Disclaimer: I don't want anyone to think I have any ulterior motives, so I want to put it out front that I was born and raised as an Ole Miss fan. I'm a second-generation alumnus. My Dad went to Ole Miss on the G.I. Bill after he got out of the Army. He was a high-school history teacher and a head baseball coach. Neither he nor I were in a fraternity. Everyone in my family comes from a blue-collar background.
I never heard my Dad say anything bad about MSU. I suspect that since he grew up in Memphis, he just wasn't exposed to the more bitter aspects of the rivalry among people from Mississippi. I never outright asked him how he felt about MSU, because he passed away when I was in the ninth grade, and I just never thought to ask him about his opinion.
I remember him saying that when he was a kid in Memphis, his friends were most often fans of Ole Miss (which was the closest college around besides Memphis, and people just didn't get excited about them), Tennessee, or bandwagon fans of Alabama (if he disliked any school, it was Alabama). I'm sure there were fans of lots of other schools, but that seems to be what he thought as a kid.
Anyways, I absolutely wasn't raised to hate MSU. And I don't. I have family and friends who went there, and I recognize that there are many, many good things about the school. I get along fine with all of them. I'd be lying if I said that I didn't want Ole Miss to win when they go head-to-head. At the same time, I don't have any problem at all when MSU fans are proud of their alma mater's achievements. I know that tearing down MSU wouldn't do anything to build up Ole Miss. Plus, every fanbase has its lunatic fringe. It's pointless to argue with an idiot, regardless of which side of the fence he sits on. I admit that it's tempting sometimes, though.
With all of that said, I'm interested to know how some people feel on the other side of the aisle. Do you prefer to have an absolutely bitter rivalry, or would you like it if people could be more civil about the whole thing?
I don't expect anyone to sing kumbaya. That's not why I'm here. There are no wrong answers. I'm not even going to try to change anyone's mind about how he feels. I won't get into a pissing contest about which school or the people who go there are "better." I want it to be absolutely clear that I don't want to argue. I'm just curious about whether people prefer for it to be bitter or civil.
I apologize for the long post. I just wanted my intentions to be clear, and it took a lot of prefacing to get my point across.
