All I can think of right now is how much Orley loved that dog and scratching her belly. He could throw that in any article he wrote and it always fit. He could make an article about painting a pig pen sound like a project worthy of national news coverage. I emailed him several times about stuff he wrote and always got a gracious reply that left me with a smile.

A good man.

Back when the newspaper was really good.
Fall Sundays after football Saturday. Rick Cleveland and Orley Hood had some quality material. Throw in Bobby Cleveland with outdoor activities. The sports section had some quality material then.

I played golf with he and Rusty several times. Orley was a great guy.

Will be missed.

My favorite Orley Hood line was with regard to political fight in Pearl regarding satellite dishes the in the front yard. Orley's solution was to make the satellite dishes look like pink flamingos.

Man there were some good writers at the CL.

Saw your piece on Bettye Jolly (Epicurious for those who didn't know) the other day as well and it brought back all kinds of memories. It was a truly Jackson, MS paper, and that's is meant as a sincere compliment.

Agreed. Clarion Ledger used to be a real good paper with excellent sports writers. Some people thought they were somewhat biased toward Ole Miss, and they probably were many years ago, but they got more evenly balanced later (at least in my opinion). Shame that the paper has regressed so far.
