For anyone going to Orange Beach in the next few weeks, be careful getting in the water.

We were anchored yesterday at Robinson Island, just inside Perdido Pass, and noticed many discarded Red Snapper carcasses floating by. Probably the reason for the sudden shark infestation.

The article says that's the reason for all the sharks. Fishermen are throwing out fish carcasses and attracting sharks. How much dumber can you get.

That's some dirty looking water. Haven't been to the coast in a while. Is that the left over from the oil spill? Just got back from a cruise and the water out there is beautiful. I used to go to Panama City a lot and water was always nice and blue. But it's been 5 years

If the water was that dirty you wouldn't be able to see the sharks or the sand.

I think its more that the bottom of the gulf floor there is dirty or dark versus the actual water being dirty.

No, the water is nasty because it's nasty. The oil spill has nothing to do with it. Thanks liberal media.

Got back from destin last week. The water has been churning pretty hard and the single red flag was out the whole time I was there. Water had a lot of algae and other sediment in it making it look dirty. It's not the norm, the water has just been a little rough.

Exactly. The bad weather has stirred up and brought in a bunch of sea weed as well. Left Saturday myself and stayed at the beach colony. Was in the water most of the day Wednesday Thursday and Friday. Laws knows I didn't see a shark.

Just got back from a week at Orange Beach a few hours ago... The only sharks I saw were the one's that sharked my red snappers while reeling them in. A couple of real nasty ones too... Anyway... I saw the warnings yesterday and stayed in the pool.

Just got to Gulf Shores today. Heard about this on the way down. Guess the kids won't be past knee deep...if at all.

I was floating 50 feet away from a kid who lost his leg to a shark. He was standing in hip-deep water. Ever since then, the water hasn't gone above my ankles.

I wade fish a good bit and see sharks frequently. For the most part they want to be left alone just as much as you but obviously there are some that are just too curious. I know people who've lost wade belts full of fish to them but I've never had it happen, I've also never been in the water with a tiger though. I also know a guy who pokes, yells, hits and provokes any shark that comes between him and his fish.

If you poke them in the face

With your rod tip, they usually lose interest in your stringer pretty quickly..

I do this as well. Always had fun. One year I was up to my shoulders trying to cast to the darker water. I hooked what I believe was a good sized shark. The fish immediately spooled about 1/2 my line then it broke. Scared the Hell out if me. Still wade fish. Just not that far out anymore.

So what are these bulls or blacktips?
My first guess was bulls, buts that's all it is. A guess. I will not 17 around with a bull. Not sure how aggressive black tips are.

ETA: doing some more reading and a boater said he thought they were mako's which are said to be common in the gulf.

funny thing ... they are almost always around shallow beaches everyday but usually go unnoticed ..... probably not bulls or makos but something more like blacktips, lemons, spinners

Well I think the idiots who use to clean fish by the water at the camp ground by Tommy Trading Post on the north lake of the Ross Barnett was more stupid. You had little kids playing all over that place and those fish guts were attracting Alligators. The bad part is Alligators are not constricted to the water. It’s my understanding the game wardens stopped all that.

I guess a good rule of thumb is to check the flags before going in. They have double red flags right now, so no way would I get in until that changes. It's kind of like playing with fire really. You may get in a hundred times and never get bit, but all it takes is that one time to lose an arm or a leg.

Yeah the water in South Walton, Panama City, or Mexico Beach is night and day compared to Orange Beach/Gulf Shores.
The only time I ever go to Orange Beach is when I get a free place to stay... They water is not that much better than the MS gulf coast..

Orange Beach/Gulf Shores is what it is. By vacationing on the Alabama coast, you save on driving time, but you lose water clarity. I've had nothing but fun experiences down there myself, but if you are expecting crystal clear water you will be disappointed. Like I said, it is what it is.

The amount of rain over the past month is the biggest reason for the murky (more than normal) water right now. Gulf Shores is similar water conditions to the eastern barrier islands of Mississippi. All the fresh water coming down the rivers over the past month+ hasn't been good

Makos are typically pelagic open ocean species, but I guess the food trail has brought them into the shallows. Those are closely related to great whites, which are also in the gulf.
