Our D gave us the chance to win against both this year. Our offense simply couldn't capitalize against either.

from all I've heard about OM boosters taking care of his family and AU doing what they do .. don't see how we land him. I think it's b/t OM and AU.

The first part of the job is getting them to commit. The 2nd (and hardest) is getting that fax machine to spit out a piece of paper with their name on it in February. If we hold on to these guys and pick up some of the other big names out there (Ward, Brown) then we are going to have a stellar defensive signing class. Defense is won up front. We can have the best DB's in the nation but Deion Sanders couldn't cover a offensive lineman with a torn ACL forever. You have to get pressure on the QB. Do that and an average secondary can look all pro. With how our class is shaping up that could well be the most enviable position we find ourselves in in 2-3 years...next year if Cox stays.

22,

I would see him at AU before OM this year. I read a quote from him back during the summer where he ultimate goal was to play in the NFL to provide for his family. Last year we put some quality defensive players in the NFL and could well do that again this year if Cox and Banks goes pro. OM's entire athletic department is in shambles with football leading the parade. He knows that winning teams get more looks from scouts and right now OM would be hard pressed to beat Delta State. Not saying we get him but I think we would hold the edge of OM. Right now we have a recent history of putting guys in the league and may be getting ready to put an underclassman d-linemen in the league as a first rounder. If he wants to get on a team and prove he is NFL early entrant good so he can get paid and take care of his family then I think we get a hard look.

but State doesn't have an in with Ward, based on what I've heard. AU's doing everything they can in their typical manner, and OM has ties with him that go back years. Money talks and in this case it all depends onifthe cash and benefits influence him, or which program is in the best position to put him in the league.

But you're right I hope he does perceive it as you and most of us do .. OM's program is a joke right now and AU's D has been sub-par and no longer has a D-Coordinator.

idea if his signature will require money, but if it does, we better damn pay up. Not getting involved in this game is what hurt us in recruiting last year.

He would be a complete idiot to go to oxford, and not for reasons aligning with the rivalry....just pure common sense. He is probably pretty excited about those om white girls. based on his choices, even if he did not come to state he should go to LSU or Auburn or timbucktoo u. That is just purely honest. If he went to LSU or Bama, I bet hedisappears in the depth chart like so many other miss kids.

Nobody in this defensive conference is bringing in better DL players than us. I hope Ward realizes that he can come here and make this the most dominant DL in the country. They could be something special like Nebraska's black shirts from years ago. Our DL could be not only be the best, but nationally known and nationally feared.

He could come to MSU and be surrounded by other DLinemen that are equally talented. He could come here and other teams wouldn't be able to double team him because Autry or Boyd/Evans or whomever would kill them on the other side. Conversely, should he attend Olemiss he will be double and triple teamed by both opposing defenses and swallowing white chicks. I guess that kind of decision may be difficult for 18 yr old. I hope he chooses wisely.

Again, from what I understand the offer to the SWAC is on the table. U sure u don't wanna go somewhere, where you'll be competitive? Cuz it ain't gonna happen in the SEC sonny.

^----Absolutely horrible post. That is sheepesque. We've been to a NYD bowl and a decent bowl game this year. We're not world beaters. We're talking about recruiting and the attractiveness of the schools to Ward. Not some sheep over here acting like MSU is a dominant SEC team and has been and there's no place for Ole Miss. Remember where we were and they were just a couple of years ago.

Surely the recruits know through the grape vine which schools have a reputation for not paying. With the early commitments we have, you'd have to assume either (i) those kids don't have their hands out, or (ii) that they have reasons to think their hand will be greased. Otherwise why would they even commit to state in the first place.

I'm sure (i) is true for several of the early commitments, but I'd be pretty skeptical that in the midst of all the other SEC schools ponying up, a recruiting class like this could be pulled together with nobody getting their hands dirty. Now if we have several big time decommits between now and signing day, then I'll entertain the idea that state is continuing its non-paying ways and that commits really just assumed that they would get paid in the beginning. Until then I'm assuming we're involved in the game at least in certain instances.

that we have no "in" unless you are saying we don't have a big time booster that has buddied up with him. Heck, last I heard Ward's mother was taking classes at MSU. That would seem to be a pretty good "in" if she likes it there. I know his brother is a walk on at OM and so one of the biggest "ins" that OM may have is to promise him AND his brother a scholarship if he comes.

