett and Rayhme than Lenoir.

Clearly, Williams is all over Lenoir.
