I sincerely appreciate what Rick has done, just like I did Jackie. At some point, the ride is over. Hell, Peyton Manning was a lock to retire a Colt, right? No, the ride was over.

We can hope he retires, but until I see it, I don't believe it.

I am a supporter of Stans, but have to admit that he has fallen off big-time-----most of it being management of the personalities and team chemistry---it has been AWFUL the last 4 years (and the 2 years before Gordon/Rhodes last year--they seemed to pull it together and show some leadership).<div>

this is how. We agree on something to do with basketball coach, that may be a first. I usually agree with you on football believe it or not.I hope you are a football coach. I won't complain whatever we do with Stans. I can still see the good he has done here and what we were before he arrived on campus. On the other hand there are the last few years and esp this year. While I don't think this is exactly a "talented" team, it should have done well enough to make the NCAA. I thinkStans' recruiting emphasis has shifted away from what really works at MSU. We are never going to draw the "talent" across the boardto compete with "talented" teams. When you try it hereyou wind up with too many head cases, kind of like UM football under Nutt. What we need, and it seems to be the approach Mullen is taking, is a core of players that may not be the most talented but will bust their *** to try and make up for that. Those guys always complement and make betterthe ones with talent we do get.That combinationCAN compete at the highest level here. It just seems to me that is what MSU needs to try to get in whatever sport. In basketball that means guys like Darryl Wilson, Timmy Bowers, Russell Walters, Brandon Vincent, etc. We just haven't had many of thatkind of guy lately. Jarvis may have been the closest. Stans used to always have those people around.

To me, you can't look at records. Our team did not look like they wanted to be there. In fact if you did not know which team was which that wanted to win this game, you would have said Georgia was the team that was on the bubble and State was the 14-16 team. Because this reason, we need to at least force Stans to retire. He is a great guy and he has done a lot for the university BUT his passion is gone. He looks like he is complacent. This will flame out worse then the baseball team with Polk if we don't act now. That's my two cents but he is done as a coach at MSU as far as getting the job done.

I'm concerned it's not the type of guys he is recruiting, but it's the culture that surrounds the program---something has changed----a lot. A coach can make a player tough that wasn't necessarily that way coming in. How many charges have we taken this year???? <div>

but Strick took the first necessary step last year by not extending his contract. At that time, I don't know what expectations were set but whatever they were, I have a hard time believing that Stans met them this year even if we do somehow still sneak into the dance. What I'm getting at is that I don't strongly disagree with anything you said, but how many times can Strick just not extend his contract? Technically, I guess the answer is "four" but if you don't have enough confidence in your head coach to extend his deal in back to back years, that tells me that you no longer have the right man for the job.

Of course, we could still end up getting into the tourney, miraculously winning several games, and then this all shot to hell. But I highly doubt it...

Unless their is something Im missing, all she has ever done is cheer her heart out a games. What have you EVER seen from Stricklin that would make you think that? It seems there's a small group of posters who keep wanting to try to make Stricklin into Templeton IIwhen there's been nothing at all to indicatethat's even close to the truth. He looksjust like Byrne II to me.

If he's been getting $250k of his salary from the state, and say will hit 25 years when he's 55, I think getting to 25 years is worth an extra $125k per year from the time he's 55 to 60, then an extra $15k a year after that. He shouldn't need that to retire, but that's not exactly chump change. Not to mention the fact that if he gets another 3 years in as coach, he'll make another $3M. As much as I want Stansbury to retire before the relationship with the school turns ugly, I think if I had the chance to tack on approximately $4M of compensation over my last three years, I'd fight to do it, even if I had lost my passion for coaching.

Looking at it from his perspective, even if he is set for retirement, he could earn an extra $200k per kid...

Didn't really make the point, but if we want to avoid a Polk-like situation, getting him to 25 years could be a big enough gesture that it makes the medicine go down smoother.

I personally want Stansbury to feel welcome at State and to keep a good relationship with the school. People understandably are frustrated as hell at the job he's done the past several years, but overall, he's been a big-time positive for the school and I hope we are able to find a way to maintain a good relationship with him that doesn't require us giving him time to run the program into the ground.

I'd rather have another Polk type situation than go 3 more years with a coach we should have gotten rid of. And I really don't think Stans is going to take this anything like Polk did. Stans may be pissed and he'll sure be frustrated, but you're not going to see threats of sabotaging the program like we did with Polk. He'll handle it the right way.

Somebody mentioned giving him an administrative job in the Athletics Department (may have been said in another thread). Give him a BS job and let him get 3 more years credit. Then he starts drawing retirement immediately rather than at age 60 or whatever it is. Assuming we're basically going to be paying him for 3 years to buy him out anyway, it's a relatively cheap way (at least from the standpoint of the Athletic Department, probably not so much from the perspective of whatever pension plan he is in) to get him an extra $125k or whatever it would be from the time he hits 25 til the time he would be eligible for the normal retirement age. This is assuming he's in the state retirement system, not sure if he is.

And I wouldn't expect Stansbury to go Polk on us regardless, but if there are any big time donors that still support him, it'd help if he ends up reasonably happy, or if not happy, at least thinks he was treated fairly. It also may make the job more desirable for the next coach if the next coach is aware that Stansbury left happy.

It's the right thing to do, and as you mention, it really won't cost much. more than a buyout would.
