I don't agree with the premise Lanning is suffering from Deion fatigue. I agree with the comments in this tweet and it's something I've mentioned in one of the Deion threads. The article is paywall but you can get the gist from the tweet. I think Lanning was using the Deion spotlight to bring attention to his school and team, nothing more. It's the Nike flash school that already gets some attention but Deion was a vehicle to use and put a stamp on it and say "hey we're the real big dogs" come look at us recruits/transfers etc... Oregon is competing against USC/Washington and soon to be other B10 schools like Michigan/OSU/PSU so the more they can bring attention, glamour and what not to their program the better it can help them compete.
Remember when USC got added, they had the preference that Oregon would not get added? Why? Because they preferred not to compete with the flashy Nike school for Cali recruits. So I see Lanning using the Deion spotlight as a vehicle to show Cali recruits, national recruits and transfers" "hey we're the real show" both in flash and substance.
From the article:
Lanning and
Oregon wanted to embarrass the Buffaloes and send a message to the world. That’s the job of a college football coach. This isn’t the
NFL with a salary cap, equal revenue and a draft. In this sport, you’re always selling, and nobody knows that better than Colorado’s Deion Sanders.
Oregon was selling to the many recruits it brought to this game, to the millions of casual fans who tuned in only for Coach Prime, to the College Football Playoff committee, to Heisman Trophy voters, to the YouTube faithful who watch every behind-the-scenes video about Colorado football.
“I don’t care how much anybody talks about us, but if we find fuel for the fire, we’ll use it,” Lanning said after the win.
The Oregon head man reverted to coachspeak after the game, saying he had to humble himself, but the message had already been sent.
