Lucky for me, my Polish relatives came to this country during WWI and thus avoided the fate of the Polish people stuck between Hitler and Stalin in the 40s.

2 of my great uncles were killed in Poland and another survived a “work” camp but was never the same.

I'd argue that WWII started when Japan invaded China two years earlier, but yeah. What an awful time for Poland. They had won their independence from the Red Army barely twenty years earlier.

The USSR also "annexed" Lituania, Latvia and Estonia in August 1989. Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact was signed just a week before Polish invasion.
