Does it have something to do with Eddie Cameron like where he coached before Duke? I've heard of Washington and Lee and maybe Cameron being connected. Haven't heard of the other two I presume schools. OFC

Nah.

This may be too tough.

Eddie Cameron graduated from Washington and Lee
Harold Bradley graduated from Hartwick
Bill Foster graduated from Elizabethtown.

Three of the most successful coaches in Duke history went to schools most people have never heard of.

In fact, Vic Bubas is the only Duke head coach who ever played in an NCAA Tournament game.

Something easier.

Name the former Duke player whose grandfather was ACC Player of the Year.

My question getting away from Duke a little while. Who is Pumspie Green. What professional team did he break in with. What decade did he break into with this professional team. What position did he play. And what was significant about his debut. Bonus. He had a brother play another professional sport. What's his brother's name and who did he spend most if not all of his career with. OFC

Who could forget a guy named Pumpsie? Seriously?

I had his baseball cards.

Wish I still did. Might be worth something.

Ooops. I guess I gave away the sport.

It's getting late.

For those of you dying to know, Jerry (Pumpsie) Green was a mediocre second baseman for the Boston Red Sox in the early 1960s. His claim to fame is that he was the first African America to play for the BoSox. If early '60s seems awfully late in the game for that sort of thing, you are correct. Boston was the last major-league team to integrate.

His brother Cornell had more athletic success. He was an All-American basketball player at Utah State and somehow managed to carve out a long and productive NFL career with the Cowboys despite the fact that he did not play football at Utah State.

In honor of Father's Day, I'll throw out an easy one.

Name the father and son who both played for Duke Final Four teams.

Extra credit if you can name the third relative who played in a Final Four for another team.

Correct
Or should I say "Yep?"

Bruce Buckley played for Carolina in 1977. He was at the center of the 1977 title game's most controversial and critical moment.

Carolina had rallied from an eight-or-so point deficit to tie Marquette.

Dean Smith called for the four corners, blunting UNC's momentum.

Even worse, Mike O'Koren was on the bench for a rest. MOK was the team's best four corners finisher. But Buckley was in instead.

Now, we all know about Smith's tendency to hoard his timeouts. He refused to use one to get O'Koren back in.

Carolina ran off a few minutes. Buckley went back door and got the pass. Bo Ellis blocked the shot, Marquette got the ball and never looked back.

Now Ellis was a darn good player and maybe he blocks O'Koren. But there's a reason O'Koren played eight seasons in the NBA and Buckley was a career back up.

This sequence is frequently cited by folks who think Smith was not a master of in-game adjustments.

Back to your regular programming.

And Happy Father's Day.

There's a ESPN show which highlighted Final Fours fairly in-depth. The infamous point in the '77 final where Dean pulled back to bring Marquette out played perfectly into the Warriors hands according to McGuire....UNC lost their rhythm, or as the former Belmont-Abbey coach said:"Their sweat dried."

Al's boys were clearly on the ropes and McGuire got a 2nd wind, thanks to Dean's delay game...Bruce Buckley in for O'Koren and no TO on that possession- indeed, OUCH!! Too bad as well if you were for UNC, the shot clock wasnt around yet- Heels might have won...

Ironically, speaking of Marquette there's a game about two years later at their place NBC on Sunday afternoon...Duke was playing there and McGuire, Packer and Enberg were on the call...Duke had come back late, then went into a delay game...Similar results, as Blue Devils lost a heartbreaker...IIRC Kenny Dennard had been out and that was his first game back..."Yep"

Yep on Dennard. He missed six games with a thigh contusion.

I'm throwing away a potential question here.

But.

This 1980 game was played in Madison. It was a return for a 1979 Duke-Marquette game in Cameron, which Duke won. It was the first nationally-televised game at Cameron.

Jimmy thx- knew you would know...Speaking of Kenny we also missed him and badly in the '79 regionals. Of course Duke lost to St.John's as the NCAA Regionals opened....Jim use your own judgement on below questions and if no one answers after a while please chime in and/or give hints (this is childs play for you)...

We played the 2nd game that day in 1979. What two teams played the first game and who won? Where was this doubleheader played? Where did the two winners play a week later?

Yep Buckin you are correct and UNC losing the first game eased the pain somewhat of: "Black Sunday." Actually they matched up the next weekend back in Greensboro, where UNC had defeated us in the ACC Finals...Bob Bender had missed the Finals w/appendectomy, and then I believe he and Dennard missed the St Johns game...Story went Kenny got hurt playing hoops w/some members of Duke football team...

Black Sunday. North Carolina was seeded No. 1 and Duke was seeded No. 2. The teams had split four games that season, Duke winning in the Big Four, Carolina in the ACCT and a regular-season split--including the Airball Game.

It was all set up for an epic fifth set in Greensboro.

Until it wasn't.

When Duke defeated Maryland in the '80 ACC Final in Greensboro, why were so few in attendance?

Buck I think Albert King's shot is still deciding whether to fall in or not. It didnt clang off the rim-he put it up there soft and Kenny made SURE Williams would NOT tip it in!!

This game marked Duke's final ACC Tourney final for several years....When did they make it back to the final, and who was the opponent???

The only one of those 3 schools I'd ever heard of was Elizabethtown and that's only because I've been going to White Lake since I was about 14 or 15 years old and Elizabethtown is only about 15 minutes from White Lake lol

I was recruited to play soccer at Hartwick. Beautiful place a few hours from me. However, I had the chance to go to my dream school and couldn't pass it up.

I know where White Lake is.

Elizabethtown College is in Pennsylvania.

Even when Foster was coaching away from the east, he always came back to the Poconos to run a summer camp.
