I'm not real high on the confidence meter with this one but I'll take a stab at it.

South Carolina, Utah, and Rutgers.

I had forgotten about Northwestern and wasn't sure on Rutgers.....

Ok, here's an easy one...

Name the Duke center who was All American in 1976 who also went on to be an All Pro.

Ok. Back to Yankee baseball. Yankee Captain Thurmon Munson died in a plane crash in which he was flying on August 2, 1979. The next day the Yankees began a 4 game home stand with the Baltimore Orioles. During a pre game ceremony all the Yankees went to their positions for a moment of silence for the fallen captain except for the catcher whose spot remained empty until after the ceremony. Whose was the catcher that day that stepped into Munson's position. OFC

Sky I almost stated that you would be ineligible for this one. :)

I guess Billy is still a businessman in Burlington huh?

You're up buddy.

I couldn't miss this one. Billy is a friend of mine. I used to go by the family sporting goods a lot. Billy worked there the during the summer even after going with the Broncos. So down to earth that you forgot he was an All-American football player and a NFL player. He was always messing around and kidding with anyone. After football he went to work for the FBI. His brother Curry told me he was in on some big time white-collar bust that had scammed a lot of people out of investments back in the 90's. I haven't seen Billy in a while and understand he has retired from the FBI now. Truly if you ever met him you would think he's just your run of the mill everyday Duke fan. His brother Curry is a face book friend but I never have thought about to check to see if Billy is on face book. OFC

I knew you would get that one easy.

I remember the sporting goods store when I was at Elon. I don't recall if I ever met Billy or not, its been a while....

And by the way, have you seen Dickie Mills anytime recently?

Haven't seen Dickie in a long time. Did run into his wife a while back but didn't talk much. OFC

Just for those interested I got in touch with Billy's brother through face book and he confirmed that Billy retired from the F.B.I. and does security work part time. He has homes in Birmingham Ala. and his hometown of Burlington , N.C. Billy played at Duke when there wasn't a lot of really good football players coming through. To become an All-American was indeed rare for a Duke player. OFC

If you two are finished going down Memory Lane together, maybe you could come up with a question.:)

Now that I figured out what the question was, I'll come up with what is probably a wrong answer. The only other catcher I can recall from that era was Jerry Narron. Not exactly a hall-of-famer.

In 1967 Duke's baseball coach died suddenly. The Athletic Director reached out to one gentleman, who declined the position but who recommended someone else. That "someone else" took the job as baseball coach. Three part question:
a) who was the Athletic Director?
b) who was the AD's first choice?
c) who got the job?

I have no idea but I'm guessing that Enos Slaughter falls in there somewhere. OFC

Pure guesswork....
1/Eddie Cameron I think (Carl James later?)
2/No idea on 1st choice
3/Enos "Country" Slaughter

Country Slaughter succeeded the coach in question. (To me, that was not a great hire, since Enos was famous for trying to hurt Jackie Robinson). So it goes.

My dad met Enos Slaughter at a baseball card show when I was a kid and got him to autograph one of his baseball cards and a baseball for me while I was in the hospital having surgery

Hint. There are no obscure names here. Think Pantheons. Think Zeus, Hercules, and Thor.

Done with the computer for tonight. More hints tomorrow, if necessary. I really didn't expect this to be that difficult. Good night.

Guess it's time for some hints. Hart got the AD right...He had an indoor stadium named after him.
The man who was offered the job is probably the most famous baseball player to wear a Duke uniform.
The man who became coach went on to much bigger and better things at Duke.
OK...go.

Tom Butters was my P.E. instructor in 1968.

How cool was that?
Did he demonstrate his one-arm, extension, fingertip push-ups? I still think it's physically impossible, even though I saw it with my own eyes. Did you also know he beat Ted Kluszewski in arm wrestling?

Al Woodall was supposed to be Duke's starting QB in 1968 but flunked out. Sophomores Leo Hart and Dave Trice split time early before Hart pulled away.
