"I think Mississippi State is the team to watch this year in the SEC. I think they can compete to win an SEC West division crown. There is alot of attrition at the QB position in that division - McCarron, Mettenburger, Manziel - all now gone. This is one of those perfect cyclical years for Dan Mullen and Mississippi State with the schedule and with the players coming back that line up just right. They return 18 starters. I love quarterback Dak Prescott. He has tremendous arm talent. He's the best running back on that offense. And, he has that 'It' factor from a leadership standpoint. He's got his top 5 receiving targets coming back from a year ago including Jameon Lewis, that will get involved in the running game. Defensively, they're very big, they're very long. They look like an NFL defense. They're very experienced as well; 22 of the 25 players that played the majority of defensive snaps come back this year. Benardrick McKinney, a 6'5 250lb, middle linebacker is an absolute monster. I think he's a first round pick next year. And Chris Jones, a name up front at defensive tackle, not alot of people outside the SEC know that name yet, is a future star.

The schedule sets up pretty nice - Southern Miss is the toughest non-conference opponent. They do have to go to Alabama, and they do have to go LSU. But, they play LSU on the road, early, and I expect them to win that game. LSU loses almost all of its offensive players from a year ago. (MSU) has crossover games with the SECEast against Vandy and against Kentucky. That Egg Bowl late in the year could be a huge determing game for who goes to Atlanta out of the SECWest.

Keep your eye on Dan Mullen and Mississippi State."

I'm predicting a full and complete meltdown after the LSU game. This board along with others will be dominated by fire Dan posts.

He's been saying that for 9 months now. Like a broken record.**

Ha. Hey at least he's consistent in his prediction. He could have easily dropped us after he talked so much about us in the Egg Bowl and bowl game.

I have always heard to never listen or trust a guy who wears a skinny tie (i.e. Jesse 'Skinny Tie' Palmer.

Now if he starts brandishing a fat tie look out.

Considering the point differential in the LSU game has grown exponentially every year since Mullen has arrived if we lose to LSU by 60 points this year the posts will be warranted.

That's

the worst thing about these outsiders pumping us up, it only inflates our perception of how the season should go among the idiots.

It's a game we need to win. It's a potential program building game. Do you think the media love/hype for this team is crazy now? Let us leave Baton Rouge 4-0, and see what happens.

We have a chance to grab the national spotlight that night. We need to take advantage of it.

I'm not saying it's not an important game. I'm saying we have fans that can't see the forest for the trees. Losing to LSU or Bama are not reasons to take to social media and demand the firing of Dan.

7-5, 8-4.

But my point isn't that you have to be an idiot to think we'll do better. My point is that when (if) we slip up and don't meet these expectations of 10/11 wins, then you'll have the mass influx of morons posting crap like FireMullenz and Mullenz cant recruit over and over and over and over and over, based upon what they are told by Barrett Sallee & Hugh Kellenberger.

My Expectation by years:
Floor: 2013
Median: 2010
Ceiling: 1999

I have no reserve in saying that I expect a season 2010 or better. There are not many years where the schedule and talent align like 2014. You can't stop injuries, but the depth is there to overcome attrition.

Mullen has been handed he keys to the caddy on the field and recruiting in 2014. The question whether he can bring it home in one piece. He's been good at meeting expectations so far.

This part of the thread is way off base. You're creating your own demons. Basing anything on a loss @LSU is not even in the conversation of fanbase.

But if State heads to the bye week 2-2, then somebody might have a gripe.

It is a big game. But it's also the 2nd toughest game on our schedule. We could lose that game and still go 10-2. So I disagree that it's a game we need to win. A win would be huge. But a loss doesn't mean we won't still have a good, or even great, season.

**** that. If this team wants to compete for the West, it better get through the 3 game stretch of @ LSU, TAM, and Auburn 2-1.

LSU is ranked #15-#20 is most polls, and they play Wisconsin game #1. If they lose that game, we'll likely be ranked higher going into that game.

How does that relate to my comment about the expectations of the fan base?

Winning ^TAMU and ^Auburn is not even in the same conversation as winning @LSU (@night).

And what polls are those? Looks to me like they're pretty much ranked #10-#15
If they lose to Wisconsin...
And we won't be ranked at least until after the LSU game.

It got pretty quiet those last four games. My point was more specifically about judging the rest of the season off the LSU game. Even though they lost, the Auburn game was a good indication of where the team was. The OSU loss... well...

For some reason I've had a weird feeling about that game all offseason.

I don't think we will lose, but that's your most likely candidate for a LA Tech/Troy/Bowling Green kind of game where we struggle.

It's our first road game and we will likely be 2-0 via two blowouts and might be looking ahead to LSU.

Athlon and Phil Steele have them #17 and #19. Check out ESPN's composite ranking which has #14 LSU and #17 MSU. There's not much difference between the two teams IMO. I don't think the average fan can name two players on LSU's offense.

I think our combination of talent and experience makes this a very winnable game for us. We have to start knocking some of these down. Like I said 2-1 in that 3 game stretch if we want to be in the discussions for the West in November. I don't think the LSU game is much more difficult to win than the other two (A&M and Auburn).

That poll seems to be quite the outlier.

We are a better team than LSU right now. They have an O-line, some RB's, and a bunch of freak athletes that haven't played a lot.

We have the #1 or #2 QB in the league and a deep and experienced roster. Our run defense should be outstanding, and our secondary should be opportunistic against wet-behind-the-ears QBs early in the season. We should expect to win at LSU.

Family not fans

I'm so glad Daks family had more faith in him and his teammates growing up. Maybe that's why he was a winner all those years. This team believes they can win a championship who are any of you to say they can't. How about encouraging them as fans and supporting as family. Tell a kid his whole life he's worthless and won't ever be **** he won't be. Feed confidence, love and support he will a minimum be successful. JS
