Good question........

you'll probably want to call the number to find out. I did not ask. I was assuming that you could write off the face value of the ticket.

I have contacted the Boys and Girls Club of Miami. They will take tickets as well. I got to write off face value when I did this with the Gator Bowl a few years back.

That certainly makes sense. But here's a question. If I can deduct face value for a ticket, what keeps me from buying 50 tickets at $12 a pop and then donating them to a charity and writing off the $100 per ticket. Not that I'd go through all that trouble for making $15 per ticket profit but just curious.

I have a better idea. Why don't you use your tickets and go to the game so we're not embarrassed by our crowd?

If you donate a ticket that you paid full value for, it's reasonable to argue the face value is the fair market value.

If you paid $12 for it, and turned right around and donated it, it's unreasonable to argue anything other than $12 is the fair market value.

However, I would think it would be extremely unlikely that the IRS would catch you doing the latter.

After overpaying $130 a ticket, not counting the excessive travel expenses, I say 17 being embarrassed by our crowd.

If Dan has the team come out flat, I say 17 him too.

Amen. The whole problem with ticket values being in the toilet is so many people think Miami is on the other side of the country. Biggest bowl game in years and everyone is afraid of the drive. It's a whole 3 hours further than the Gator Bowl and good hotels in the suburbs are well under $200.
We road tripped it to Jacksonville and glad we did...so we're doing it again for a bigger bowl.

You could donate the $160 ticket you bought through the university, deduct it and gain the tax dollars back at your marginal rate (say, $40 if your rate is 25%), and buy a $20 ticket in the same location.

Hotels well under $200 is an exaggeration. Plus that puts you "well outside" of Miami.

I'm guessing you would be able to deduct the price you paid for the tickets, either lower or higher.

Donating indicates that you did not use the ticket ... that you got nothing for it. I know that the Club Level seats at DWS (each seat is $1750, plus the price of season tickets) the proper deduction is 80% of the $1750 because you got something for the remaining 20%, such as food, game programs, and other bennies.

You're right, it's not as bad as perceived, but it's certainly not conveniently located to any school that might ever play in the game, except the University of Miami. I don't think Central Florida or West Florida will ever be in the Orange Bowl. And it's not really all that well located for the casual FB fan that's not really a fan of either school to go to.

Quality Inn in Miami near the airport: $152 and night. Marriott chain hotels (a mid level hotel) 30 minutes from the stadium...several choices for $160-190. If you can access this forum, you too have the ability to book a hotel for a decent price.
