Anyone else dealing with this Atmos gas outage? Apparently an explosion outside of town rendered the system completely unusable. They’ve shut off gas to 20,000 homes and businesses.

Family member of mine was staying at a hotel block in Tupelo for a wedding this weekend. The hotel called and said, you’re free to stay at full price, but there’ll be no warm water and limited heat.

Can’t find any Atmos updates since yesterday. But the rumors are this could last for a week or two before service is restored. Not great with some chilly overnight temps headed in.

Yeah the outage covers most of Lee county and west all the way to Pontotoc. We fortunately have electric water heater and stove. We’ve got friends at our house right now taking showers. And our Church has portable showers set up. Several friends are going to hotels around Memphis for a few nights. Lots of restaurants are closed or working off of limited menus, so that’s gonna hurt a lot of folks. Reports said the explosion “blew the clothes off” two of the workers.

One thing that takes so long is they have to manually shut off every customer, restore the gas service, then go back location to location and turn everyone back on one by one. That takes bleeding the lines and relighting the pilot lights.

One guy can do 5 places an hour if he is rolling.

That sounds like a helluva problem

Then he's going to hit a place like my pops and get asked to go in the attic for main unit, the upstairs hall for the small unit, the stove, the wall ovens, into the laundry room for the dryer, out on the porch to re-light the gas lanterns, the grill out back and finally up to the shop for a couple more.

The old folks are going to wear them out on the re-lights.

Yeah...it's bad. 3 workers were down in a hole checking a possible gas leak, and an explosion occured that injured them to the point their clothes were blown off. One was in critical condition but has been upgraded to stable now.
They have 200 workers in town now with more on the way to help. They are going 18 hours a day trying to get done ASAP.

We live in South central Lee County. Atmos is still cutting off gas. We have no hot water or a stove. The oven is electric and there is a microwave. Do not want to do cold showers, but I might have to.

Not sure about "electric" stoves, but man do these 17ers that have them brag about induction cooktops.**

In a side note. Electric ovens are way better than gas IMO. It's a drier heat that keeps a more consistent temperature.
I don’t know of any chefs that cook on an electric burner.

And tankless water heaters are the only way to go.

Wife wanted a gas range. Traded in our induction cooktop. Takes 3x longer to boil water. Gas isn't as great as I remember.

If you're talking the old electric eye, you're dead on. But induction is electric as well and some of the top chefs in the world are switching over. I was at an equipment show last summer and people were drooling over Garland's induction range. For $30,000 it can be yours.

From a professional standpoint, I think you'll find more and more make the switch over time.

They’ve brought in an absolute **** ton of mini excavators. Anybody know the reason for that? Are they expecting a lot of leaks when they turn it back on? Or is that to gain access to something for purging?

Maybe just part of the kit they always roll with?

Somebody's never been in the military and it shows.

Now, I was never in the military (scored too high was shuttled to the AF instead), but the wifi was out for like 15 minutes one time on a layover in Hawaii. Still wake in a cold sweat thinking about it, but I did get 100% VA disability due to the trauma.

We have induction.
Heats anything up immediately.
You put a pot of water on, go take a whiz, come back and it’s rolling

Anyone hearing any rumors or updates? They’ve got hundreds of workers here working on this. Saw tons of restaurants were feeding Atmos workers for free yesterday.

This is brand new info to me. I’ve heard of induction cook tops but never realized they were considered better than gas. I’m reevaluating a lot of life choices right now. I’m assuming the temp can adjust down very quickly as well? You have to have special pots/pans, right? We’re about to get a new range and was planning to put in gas. Had gas in our last house and loved it. Current house has electric eyes, the wife hates them.

Latest update this morning was that they were starting to restore service. I saw a couple of trucks in my neighborhood when walking the dog around 10am and got hopeful. But they each just went to one house & then left.

Maybe you've got to be special to be first on the list? Or maybe those folks had unofficially tried to turn theirs back on? idk

The pans have to be magnetic, well not magnetic themselves but a magnet must stick to them so no aluminum or stainless steel unless it has a iron or steel plate molded in the bottom. Yes they cool down just as quickly. Ours adjust in 5 degree increments so you can dial it in exactly. You can remove the pan and lay your hand on the eye. It will be warm from heat transfer from the pan but the eye itself never gets hot. If you want to try it get a single induction eye and give it a try, they are cheap. You might already have pans that will work, test with a magnet. I use my single eye all the time out by the grill. I have a built in gas burner on the patio that hasn’t been lit in years, it’s easier to get the induction eye out of the cabinet and use it. Also don’t have to clean soot off the bottom of my pans.

I have a single eye induction cooker. I set it on top of my gas range and use it almost exclusively. Better temp control than gas on both high and low setting.
