relationships required to put together a top notch SEC staff. He is a very good offensive coordinator, but what kind of network does he have at this time, with only being out of highschool for about 6 years.

goes to Ole Miss. I think he would be a disaster. I hope they don't make a run at Leech. Not sure Leech would take the job anyway. I could see them having to go with their 4th, 5th or even 6th choice, which will probably be Hudspeth. And knowing our luck, he will probably be far and away the best choice. They will luck their way into making a great hire.

People saying how horrible of a job Mullen is doing because he hasn't beaten a team in the West in the middle of his third year in his first HC job. I'm not a fan of mediocrity by any means. I am, however, a rational fan. Those teams in the West that he hasn't beaten have all not only been ranked but fairly highly ranked and finished the season that way. After what we were left with, did you really expect to be beating the top tier of teams not only in the conference, but the nation? I'd be interested to see our previous coach's records against teams with similar rankings compared to their tenure and years as a HC. Not to mention the changes he has had to deal with as far as coaching staff in the last 3 years. Not saying any of that should excuse anything that has happened but there are things to consider

If you're going to be hiring good assistants, you have to deal with staff turnover, because they'll be getting promoted. That's the difficult part.

That's also why Nutt has so little staff turnover and his coaching tree looks like an Arkansas family tree.

Anyway, I think Mullen has done a good job with staff hires, in particular guys like Hudspeth and Diaz. The trick is if you do that, you have to keep making good staff hires. I think Tuberville went through Muschamp, Chizik, Bobby Petrino, and maybe a few others while at Auburn. It's just part of the deal when you make good hires. Obviously Saban has gone through a lot of good assistants too, constant staff turnover.

Back on the original subject, the rumor I'm hearing is that we already are having discussions to come up with a list of candidates, so it wouldn't surprise me if we had someone making contact with agents to send out feelers. That would be the smart thing to do, so that we're ready to make the move official the week after Thanksgiving, to allow maximum time for the new staff to be put into place prior to signing day. I've heard another rumor that Nutt has already been informed of his status as well. I'd put my level of confidence on the first rumor at about 99%. On the second I put my level of confidence at about 60%. That's why I say it's pretty well certain Nutt isn't coming back.

of why MSU struggles to get any traction in the SEC. We sucked complete balls for 10 years straight, Mullen had us headed in the right direction starting in year one and won us a NYD bowl in year 2. Now we hit a little bump in the road in year 3 and some people are ready to call him a flop. Brilliant. Why don't you go start forward bulldogs?

just wonder if next year is as bad as this year, will y'all continue to make excuses for him? Had a friend tell me he gets at least two more years either way. The thread is about ole miss. if they make the right hire, two years is plenty for them to pass us by. For the record, next year doesn't look so hot to me. Russell is not an Sec west qb either. so ill just sit back and watch. I hope for the sake of my school, that we have the right guy. I think peoples expectations have changed though. if the fanbase would have been told when he got here that by year three we would be 3 and 12 vs the west, not sire that our fans would accept it.

Another egg bowl loss? 4 wins or less? It's obvious that there isn't much love for Nutt anywhere in the OM fanbase, but I'm curious as to what would be the final blow.

On the topic of Malzahn, I'll just say that I think both he and the school could do worse.

I think Mullen will get better at it. He has to learn like all new head coaches who are head coaches for the first time. He's the closer now and his roll in recruiting is different then it was as a coordinator.

To be 100% honest, I wanted Dennis Erickson when we hired O. Though it appears that may not have worked out any better.

as long as 1 of the 5 was the Egg Bowl. I think he's probably right. Less than 5 and I think Nutt's a goner though. As for Bruiser's rumor that they've been discussing the list of candidates they'd like to go after and started putting out feelers to agents, I'd be shocked if that wasn't true.

feel free to explain why exactly he wouldn't be a better coach. This is all pure opinion and conjecture, none of us know how anyone will do for a fact.

I don't know for sure, but I don't think there is much Nutt could do at this point to save his job. If we won out beating LSU, Auburn, and you guys, I guess maybe they'd have to pull back on it, but that's not happening.

I really doubt 5 wins does the trick, with or without an Egg Bowl. From my understanding, it's pretty well decided that we're making a move. I guess things could change, but I don't think 5 wins and an Egg Bowl would be enough. Maybe if we finish 4-1 then he saves his job for another year, especially since we'd have a bowl to prepare for, but I don't see that happening.

make excuses. I just pointed out the fact that the teams that have beaten us are a great deal better than us. Is it disappointing that we lost to AU and UGA? Yes, but to sit here and act like we lost to 4 teams that we should have beaten is crazy. Did you not pay attention to our program the past 10+ years? You can't exactly erase over a decade of sucktitude in two seasons. If you cannot see the improvement from our prior staff, then I can't really talk to you about the subject.

The battle cry at OM was to getsomeone with head coaching experience. Since that time Davis has been fired by NC, Erickson has averaged a whopping6 wins a season since 2006. Houston Nutt is now a liablity.

However:

OM hired Tubberville, a DC, to come in and he did the job well.OM hired Cuttcliff an OCwho had even more success. Your hiring of Orgeron was a nearly a complete disaster but primarily because he'd never had so much asa coordinators position.

I'm thinking with your track record since 1981, the idea of an expensive guy with experience is not the way to go.

Davis might be the perfect hire. But with him comes the baggage and the high price tag (read a contract that is expensive to get out of).

He just smacks of the same mistake that you had with Nutt. If you have to shell out the millions, it needs to be an incentive based contract, instead of thesafety net/retirement packagepolicy for someonewho'son the downside of his career.

but you replied to my reply to behr who mentioned that malzahn would see Dans situation at state and not want to come to ole miss. I personally think that's ********. a winner will win at state or ole miss. the situation is that Dan isn't winning. and for about four of the last ten years I've been telling y'all about a winner. Hud has turned 40 years of suckitude into success in seven games. I don't expect y'all to agree. but I have been proven to be right so far. so I guess time will tell. for the record, lots more people agree now than back then.
