No doubt about it, can't win if you turn the ball over like we do.

Yes but you are clearly overlooking the fact that we dominated Iowa Smokin
It exposes the problem with trying to talk about yards like they mean anything if you don't find the end zone. "It's not about yards, ma'am, it's about points."

It's a cold bucket of water on all that talk of "Well, the close losses, if this or that happens they're a 10-win team." No...not really. The end of year stats say they are a bad team, and the turnover margin tells you why they haven't been very good for a long time.

If you can do NOTHING ELSE as a team, don't commit dumb penalties (false start, personal foul, PI, illegal formation) and don't chuck a bunch of picks. It will buy you a couple wins a year on that alone. Look at Iowa. Just decent on talent, but they don't give the ball away and they don't beat themselves with penalties. Consequently they beat all the teams they should.

It has been a very long time since we haven't had a QB that turns the ball over a lot either through the air or on the ground. Tommy handles the ball much better than the previous QB so if he can make better decisions with the passing game we can be a pretty good team offensively.

Nebraska has had a negative turnover margin for a few years now.
2015 = -1.1.
2014 = -0.2
2013 = -1.0
2012 = -0.9
2011 = 0.0
2010 = +0.1
2009 = +0.4

Dirk Chatelain's analysis in the OWH indicates that in the last four seasons, the turnover margin was especially bad in the "games that matter."

So while the original premise is absolutely correct (that a negative turnover margin indicates a losing record), it appears Nebraska won 9 games from 2012-2014 in spite of that horrendous statistic.

Putting coaching and schedules aside, there have been constants for NU over the past four years = exciting but erratic quarterback play; a sometimes leaky defense (pass this year or run in years past — you pick); and spotty offensive line play.

The difference between a nine-win season and a five-win season at Nebraska has been the lack of explosive playmakers at key positions, especially at running back and defensive end. Without Burkhead and Abdullah's threats to turn a poorly blocked play into a key first down and/or six points, we struggled to run the ball in key situations that would have secured victory in at least three games this year.

So, yeah, Beav — if Nebraska continues to turn the ball over and doesn't have all-conference playmakers at key positions, we'll more than likely continue to see losing seasons.

Time to recruit AND teach ball security.

Rewatching the game just made me feel Ill. Tommy could have very easily had 6 INTs in this game. I was listening to Nick on 1620 yesterday, and he said that TA has averaged something like 1.4 turnovers/game during his career. Actually a fair amount more than Taylor Martinez did. I believe Taylor was just shy of 1.1/game. Ugh..

I'm going to help you out here. You look petty and small talking out both sides of your mouth. And as far as your sig I'm going to help you out again. Imagine someone's mom falling down the stairs. Would you sit there an laugh about how the looked going down the staris. That's how i know you're not a husker fan. No Husker fan would choose brownie points over their huskers. Now a Iowa fan would do exactly that. Enjoy your brownie points!

Give it a rest. It was a stupid statement, you ran your mouth all week and you were wrong. Take your medicine.

you know you are absolutely right ... I now wish that when Tommy called me up at halftime of the game and asked me whether I wanted to beat Iowa or get "brownie" points I would have said beat Iowa. Instead I was selfish and told him to dial up another pick or 2 to prove red rover wrong.

red rover.

You've got to chill man. You largely talking to perfectly reasonable posters in this thread. Folks that wanted Bo gone, know Riley should get a few years to show what he can do, etc. They are just noting the facts surrounding this season. We threw a lot of picks. That's a fact.

It doesn't matter what you say. You're a hypocrite who will contradict yourself.

So a poster can jump from multiple threads and contradict themselves to suit their need just to bash me. And not only is it cool... but I'm in the wrong for pointing it out???

I'm not sure Beav that saying you can prove we have a "bad team" is very supportable based on ONE stat. What that stat reveals is how ONE guy can affect your team's record with his turnovers. Without those interceptions we likely would have had a MUCH different record.

Well...there are plenty of stats that support them being a bad team, but IMO turnover margin is the most damning one.

If memory serves me, it's U505.
We'd hop the IC or a bus from 79th & Cottage Grove (Grand Crossing neighborhood ), always fantastic times.
Then down to Rainbow Beach for a swim. It was heaven on earth.

OP- Agree with your premise that TO margin is indicative of "how good" the team is. The optimists just view the fix as relatively easy: improved QB play. Whether that's TA or POB doesn't matter. There are pieces there which is why I'm not panicking. A lot of those teams with poor TO margin are overmatched, that doesn't appear to be the problem with our Huskers. Our TOs are of the boneheaded variety. Imminently fixable, lets just hope that it is.

I was going to say, how does are turnovers look outside Tommy? I wouldn't say the Huskers are a bad team, but I'd say Tommy is pour decision maker. I hate pointing the figure but I bet, without looking, half those turnovers came from Tommys arm and not fumbles from RBs, WRs or even Tommy. As for penalties, we have had those issues for several years now and it's about time to fix it.

This is why I'm confused by the people who love to pontificate about how NU just didn't have the personnel to run the ball. So....who the Hell did we beat throwing the ball? The only wins over teams with a pulse were at Minnesota and at home against Michigan State, and in both those games NU ran the ball pretty effectively.

As a team, we threw 21 interceptions this season. That ties us for fourth worst in the nation in INT's thrown.

As a team this season, Iowa threw 3 interceptions. That ties Iowa for second best in the nation. #1 is Navy with only 2 INT's but they've also only thrown 90 total passes compared to Iowa's 309.

So what's the point? Avoiding turnovers wins football games. Generating opponent turnovers wins football games. We are pretty weak in both categories and that's the primary reason we put up a piss poor record this season.

There are 3 things that I like to see over everything else in a football game. Strong run game, winning in the trenches and minimal mistakes. Obviously mistakes will happen but turning the ball over all the time and piling on the penalties will ensure that you remain a bad football team.
