On the AD search

I thought I would address the latest CL blog entry that threw some names out there. When it comes to the Athletic Department, I do not always have the inside scoop, but I do when it involves the President's office.
Scott Stricklin- Has some momentum, but still has a lack of experience that has people concerned
Joe Dean Jr.- My source tells me that he is no longer in the running
Whit Hughes- Has had some big time folks call on his behalf, but I am told that lack of Athletic Department experience is a deal killer.
Lee Fowler- Has never been in the discussion
So out of the names the Veazey threw out there, you would think that Stricklin has the job, but.... (this is a direct quote from my source) "the search committee has delivered 20 very qualified individuals who have all expressed interest in the opening." This tells me that Stricklin has large uphill battle to overcome.

Hasn't Stricklin been at several schools before MSU? Although he doesn't have true Athletic Director experience, his stops at Auburn, Baylor, Tulane and Kentucky should look much better to me than someone whose been the AD at a school w/ a $1m athletic budget. Not saying he is / isn't the best candiate; just trying to get a feel for the "experience" issue.

IfHughes gets the job, not only will I never donate to the Bulldog Club again, but I'll probably sell my English bulldog as well.

I don't think Hughes is qualified for the job, either, but why in the world should that cause you to never donate again and sell your English bulldog? It's not like we did something like change our mascot/colors or step up enforcement of cowbell bans. I'm pretty sure Hughes would do everything in his power to make us as successful as possible (and again, I don't think he's ready, don't try to make this a post supporting him).

IfHughes (or anyone else who has zero years of athletic department experience) were to get it, I would basically lose faith in the person running the university.

Maybe selling my dog went too far, I love that guy.</p>

and may indeed be the leading candidate.

SEC ties trying to get back South?
If the current BCS athletic director is Lee Fowler, MSU is screwed. He supposedly interviewed last week.

Fowler was hated by MTSU people while there.

NC State is forgetting to renew his contract and most of the Pack don't like him either.

I am telling you guys, we will wish LT is back in charge if Fowler is hired. He really is that bad.

Strickin as AD. Whit Hughes as whatever Stricklin was. That way Stricklin could groom Hughes much like Byrne groomed Stricklin. Is that kosher?

Reading that biography would definitely have me excited if we were to hire him. On the other hand you would have to be skiddish that we might get byrned again since he would leave kansas state after less than a year.

that he is a shoe in to be the next AD at Tennessee. A UT alum just e-mailed me and said that he would be awesome, and a lot of eyes from Knoxville are on him at Kansas State.

On one hand, we could be looking for another AD in 2-3 years. On another, this cat is good enough to be a shoe in at Tennessee, so why not let him shine at State for a couple years. Hell, I have no problem being a stepping stone program. Some of our fans act like we are on par with Alabama or Texas and this should be someone's last job.

There's a very talented athletic department staffer on the women's side that is from Mississippi, graduated from MSU, worked at MSU for a year and is now at Oklahoma.

Beinga stepping stoneisn't necessarily all bad. Young rising stars that aspire to end upat a perennial Top 10 Athletic program have one very important attribute that I really like. They will never get there unless they succeed while they are at MSU.

Xavier's basketball coaches over the years arethe best example of a team that has found a way to continue to attract rising stars and send them on to bigger and better things.Sean Miller - Arizona, Thad Motta- Ohio State, and the late Skip Prosser -Wake Forestare the last 3 Xavier coaches. Who is Chris Mack? - the current Xavier 1st year head coach who just wrapped up a Sweet 16 appearance and will likely be running a marquis college hoops program 3-4 years from now.

It's not easy to run a model like this to perfection, but it certainly beats making decisions basedon who you think will stick around for a long time.

If 615 is saying Currie IS the current BCS AD that is in the lead, then good.

If 615 is saying he has heard a current BCS AD is in the lead and hopes it is Currie (meaning it could still be Fowler, who has already interviewed for the MSU job), then it sucks.

I hope his source is accurate on which BCS AD is in the lead.

Edited to add: Another thing that scares me is that Fowler just resigned from NC State effective the end of June. This comes a week after interviewing here.

that we're a little concerned a school like a Tennessee would take away from us in a couple of years than one we're not concerned about. You can't be scared to make a good hire. If a bigger school snaps him up later, you go out and make another (hopefully) good hire. As someone else pointed out, being a stepping stone ain't exactly a bad deal. No bigger school is going to take our AD (or coach) away if he isn't doing a good job at MSU.

and there is probably no chance in hell Fowler is coming here, but how many times have we 17'ed up things at MSU?

I keep telling myself we are past the LT's and dumb moves, but I can't shake the feeling in the back of my mind that we are still M State and we are going to make the stupid hire.

Its hard to have optimism after being a State fan for very long.
