Regarding the issue of hustling - if your a .220 hitter you run hard down to first on a dropped third strike. If your a .200 hitter who leads the majors in extra base hits, do you really have to risk an injury on a play that is rarely successful?

The one time in the outfield it looked like he didn't hustle was on a ball that hit he wall and got past the centerfielder. It went for an inside the park home run. Replay showed that it actually was a legitimate home run above the line. Maybe Cespides has good eyesight and knew that.

I'm happy to say that there is not total disrespect for the National Anthem.

While tailgating in the Blue Lot for the WSU game the 20-somethings next to us played Whitney Houston doing her rendition of the song. Everyone within earshot stood up, took off their hats, hands over heart and faced towards an American flag that was flying in the lot. It was a pretty nice moment.

I'm a lifelong Mets fan. There has never been a player who arrived and instantly carried the team like Cespedes has this season (closest was Clendenon but that was before my time). Nitpicking where he hit his homers is ridiculous, he has hit them at key moments. Sure, he had to cool off at some point but is starting to hit the ball real hard again. His play in centerfield has been unexpectedly good. Has a cannon for an arm. 5 tool player in his prime. Teammates appear to love him. You are clearly a Yankee fan so I can see why you would be jealous.

If he explodes in the post season, he will get a giant contract. Huge money. Huge risk. Should the Mets advance into the Series, there would be significant outrage if he is not offered a competitive deal by ownership. Most likely he will have several strong years where he is worth the money, followed by decline in which he will be overpaid for his production. But that is the nature of the business these days.

Willis, With all due respect the National Anthem is not about government meetings or events. And no one goes to a sporting event to sing the National Anthem. It is a sign of respect and loyalty to one's country. It has been at sporting, as well as other, events long before there were the high powered advertising agencies you feel use it to promote their products. It was started when most people loved their country and were truly proud to be Americans. To call it a marketing ploy is an insult! If you attend the game today and are there for our anthem just pause and think if Rutgers is playing it to market their product . Then say a little prayer for those who sacrificed so you could be standing there.

My problem with him is an unexplained mystery. Dude has serious talent but teams never keep him. 4 different teams in less than 4 years in the majors. That's usually a sign of a problem somewhere with his type of talent.

You should go back to the Mets thread when you kept bringing up this point, and people responded with facts, but you refused to believe the reasoning.

I'm a lifelong Mets fan. There has never been a player who arrived and instantly carried the team like Cespedes has this season (closest was Clendenon but that was before my time). Nitpicking where he hit his homers is ridiculous, he has hit them at key moments. Sure, he had to cool off at some point but is starting to hit the ball real hard again. His play in centerfield has been unexpectedly good. Has a cannon for an arm. 5 tool player in his prime. Teammates appear to love him. You are clearly a Yankee fan so I can see why you would be jealous.

If he explodes in the post season, he will get a giant contract. Huge money. Huge risk. Should the Mets advance into the Series, there would be significant outrage if he is not offered a competitive deal by ownership. Most likely he will have several strong years where he is worth the money, followed by decline in which he will be overpaid for his production. But that is the nature of the business these days.

I have less of a problem with a foreign player not standing for the anthem than in the cases where they turn their back to the flag. Turning your back is an insult and that would be totally unacceptable.

Exactly. Why should you care what a Yankee fan thinks about him. Don't watch the Mets game to see firsthand the impact he's had but look at some paper stats and decide that his talents are overstated. They should worry about their own team.
