One interesting thing about Schuessler ...

is that, although he got little interest from big time programs, it's curious that Colorado State jumped on him late. The only explanation for CSU's interest would be the fact that they hired Jim McElwain. Apparently JM saw enough of this guy to want him. I take that as a good sign when an offensive mind like McElwain wants a guy we wanted.

what he looked for in a qb and he answered someone who has won, who is cerebral and dedicated to filmwork and he used that hated word "gym rat" kind of a kid. Thats obviously a summary because he said more but thats the part they are playing on a commercial for The Lifestyle Show.

at least 30 more lbs on his frame which is doable. Watching his films he mad a lot of short throws that looked good, he threw with confidence. His long throws were<div>ok but he needs to develop more arm strength it appears. Obviously he has the intangibles that Mullen loves in that he is confident and has a winners mentality which</div><div>you have to have at the QB position.</div>

but I can't tell you how many times I have watched a CSU or MTSU game and wished we had their QB. The guy has good size and he has won a state championship at a big school. If we can develop the guy at all, he should at least be a serviceable backup in the future.

Kid went 15-0 in 5A GHSAA football and dominated the opponent in the Championship game. I'd say that puts him above most of the QB's in MS. No offense to any High School Coaches here.
He needs to put on some weight and that's fine since he'll most likely Redshirt this year. One thing though from his tape is he can sling the ball pretty well. And he seems like a pretty smart kid, that's a good foundation.

I think he's a great pick up for our needs, we weren't going to bring in a top rated field ready QB to be our 3rd option.

and won the state at a 6A school that throws it around, he may have stood out more. Seems odd to type that but he might have been the Big Fish in the small pond. At the very least he would have been offered by the 3 DI school and there would've been some internet drama over his decision.

Let's not fool ourselves. He was plan G. We whiffed on all our qbs and he was left. He looks mildly athletic, skinny, and weak armed (as do most HS qbs). He made the easy throws and struggled with anything else. I'm no Jon Gruden, but he looked like a "system qb", much like the kid out of Amory. I read somewhere that he averaged around 10 throws a game. I'm just gonna go out on a limb and say his high completion percentage was a product of their solid running game. D stacks the box, you throw it.<div>
</div><div>Like DawgNDCity said, there have been numerous times when I've seen MTSU's or Alcorn's qb and thought to myself, why in the hell is Henig out there??? So maybe this guy will be serviceable.

</div><div>With that being said, I'm glad he is a dawg and hope he is the next Joe Montana.</div><div>

coming out of HS. A tall, relatively thin white kid playing QB with an average arm whose HS team didn't really throw it that much and didn't end up with many offers. However I will say Nick is definitely faster and more athletic than Matt ever was. I think Nick can be a serviceable QB for us but I agree that we shouldn't be setting unrealistic expectations for him and there is definitely a reason we held out until the clock struck midnight on Liggins before we were willing to offer Schuessler. That being said though I think THE most important thing was getting another decent QB on the roster, which Nick gives us, in order to start his development and be available in case of an injury emergency. I think most of us all agree that Dak is the QB of the future until proven otherwise.

Really all I hope is that he is a guy who after a couple of years in the system could step in in case of injury and we would not be totally screwed.

We didn't plan on taking a QB until Favre left for PRCC. ONLY THEN, did we start recruiting QB's. By that time, all our primary targets had established relationships with other programs. I think are lucky we got a kid with as much upside as Nick.

Schuessler seems like a solid pickup. Short of having ahighly rated qb that was a die-hard MSU fan, it was unlikely that we were going to get a highly rated qb to come potentially sit the bench behind Dak for 4 years.

Liggins obviously would have been preferable, as it seems his size and speed would have made him at worst Relf 2.0 (assuming no character or injury issues), but Schluessler seems like a good guy to take a flyer on. He hasn't gotten to throw the ball a lot in highschool, so while he's probably behind as a qb, there's also the chance he could improve alot when he gets to campus and really gets some work in. And barring injury, he won't be rushed to play. If in 3 years he turns out to be a solid backup that we can trust to come in when Prescott gets banged up, I would say that's a solid pickup at this point in the game.

Guys, remember, we're 2 years out of the Tyson Lee Experience... At least this guy looks like he can throw it more than 20 yards without a crow-hop and can see over the line of scrimmage. I'd say that's a couple of steps forward.

we have recruited qbs all year... it didn't become a need and a fanbase focal point until after favre left and for most until russell got injuried.