It has to do with our O-line mainly, and the lack of a playmaker at the receiver position. <div>
</div><div>
</div><div>Losing Tobias that early really put a hurtin' on us and we struggled to upright a sinking ship. Our O-line performed pretty well but we couldn't hang with the SEC talent week in and week out with RS-Fr. Day playing center, as well as a converted defensive tackle at the right tackle position - who really rounded off and contributed quite well towards the end of the season, I might add.</div><div>
</div><div>
</div><div>Having that said, our defense is our strong suit, it kept us in all the games we were in and allowed us to win; and it seems only to be getting stronger - assuming Cox and Banks stay put. We've got linebackers that shined with a chip on their shoulders, senior corners just about 2-deep and the D-line speaks for itself. Offense, you are handed the torch.</div><div>

Their defense is going to get a ton of work next year. Everyone on Dwill be getting 40 minutes plus of play timeper game. No way in hell their Offense can maintain a pace of 80-100 plays a game with the roster they have. I'm going to call it now, they will set records for the number of 3 and outs.
After watching Wommack here in Atlanta at Ga Tech I might have to revise my statement about number of snaps by their Offense. When Wommack was DC at Tech they gave up an average of 30 points. And that is after factoring in how much time that Ga Tech's Offense holds the ball. They were terrible and when Al Groh took over their defense turned around immediately. He won't be in Oxford for year 2, but if he is that whole bunch won't be there for year 3.

a dumbass question like a little jr. high girl who loves sparkely vampres. "OMG, if we sign Ward will we be competitive Vs. Bama & LSU"? Umm, did u watch either game? Defense wasn't our problem! We held both to lower outputs in each game. Our offense is & was our problem. Ward's good, but he actually takes plays off too much.

Now as far as Channing's concerned he's a great player but he has the same problem CJ had last year. He takes plays off too much. Conditioning will be an issue. But has good upside. Very strong & is crazy fast for his size. We played them in a 7on7 this year @ Starkville High. Aberdeen had him @ OLB covering WP, SHS, Noxubee & our slot wr. He actually was beat Vs.us on a stop & go and caught up to our WR for a pass breakup. "No way is he that fast!" is what our OC said afyer the play. Guys a BEAST!

Who said we were? But (and again u apparently didn't ACTUALLY watch the games based on your question @ the begining) we were in EVERY game since Mullen's been here EXCEPT for a handful. Could've very well had been 6-6 his 1st yr (LSU game 2nd & GL Dixon got in & wasn't called). This year we weren't in the Arky game & seemed flat in the latter part of the Georgia game. Not world beaters, but back2back bowl game seasons are nice. No matter how you get them. This years recruiting class is a biproduct of last years season!

McPhee was a great DE. But in his last season here, he didn't ring up the stats because teams could double team him without fear of our other DL guys at the time.<div>
</div><div>First off Ward > McPhee.</div><div>
</div><div>So as it stands, Ward coming here would light up the stat sheet since the OL can't afford to double team him with Quay, Autry, etc out there too.</div>

And people wanted to get rid of Wilson & were bitching that he wasn't "as good as Manny". Games in the SEC are won on the front line. Manny didn't recruit DL, he went after LBs. Remember, these kids ALL sign because of Wilson "beating the ground". Don't sell him short! The guy is 17'n awesome! To me (and I know I'm gonna catch flack) I'd rather lose Dan than him! Yes, I said it!

You're right our D kept us in games all year. I never said we didn't have a good D. We did have a good D. LSU's D won them every single game this year. Alabama's D won them every single game this year. LSU and Bama had success running and passing to a degree on us this year. To try and compare our D to LSU and Bama's is absolutely ridiculous. Mullen can develop the heck outta 3 star players, but Miles and Saban develop the heck outta players who are 4 and 5 stars.<div>
</div><div>With the potential for three 5 star players, and with another 4 star in Nick James.....add that to what we have coming back....That's is the talent to compete with LSU and Bama and possibly win those games. Not keep us in the games Hulk. Like Mullen said, "going good to great," is the next step.</div>

Dan has beaten Ole Miss and that's it in the SEC West.....I'm with the crowd that says, "Who the hell are we supposed to beat!???!!??" I say that bc the SECW is the strongest division/conference in college football history. ARK, LSU, and Bama have been stellar since Dan has been here. Dan prolly should have beaten Auburn two of his three years, but he hasn't. Your a sheep bc you're acting like the SEC is too good for Ole Miss, when in reality, we were right where they were only 2 years ago. There's no reason to brag about being 5th in the SEC West and that's what you're doing.
