One thing I'm extremely encouraged by...

is that the areas that are coached by our head coach- we look to be coached very well. Unlike the Crooms Error, the offense looks well-coached. We have a plan. We know our limitations and try to stay within those parameters. We are trying to do the things on offense that use the talent we have- thats about all you can ask. In case you havent noticed, we arent overly-talented on offense.
Those of you wanting to put in Russell- why? He IS NOT a runner. He is a pocket-passer. We DO NOT have the WR's to put in a sophisticated passing attack. And neither Lee nor Relf could handle that kind of passing attack as QB's if we did go that direction. So if Russell went down, we would be beyond screwed.

Special Teams- our Head Coach is directly coaching this area. And they look great. We blocked a punt for the first time in 8 years. We had a good return game on kickoffs. Our coverage units were solid.

Bottom line- we have made a good hire as a head coach. Now we have to give him and the staff time to recruit, and he needs to put pressure on the defensive coaches to have a better plan or he needs to get new coaches.

And like Todd said in an earlier thread, I am also more comfortable knowing that Mullen will **** can somebody if they are not getting the job done and not put priorities on misplaced loyalties and friendships.

Nothing personal for Torbush, but every college coach I've talked to say he hasn't been the same since he was a head coach. This guy better make some quick adjustments or it will be a one and done. If the same performances keep showing up, he might not make it past October.

Everyone would have to admit that our offense looks better but not good enough. Special teams have taken a complete overhaul. We went from special teams being the bigest weakness other than our offense of course to I would say the special temas is now our strongest part of the team. I did not give Gus M much credit before the game but we were completely outcoached on defense. I have never seen us look so lost. I believe the way that you stop their running attack is to have run blitzes but they cannot be exposed until the ball is snapped. Their running plays seemed like they took a little time to develop due to pulling guards. Also rushing 3 on third down had having someone wide open on the sideline is unforgiveable.

I would actually make it quite simple. The hardest throws the make are the intermediate throws over the middle of the field, because they are usually in traffic and thus there are more defenders to account for. If I were to go with Tyler Russell, I would do 3 basic things offensively with him in the game. I would run the ball, continue to throw the short passes, but also add some deep routes. Deep routes, while more difficult than short passes, are often in single coverage (at least against us; no one respects our passing game) and thus still relatively low-risk. (Also, for the sake of this, we'll include the fade as a deep route) I think this actually best takes advantage of the talent we have on our team. We have a stable of capable backs (Dixon, Ducre, Stallworth, Elliot), some very elusive guys for the short passing game (Berry, Bumphis, Heavens), and then several really good deep threats (McRae, Wilder, Green).
Adding the downfield passing game into the equation would then in turn open up the run and the short passing game, which Auburn walked up on and shut down in the second half the other night (I think the fact that we royally sucked on offense in the second half has gotten lost in the fact that our defense was terrible). Even if we didn't make tons of plays with it, the simple threat would be very valuable to our offense. Right now, we don't have that threat. Tyson a) hardly ever will make the throw and b) throws way too flat a ball when he does let it go. Relf just ins't accurate enough. Defenses are walking up and daring us to beat them deep.
If you watch his videos, one thing you'll learn about Russell is that he throws one heck of a deep ball. He has a big arm and really excellent touch. Let him throw a fade to O'Neal Wilder or Brandon McRae, and our offense has a whole new element to work with.
From what Coach Mullen said last week, it sounds like the light has come on for Tyler. If that really is the case, I see no reason not to see what he's got. Coach34, since you're such a big Cam Newton fan, you shouldn't be worried abou the potential of "ruining" him anyway. According to you we won't need him anymore after this year.
