Honestly, I like my idea for a new UkIT better.

Have the three Kentucky OVW schools face off against WKU, NKU and UK. They’d rotate each year with WKU and NKU playing two afternoon games against the Kentucky OVW. Then have a break, let folks grab dinner, etc and UK playing the remaining team Kentucky OVW school.

would be a fun thing for the state

I am hoping someday we start playing games in Lexington again. I miss see Kentucky playing in Lexington, Used to be a big topic of discussion that UK would schedule Notre Dame in Louisville during Christmas time. Now we play those games in Vegas or Chicago.

I like that idea. In some form or fashion, get UK, UofL, WKU, EKU, Morehead, Murray, NKU etc invovled. Actually thats 7. I feel like Im forgetting someone? If not, perhaps toss a bone to one of the lower division schools each year and rotate them in.

We're playing a lot of cupcakes in the OOC anyway. This would actually get my attention and excitement. Invariably someone will argue "we dont have anything to gain by playing all of them." No...nor do we have anything to gain by playing Evansville, North Dakota, Monmouth, Tennessee State, Lamar, Fairleigh Dickinson , etc.

Id rather see the in state schools on our schedule.

Bring in huge teams. Make it something everyone wants to get invited to and attend.

After I got out of the Army I worked for NCR in Dayton and I had to work on Sat. so I drove to Lexington for the Fri. night game, drove back ,worked ,then went back for the Sat. night game. My wife thought I was crazy! I saw some very good games at the UKIT. Gas was reasonable back then, but looking back, I was crazy about UK BB and still am.

Wouldn't this be the equivalent of showing off the hotter, younger girlfriend in front of the ex? Or was I the only one who did that?

When it first started the UKIT was the premier tournament in college basketball. UK invited only the top ranked teams. Some of the all time greats played in that tournament.

Inviting the teams mentioned would be an insult to UK fans and the memory of the tournament. If we have to play these teams at least rename the tournament. Please do not call it the UKIT

Right, back in the day some really good teams played in the UKIT. West Virginia, as you said, North Carolina, Duke, Michigan, Purdue, Utah, Syracuse, Texas A&M, BYU, etc. However, it got harder to attract quality teams as everyone started having their own tournament around the holidays. Two of the most interesting games I recall watching were the 1968 UKIT game against Michigan that UK won 112-104. The next year Kentucky played Duke in the finals and won 98-76. Duke came into the game undefeated after beating a very good Dayton team in the semis. It was close for a while but Kentucky destroyed them in the second half winning 98-76. I think that Duke's coach, Bucky Waters, really developed a hatred for Kentucky after that.

Put Louisville and Kentucky in different brackets and then pick top 4 Kentucky teams which could be Western, Eastern, Murray, Morehead or N. Kentucky. Then let winners play Louisville and Kentucky and then let Louisville and Kentucky play (if they won their game) for championship instead of current December game. Could add Notre Dame and Indiana and let 8 Kentucky teams play with UK, Louisville, Notre Dame and Indiana getting byes..

UCLA, Duke and LaSalle played in the first ever UKIT. LaSalle were the defending national champs if I’m not mistaken.
Over the years it kinda went downhill. At first, however, it was the premier Holiday Tournament.
I think it was December of 1978, all four teams were ranked in the Top 20: The Cats, Illinois, Texas A&M and SMU (or was it Syracuse??)
Anyway, I loved the UKIT.
For some reason, Pitino did away with it.

In 1978, the year after we won the title, you are correct. All of the teams were ranked and that's probably the last time that four quality teams played in the tournament. A&M was very good and beat us in the first round 73-69, as I recall. It seemed as if UK was going to be 0-2 in it's own tournament but regrouped and beat a very good Syracuse team the next night. Alexsinas had a career game but left shortly after that. Illinois ended up winning the tournament and also had a very good team. After that the tournament did go downhill and it became hard to find good teams that would come to Lexington.

Just thot I’d add, the last one I attended, UK played Purdue with Joe Barry Carroll for the championship.

We play enough bad teams that screw up our seeding as it is. When UL wasn't in the ACC I wanted there to be a bluegrass versus tobacco road series. We play Duke and they play UNC and then swap back and forth each year. Doesn't work with them being in the ACC now. Plus it would have to be at a neutral site because Coach K wouldn't play on the road for it.

We just need to start scheduling more middle of the pack power 5 teams in the non conference schedule to home and home games. We'd get more out of playing them and if we did lose it wouldn't hurt us as bad as losing to a mid major and having to hear about it all year. I actually wish the NCAA would restrict the number of mid majors each team can play or penalize you harder for playing to many.

I believe 7 of our 12 non conference opponents were mid majors with only 2 of the 5 power conference opponents being played at home. The other 3 were neutral site games. I'd rather just play 1 big neutral site game and the rest be home and away if you are only going to play 5 power 5 opponents. You play more than you can be more flexible with where they are played without screwing the home crowd all the time.
