They’d kick the tires on him

He’s a name and has experience there and real world AD experience elsewhere

He’s a likely finalist because of all of that but do the Donors like him?

Oklahoma On3 board is mentioning him. Some are saying he hasn't done enough.

Lord I hope so. But I think the Texas Tech AD will be their first choice. If they can get him.

Selmon's buyout is 75% of his remaining salary if he goes to an SEC school. Does Oklahoma want to pay ~ $3 million for him?

He signed a 4 year extension for 1.25 million/year.

Selmon has done well at MSU. I think OU can find someone with more experience, but our fans just hate the MSU AD at any given time.

They’re obviously doing something right to constantly be falling up the ladder to jobs like Florida, Alabama and Auburn.

I don't know much about him, but it seems anyone leaving Texas Tech and their new massive pile of blank checks would be crazy at this point.
Exactly. In the old days, of course you leave Texas Tech for Oklahoma. Now, I'm not so sure. I really think Oklahoma's life in the SEC will be a lot like Nebraska's life in the Big 10. They won't fall as far down as Nebraska has because they have a lot more access to good recruiting grounds, but they'll be middle of the pack long term.

Would be shocked if his inside knowledge on that didn’t drive some of his urgency on a slam dunk baseball hire, which is fine
Wait....are you saying if the OU job was not going to be open, then Selmon would not have put as much effort into making a big baseball hire?

Not saying you're wrong, but that would be really messed up. There's over a million reasons for him to be motivated to do his job, and choice AD spots at bigger schools open up all the time.

Post from their board by a fan...

First noting that nothing about this is substantiated or even educated. Just something I've had in my mind for awhile and not exactly a hot take.

I would bet money that Joe C knew he was retiring in 2025/2026 by at least 2021. At the time, he tells Zac to go get an AD job, which he would get him with one phone call, and the perfect one opens up in Mississippi St where it's in the SEC, does not have the pressure of the big boys, and allows him to get the job title. The timing of Joe's retirement was also to make sure that Zac's tenure (wherever he went) was not long enough that people could point to results (good or bad), but long enough that when he's announced as OU's AD nobody can point to a lack of experience.

I'm also not stating my opinion on whether this was/is the right or wrong move/hire for OU, but all seems very plausible with a controlled and measured guy like Joe C who wants his legacy to continue in hands of his choosing.

And that's a whole lot better than where we are and will be.

We should just make Brian O'Connor the next AD. Hes smart and he has a binder.***
Didn’t you know…that was one of his incentives. Selman knew the OK AD was retiring and he would get the job so he tells BOC that he (BOC) will be the next AD/Baseball HC. 4D chess***

Sort of. He has incentive to make a good hire regardless, especially given where things are with Lebby, but if he’s got a bucket of money to spend on athletics and a dream job opening up, he’s incentivized to use it differently than he might if he were a career Mississippi State guy (eg, a headline hire rather than an unsexy project). And I’m frankly way happier than I thought possible after a baseball hire, so I’m glad he did what he did, but I’m sure it was in the back of his mind.

Are they still going to have that with the new House settlement? I thought that all but wrecked the collectives. Theoretically, Texas Tech would be part of the Revenue Sharing, but the Revenue Sharing for SEC schools is going to be a lot higher than Revenue Sharing for Big 12 schools.

I could he misunderstanding how that works out though.

In theory - it stops it but the toothpaste is out of the tube on this in my opinion. Even if the clearinghouse stops it - there is money under the table too. So it's back to what it was 5 years ago and plus the NCAA has even less teeth than they had before in regards to penalties.

NIL will supplement Rev Share. At least for the schools that can. T

He's doing well, I hope he stays for a while. We do not need more turnover right now.

AD’s are like Baptist Preachers, they don’t hang around long and always leave for a bigger church (or program)

It will all depend on how much the SEC and Big 10 want to police it. I'm not optimistic they do.
