Is Eddie Murray one of them? I recall him being the first of a milestone.

Alex Rodriguez actually signed his $252 million dollar contract on the same day as Manny's $160 million dollar contract. The start of the ultra-inflated baseball contracts.

Trinity (not Duke in 1921) used assorted variations on their Methodist heritage. Fighting Methodists, for example. Blue and White was also used.

UNC was the White Phantoms.

Okay. Here's one.

Bucky Waters resigned as Duke head coach right before the beginning of the 1973-'74 season. AD Carl James gave Neil McGeachy a year. But before hiring MGeachy, James almost hired an out-of-work Hall-of-Famer.

Who did James almost hire to replace Bucky Waters?

Yep.

Rupp had been forced into retirement because of a mandatory-retirement age for Kentucky state employees.
He was none to happy about it.

James was ready to hire him with the understanding that it would be a one-year deal.

But Rupp had huge agricultural interests in Kentucky. His farm manager died unexpectedly and Rupp felt like he had to turn down James and Duke.

Jim I often wonder how we would have done that year- perhaps at least two agonizingly heartbreakers to UNC better, but who knows??

This isnt too old, but it was nothing short of bizarre. Name the player who left the UNC bench in the 90s in the 1st half of an ACC game...

Added bonus pts: Name the opponent, the facility and the UNC coach....

One of those what-ifs. But it was always going to be a one-year stint, so he wouldn't have been able to recruit on any other basis. And I strongly suspect Foster would still have been next-man-up.

As an aside, it's weird to think of people like Rupp, John Wooden, Bobby Knight, John Wooden, Woody Hayes, et. al as state employees. But they were.

As an aside2, I read recently that in about half the states, the highest-paid state employee is a college football coach.

As an aside3, I did an article on McGeachy 10 or 15 years ago. Thirty seconds into the phone interview, before any mention of the "I" word, he let me know that he was never an interim coach. He had a one-year contract but the word "interim" was never used.

A semantical difference perhaps but very important to McGeachy.

So, if you ever meet him be forewarned. :)

Great. We could have had two racists at the same time, Rupp and Slaughter..

Jim thats interesting- I guess I always thought of him as interim. I believe after he left I heard Neil left he worked for "Sugar Creek Enterprises." Perhaps it was his own biz, but I think they put on various events like ACC hoopsters barnstorming tours at end of season...

McInnis would have been the type to pull such a stunt (esp if he left his "Ford" running in the parking lot), but not him....A little later and not in Cameron...On right track Sky-it was a guard...

Don't remember this one. But if not McInnis, perhaps Shammond Williams at Reynolds. Maybe Guthridge as the coach?
