My baby brother is having his "destination wedding" in Honolulu. Unfortunately the schedule doesn't allow for trips to any of the other islands besides Oahu, and yes I've already Googled it. Any suggestions for 'off the radar' things to do or see? Thanks.

I don't think this really counts as "out of the way," but

Snorkling at Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve was incredible.

I stayed in Waikiki beach in Honolulu. In my opinion, if you get bored there you're a miserable person. I never left the beach except to eat, and 10 minutes removed from my resort there was a BWW playing all the games I wanted to watch on tape delay (tropical beaches + wings + beer = oasis). 5 minutes the other direction was a touristy tropical take on Bourbon Street minus the open containers. It was "ok."

But if you want to adventure out, as did we, visit Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve Park. I've been some places and seen some **** in my short life... That is one of if not the most beautiful place I've ever been.

On the way back stop at McDonald's and get what they sell in place of apple pies. They're delicious.

I'll second (fifth?) Haunama Bay snorkeling. I'd never done anything like that before, and it was awesome.

The Dole Pineapple plantation is neat if you're interested in that. The Polynesian Cultural Center in Lai'e does a cool luau and show. Definitely check out Pearl Harbor. Diamondhead was closed when I was there, but I've heard great things about it.

And there are great beaches all over the island. In Hawaii the government owns all of the beaches so anyone can go anywhere. I'm not into surfing, but if you are apparently the beaches at the North Shore are the best place in the world for that.

Yes, these were definitely a memorable experience.

Climb Koko head in the dark to experience the sunrise, do the "stairway to heaven" this is a bucket list type item that takes planning/logistics and jump off Waimea Bay rock at the North Shore.

Pearl Harbor and the Northshore. I hated Honolulu because it's like someone stuck Los Angeles traffic on an island. You can hike up Diamondhead too.

I really liked Maui better.

I would first suggest going with girlfriend. Stay on Waikkei Beach, first night there go downstairs and buy a pack of Marlboro lights and hopefully when you come back up, all lights are off, a dozen candles lit and mattress is pulled off bed and onto balcony.
Then you can proceed with the full Hawaiian experience!
Other than that and a mile high adventure on Aloha Air to Maui, an ultimate Road to Hana trip with Bud Light for her to wash it down with, I can't offer too much more than that.
You'll have to figure it out on your own.
Good luck!

Read a guide or something on how to best do Pearl Harbor. You want to get there 1st thing in the morning as it is obviously a major attraction. They have two museums that are great. If I remember correctly Pearl Harbor and the USS Arizona was a free. You can pay to do other things, such as tour the Bowfin Submarine.

My favorite beach was Waimea Bay, much better than Waikiki Beach.

We did do a catamaran deal right of Waikiki Beach that took us out to snorkel with sea turtles, which was decent.

Just driving a lap around the island a time or two is great. The road goes from tunnels through the mountains to right along the beach, great views

If you're a fan of the TV show "Lost", they give a tour of most of the filming places. It was kinda surreal standing on the place where the beach camp was. You could totally tell by the horizon line that it was where it was filmed. Jin and Sun's wedding location is actually an asian-american graveyard/temple.

I've been to Hawaii about a dozen times so I'll wade in on this. Waikiki is a nice place to stay but it's a tourist area. Shorebird lounge. It's on the beach and you can just enjoy the scenery. Go to the North shore, Waimea bay is where the big waves roll in, right across the highway is Waimea Bay state park, worth the visit as is the previously mentioned Polynesian cultural center. Pearl Harbor, USS Missouri, USS Arizona memorial as must do's.
On Saturdays they have a big flea market at Aloha stadium, go there to buy your souvenirs and gifts cheap, including Hawaiian shirts.

Pearl Harbor and the Arizona are still free. Get there before a few minutes before it opens, get in line and go straight for the Arizona tickets.

Having BWW and McDonald's recs in a Hawaii thread, awesome. I can't say much as I'm on a plane getting ready to head to cancun where I'll likely have to find a sports bar to watch the CWS, but still comical.

Hawaii things

We went last July and here is the best of the best.

Forget Hanauma Bay and snorkel Shark's Cove on the North Shore instead. Its free, you park right at it, and not as crowded. Same fish. While on the North Shore, check out the famous Bonzai Pipeline and the jumping rock at Wiamea Bay.

Other must do is take trip around island and check out the shrimp trucks on the north east side of the island. Also a must is try the super-sweet roasted Hawaiian corn at Uncle Woody's while up there. There is a macadamia nut plantation on that side of the island also.

Check out the Pali Overlook, Pearl Harbor, Dole Pineapple. Hike Diamondhead or the Koko Crater. There are a couple breweries on Oahu you can tour/taste also. Hike one of the thousand forest trails. We hiked the Maunawilli Falls one, and it was cool, a 4 mile round trip.

isit the Blowhole and From Here to Eternity Beach. If you go down to the beach, you can go around and get right on top of the blowhole.

If you want souveniers, go to the swap meet at Aloha Stadium.

Go to a luau. We went to Germaine's. If you go to Germaine's, buy the souvineir cup and they will refill it with drinks for free instead of the small cups.

Spend the rest of the time on Waikiki Beach.

My best advice is to buy this book: http://www.amazon.com/Oahu-Revealed-Ultimate-Honolulu-Revisited/dp/0983888701

/\/\/\/\/\ very good recs
Do they charge for Haunama Bay now? It is crowded but it is still an easy snorkel with lots of fish.
Last August it was something like $8 a person.

Also in August, we went to Pearl Harbor and walked right in. Maybe August is a nonpeak month? I never experienced any traffic or lines.

Take twice the money and half the clothes you think you need.

