Sorry but I refuse to believe your theory that the thought of working for him has built such a negative reputation that he could not identify a single standing low major DC or high major position coach who would agree to accept a tremendous pay raise to come work for him. I know you hate Schiano and I don’t know what’s going on here, but you realize how unlikely this would be, right? I mean, maybe you or Shelby or whoever dislike Greg enough where if it was you, then you’d turn down a huge chuck of money and career opportunity for your family to avoid working for him but the chance that every single active low major DC and high major position coach out there took this view? It rounds to zero, man. Like I said - don’t know what it is but it’s not that. Someone would for sure take the bag. This isn’t making sense.
I don't hate Schiano. I don't know him. I met him once or twice very briefly. I do know he's not going to take our football program near the heights it was 20 years ago.
Someone will take the bag, but that's what it's going to be. Overpay for someone underqualified for the role or one of the other scenarios I've listed. It doesn't take this long to identify and hire a DC when you've known this role was going to be open. We are going on at least 3 months. Wars get fought and won in shorter amounts of time. There is reason it's taking this long and that reason is obvious.
Listen to this sites podcast posted last night before the national championship game. The 3 site admins went over this hiring process and the priors. They even admit he struck out on multiple targets his last 2 go around for OC-DC. And many of his targets were not interested in working for Greg
Half their royalties for a handful of verses? Nobody else could turn those lines into the music they created. I believe these blues musicians that LedZep greatly admired have been paid what was owed.

Oh I don’t doubt that there are plenty of desirable candidates who don’t want to work for him regardless of the pay. I’m not suggesting otherwise. My point is for enough money, he could find someone (not everyone but someone) whose been a DC at a low level or a position coach at a high major.
If it’s true that the guys he wanted were not interested, ok fine, but it still doesn’t make sense that he wouldn’t go to the next up on the list until someone accepted the bag early on and announce while the portal was open.
Unless he was holding out for someone he thought he would get who is getting cold feet, AGAIN, which would be incredibly stupid after getting burned for that the first time.
No - the reason isn’t obvious because you kind of just talked yourself out of your original premise which was that nobody would work for him. Someone would take a large enough bag. so something else is delaying it. Was he really stupid enough to hold out for someone who is going to have cold feet or was non committal but he thought he could convince? Its looking more and more like the answer is yes, but its just odd. Greg has a lot of shortcomings but stupidity has never been one of them except when he needs to make quick coaching decisions like calling a time out. He plans out like every detail and thinks of everything. How could he take the same risk he took last time again? That seems so out of character for him.

None of the last 3 major hires and the process make sense to me. You don’t fire in any industry unless you know the hire. He for all intents and purposes fired Smith after the Oregon game in October. The fact he didn’t hire someone within a week of the end of season is astonishing to me. This is now the third time starting with Ciarocca that we’ve been down this road. He continues to set the record for time to hire. Average job vacancy in P4 was less than 2 weeks. His last 3 hires have been greater than 2 months close to 3 months. That is crazy.
Look - all signs seem to point to him having had someone in mind who he “thought / still thinks” he could convince to come here after their current playoff run ended. That decision in its own right comes with risk, because even if someone told him they would take the job, they could still end up getting a better offer or decide not to leave their existing role. But if Greg didn’t have an existing person who he was holding out for he would’ve hired someone by now or announced he was going to call plays and started to hire other position coaches to support him. There would be no reason to wait.
Agreed the risk to delay the announcement of the hire is all on Greg. There is no upside (from a negotiation and logistical standpoint) not having someone in place prior to portal. Delaying the announcement of someone allows for that person to play both sides against the middle.
The thing is everyone knows Schiano is a lame duck coach. If you have a stable job are you willing to leave it for a one year job for a bigger pay check? It a huge gamble especially if you are coming from a championship caliber program.
That’s just BS. Look at the track record of where his previous coordinators went after leaving him. It hasn’t ruined anyone’s career. Most went on to be very successful. I’m not buying this. It’s one thing to say he’s not easy to work for and I have no doubt he rubs some the wrong way but what you posted isn’t true. Not at all.

Explain the last two years DC coaching searches? Why is Greg the only HC in the country that waits months after the season to announce his DC ? Every other school announced in a day or two after making a change?
do we really want him as DC though. the defense was worse when he took over last year and against easier competition which was mostly the bottom half of the BIG. I don't even need to go back further than the Kstate bowl game disaster.

The length of this search is a border line fireable offense. Hearing that he is waiting on a coach currently in the playoffs- that is a BS excuse...heck- even Head Coaches have taken new jobs just as their team is going into the playoffs. And you see coaches doing this before their bowls, etc...

I don’t think USC has a DC yet. Kwiatkowski still out there and have even seen talk of Gary Patterson too.

It seems to me (from a thousand feet away), Greg gets his sights on someone who has a built in excuse to string him along. Greg convinces himself that he’ll be able persuade that person to come on board and holds out. Greg turns out to be wrong (I guess arguably in Kirk’s case - it worked out for him).
I’m not saying any of the above is acceptable. If this turns out to be reality again darts should deservingly be thrown Greg’s way. Full stop. But no subscription to premium / inside info is needed to dismiss the theories that A) Greg couldn’t find a single person with low major DC or high major position coach experience willing to take a pay check to come work for him and/or B) that the reason for A is that taking this job is career suicide (is there even a single past coordinator in Greg’s history who that turned out to be true for?)
Folks don’t have to like Greg as the coach - it’s one thing to want a change but suggestions A and B are simply not logical. It isn’t those things.

no don't, it's a group think over there and you and me both but I'm fine it. Too many good posters that offered different perspectives have left. That said, we are where we are due to the man in charge so let's see this play out.
some of my favorite people ever that were diehard fans have pretty much moved on. And many of these people are who I have met and consider friends. It is part of the reason I have not not signed back up...Also- too many on the RT really do not want to have discussions and just want to be heard. I think too many signed up just so they can post in the CE board and that carries over into the football discussions.
Football and basketball are complete messes.
Myself- I am going to start having my days center more around going to Univ of Delaware games and be a bit more passive with Rutgers.
