Pebble Beach Pro-Am this weekend.Only 3 top 20 players in the field including Speith and Hovland. Top players played Torrey Pines last week and will skip Pebble before playing Waste Management next week.

My brother lives in Scottsdale and said that Troon courses are getting 500+ per round out there now. With the Super Bowl in Glendale AZ next week the golf rates will be sky high through April.

Playing golf with the wife once a week becomes fairly expensive, ha!
Not the biggest fan of the ProAm. Too much TV time spent on some amateur Exec VP of marketing at some minor sponsor. Blah.

Going through the process at my club you got that question often. “Does your wife play golf?”

The correct response is, “I’m not sure I’ve never asked her.”

I actually kind of enjoy the Pro Am... though yeah, maybe a little time with "Art Vandelay executive VP at Vandelay Enterprises, a 15 handicap".

I had an "opportunity" to play Pebble Beach about 12 years ago, but didn't. I was out there for a funeral at the end of February . Hadn't touched my clubs since putting them away in November. Couple of buddies said I should call to see if there was a single opening, maybe get lucky. I didn't call as I didn't want to drop the $600 or whatever it was to play, with rental clubs, having not touched my clubs in at least 3 months.

What would you have done?

It's fun to attend but yeah, not the best TV watching especially the early rounds. Went the Feb right before the world shut down due to Covid. Was a great time.

At least on Sunday, the TV broadcast tends to just follow the pros and the big name celebs who made the cut.

Cold, 55F, damp and getting windy at Pebble today. Course is far more challenging than yesterday. Not too many people on the Carmel beach.

Im rooting for Justin Rose and Harry Higgs.

Anyone who has played Pebble remembers every hole on the course. If you ever get the opportunity be sure to do it for your bucket list.

Great experience there a few years ago. You do remember every hole. But in all fairness, after 10, when you turn back inland, there are some pretty plain/mundane holes. 16 is an interesting hole. Short but the green is crazy. The water holes, specifically 6-7-8-9-10 and then back out to the water on 17 and then obviously 18 more than make up for some of the more bland holes.

We played the one course at Half Moon Bay on way down from San Fran. Then we played Spanish Bay, Spyglass, Pebble and then on the return ride back to San Fran we played Pasatiempo. If you have a chance to play it, do it. It's fantastic.

Unusual finish at Pebble Beach due to the weather. Looks like they will play 9 holes in round 4 this afternoon and finish with 9 holes tomorrow morning.

Not a great leader board but Justin Rose and Victor Hovland are in contention. Tomorrows weather looks pretty windy.

This tournament has lost its luster being sandwiched between Torrey Pines last week and Waste Management Scottsdale next week during Super Bowl weekend.

Yeah well this was big with Bing Crosby and the Rat Pack (unless I'm remembering wrong) and they've been gone for 50 years.

The circus in Scottsdale starts Thursday. Given it's basically a mandatory event, the field is really strong. I think the only two Top 20 OGWR guys (yeah, I know) not playing are Cam Smith and Zalatoris (injury).

Nice comeback after a T66 and MC in his first 2 Tourneys.

He's played 10 rounds with only 1 round under par, a -2.

He's got 9 more events to make whatever the benchmarks are for staying the full year on the Tour.

The Tour is in Bogota this week.

By the way, there was a bunch of LIV news over the last two months.

- LIV has their TV deal but CW isn't paying them. They will apparently split ad revenues and LIV still has to incur all the costs of production.

- In December, the LIV COO resigned which came as a total shock to many. But apparently, he left because the Saudis were a bit peeved that greater inroads hadn't been made to date (My comment: As some said, the Saudis are gonna have a quick trigger on this thing - they will pull the plug without notice if they think it's not working).

- The LIV antitrust suit and the PGA countersuit slog on. The PGA attorneys want to extend the court date scheduled for Jan 24th. LIV is arguing that any delays hurts their league and their players. PGA is claiming that discovery has been slow and that some players/employees of LIV have been dragging their feet on providing stuff (or simply ignoring the requests). In addition, the Saudi Fund and the governor have also ignored all requests for documents.

- LIV attorneys admitted in court that LIV basically made no money last year.

Played 36 at Pasatiempo a few years ago. Absolutely loved it, and want to go back. Played both courses at Half Moon Bay. Can't remember much of the courses, but remember liking them. Also played TPC Harding Park. Would skip this one without a second thought if I go back.
Loved TPC Scottsdale. Played the final four holes in -2, though 17 was different then (less water). Played it the day after Pandemonium in Piscataway. 16 wasn't fully enclosed though when I was there.

On the last point, I read that they had no revenues. Not sure how that’s possible. PGA just need to weather the first 2 rounds and LIV will be tired and get KO.

Really surprised they did not do a Wednesday-Saturday this year due to the Super Bowl being so close in proximity.

TPC Scottsdale is about a 30 minute drive to the stadium in Glendale. The venues are on the opposite sides of the Phoenix area. The golf tournament draws far more attendance on a daily basis than the football game.

Hotel rooms in Scottsdale are going for 1500+ per night this week.

Found this about what you said:
>After record-breaking attendance in 2022 with over 719,000 fans, the WM Phoenix Open returns to TPC Scottsdale tomorrow, Feb. 6.

“We're going to have probably 90,000 people per day at a minimum,” said tournament Chairman Pat Williams.<

Superbowl ticket prices and seating capacity might be factors.
Price will be met and not a factor in my opinion, capacity of Stadium is the factor.when comparing attendance.
State Farm Stadium has a capacity of 63,400 people, but can be expanded for "mega events" to fit 73,000 people..
If seating was 200,000, I believe it would be filled with people paying top dollar.

Watching the WM Phoenix open now, and just remembered how manicured the course was. Fairways & tee boxes were like field turf.

$3.6M prize money to the winner this week and $20M total purse.

Tour players can thank LIV Golf for increased PGA tournament payouts this season.
For the PGA players that hate LIV so much, feel free to turn down the extra prize money and stick to pre-LIV payouts. Your integrity doesn't have a price, right? LOL!

They stuck with the REAL Tour not the dog and pony show run by the Saudis. Their loyalty is being rewarded.

I guess that's a foreign concept to some.

I like the pro-am too, having grown up with it, plus Pebble is such an incredible course. One of my favorite rounds ever, back in the early 90s when I played a lot more. Was in SD for a conference for a week (had my clubs with me) and then my wife flew out and we did a week in Cali, driving up the PCH with stops, including Monterey where I got to play Pebble and then finishing in SF.

Because it’s a fake business. They know it’s not going to be around long. Virtually zero revenue in the 1st year. LOL

Zero revenue means they have zero paid sponsors. Didn’t realize it was that bad.

WM tournament in Scottsdale this week blows away anything LIV has to offer.

The Bird’s Nest is rocking every night after the tournament with big name musical acts and huge attendance.

LIV is going to be broadcasted on The CW. I read the other day LIV isn't going to be paid by the network. They'll only get a portion of advertising. What corporations are going to attach their name to it?

That's what's going to be interesting - to see who advertises during their events. From what has been reported, CW has limited downside risk here other than maybe reputational but as like the 25th ranked "regular" channel does that matter?

LIV has to pay the production costs. All CW has to is broadcast the events and split the ad revenue. It's a calculated risk for them. If LIV explodes and is really popular, they reap the benefits. If LIV is a dud, so what? Their investment is minimal.

The 13th.... didn't it used to have a split fairway? I seem to remember a "shortcut" down the left side, but it had a very narrow fairway, while the right side of the split with the trees etc, was wider and safer