Last year 7 days in Hawaii cost me 2 grand more than 13 nights in Italy the same year! Most expensive place I have ever visited. I can fly to Rome cheaper than Honolulu from Denver.

Must mention that if you do Shark's Cove, you have to bring your own gear. I think you can rent gear at Haunama Bay. Costs money to get in and to ride the shuttle. It's a long walk up and down the bluff if you don't take the shuttle.

I've been living on one of the less populated, less touristy Hawaiian Islands for a few years now. I go to Oahu mainly for business but I spend an extra day or 2 sometimes especially if I know someone who happens to be there on vacation. If you are looking for off the radar here is what is suggest.

Food
Sansei - sushi place in east Waikiki (think it is in or beside a marriot) Half price sushi menu after 10pm on Friday and Saturday night, 21 and over only after 10pm, bar like atmosphere with Karaoke but you can sit outside to get away from the noise. Extremely good food for the price. Panko crusted ahi roll is great and always on half price menu.

Sidestreet Inn - hole in the wall place on a one way street a few blocks from Ala Moana mall. Serves local style food. Great fried rice and garlic chicken

Marukame Udon - There will be a line of Japanese tourists down the block but it moves quick and is really good and really cheap. Its located on Kuhio Ave in Waikiki

Nico's at pier 38 is also good and inexpensive for lunch or dinner its located right next to the fish auction so they have a new menu everyday based on what is available

Eat some Poke. Its just raw fish (usually ahi) mixed with a sauce and seasonings. Don't have to get it from a restaurant, any grocery store deli/seafood counter will have it

Activities:
I recommend a sunset booze cruise off Waikiki over a mid day snorkel trip. A flat rate gets you a few hours on the water and includes free drinks. Better deal than paying $6/beer in a beach front bar.

Lanikai beach on the east side of the island is the best beach on the island. Not sure if its on the map but if you go to Kailua beach park you're in the right area. There is a trail that goes up a small ridge in the neighborhood behind Lanikai that gives some pretty great views and if you follow it far enough it leads to some old WW2 era pill boxes.

I've heard the polynessian cultural center has a great luau show but it is run by the Hawaii BYU campus which means they do not serve alcohol.

Hanauma bay is a tourist trap, all the coral is dead due to the thousands of people stepping on it daily, there is a fee to get in, a line to pay the fee, a video you have to watch before you can go to the bay and a line to watch the video. Rent some snorkel equipment for a few bucks a day at any of the hundred places on the island that rent and ask for a map of good spots you'll get plenty of spots with the same fish and way less people/hassle of Hanauma bay. Sharks cove as mentioned by others is a good spot.

Most of the stuff I've recommended is easily done if you are staying in Waikiki or the south side of the island. If you stay on the north shore a lot of this stuff will be a hassle due to distance and the 3rd worst traffic in US but the north shore is great especially in summer when the big waves aren't rolling in so you can actually swim and there aren't huge crowds to watch the surfer. I could go for awhile about the weather patterns, the wind and ocean conditions but i'd just advise you find a good website and read up on it, most of the info you pay for in a guide book can be found online for free. Also be advised most 'off the radar' beaches, waterfalls, streams, valleys, etc. will have a Hawaiian name, an English name and sometimes a local slang name, its easy to get confused and another great reason to read up things.

Waikiki (or most of Honolulu) was on par with Panama City Beach in my mind, just had better beaches and interesting nature related places to go between the hours of 10 and 6.

The locals live in shanties, there's a massive problem homeless population and meth labs, and the average income of people on the island is low...... Because they work in the service industry, cleaning hotel rooms and serving drinks.

You won't find world class restaurants. You pick between places like Hard Rock Cafe.

I'm not complaining in the least. It was amazing. I want to go back. But Honolulu isn't Maui or Oahu. And I was there for 2 weeks coinciding with the kickoff of the NFL season. So hell yeah I ate at BWW, and hell yeah I grabbed Mickey D's one day. Eating at restaurants like Benihana and Ruth's Chris (Honolulu's idea of fine dining) got expensive... And I've GOTTA have my football.

All I'm saying is that the coconut pie whatever at Hawaiian McDonald's is 17ing great. Maybe it was filled with meth. I don't know. Maybe after spending 4 years in Starkville my standard to which I rank my experiences is on how good the fast food is, after all the best burger in Starkville is McDonald's according to sources.

I now live in the culinary capital of planet earth and I still go to BWW before Nets games. It's a sickness really.

Leave the bermudalls at home and pick up a new swim suit. The new Ozarka suit in red or white is what all the cool sixpackers are wearing.

Agree with esplanade, make sure to snorkel Hanauma Bay and definitely skip the volcano. If you are a history buff, you can take in Pearl Harbor's Memorial pretty quick too, but I wouldn't spend a ton of time there. Stay in Waikiki if you can. I recommend the Hilton village, but I'm sure your family has a hotel already planned for family. If you feel like taking a coastal drive, go north, the coast on the north side of the island is a bit more interesting and scenic and you'll see most of the south side on the drive to Hanauma Bay anyway.

I've been to Hawaii several times, once for 35 days. The last time was a vacation. I didn't like Waikiki at all, too crowded, too urban, and too "un-Hawaiian." I spent a week on the Big Island at the Waikaloa, which has gondolas, black volcanic sand, and black sandtraps on their world class golf course. I'd go back. I also spent a week at the Hyatt on on Maui. Maui comes close to real Hawaii, but it is even too commercialized now. Kauai is the most beautiful and least commercialized. I'd go back there in a heartbeat.

I second Nico's. Excellent and right on the water. Hilo Hatties is basically across the road if you want to do some Hawaiian shopping thats not the international marketplace or the swap meet at Aloha Stadium.
