That’s not how accusations work. You have to prove your accusation. He doesn’t have to disprove it.
615 made the accusation. I just responded with da truth. Rez just ain't what it used to be. Go hang out at Lakeshore Park on a late Saturday afternoon.

By the way, here is your accusation.....

By the way, NWR peaked in 1995, just like most things in Rankin County and around the Reservoir. Been downhill ever since, most parents want to be at Brandon or Pisgah. Brandon has the zoning to keep out apartments (like Madison) and minimizes riff raff, and Pisgah is the new stuff.

Haha, what the hell kinda accusation is that?

He accused a bunch of parents of being scared of public school. I responded with, well this is why they may not prefer the public school.

Your man love for me is making you stupid. Makes me feel important when I see all those red notifications when I log into 6pack, but then it's disappointing when 80% of them are you raging out.

I’m willing to bet the success rate in life is higher from academies in Mississippi vs public schools
I think that’s a no brainer…. But we all know there are reasons that go way beyond private school being better than public. I think in general, especially in the Jackson metro, the academies are pulling a more affluent crowd that has a much better home situation. They are setup to do better no matter where they go to school. There are plenty of rural academies though that probably don’t even come close to the academic standing of the better public school districts.

All that said, I have absolutely no issue with private schools. I’m all for parents having the right to put their kids in environments they are comfortable with. My kids are in public school in Madison (elementary and middle school) and there is no doubt they are going to encounter a whole different crowd than what kids at MRA do. I can understand why parents wouldn’t want their kids around some of that.

I would probably argue that rural private schools fair better than rural publics schools as well. I think its basically the point made in freakanomics. People who care enough to apply to a charter school or pay for a private school or school choice in general usually are going to excel more than others.

I also have no problem with public schools and would argue if you took my care and want to and put me in madison central, jackson prep, JA, NWR, etc. i'd have been better off than single A private school.

But the number one factor is the student. Several pieces of that puzzle: parents, students ability, students give AF, money, etc.

This thread is disappointing. When I saw it had hit two pages of comments, I was expecting it to be full of receipts for the rankings...

MRA has become more selective in the past few years. They want to cap their classes around 100.

Its not "open admissions" like it used to be. You can't just wake up and decide because you didnt make the public school team you will transfer to MRA.

That list is not wrong. I’d put Prep moms #2, but it’s close. I still don’t understand why well to do but not filthy rich families send their kids to MRA instead of Madison Central or Germantown.

I live in Madison, Alabama, home of the best or second best public school system in the state, depending on who does the rating. My neighbors across the street send their kids to Madison Academy (it's not a segregation academy, but is affiliated with the Church of Christ). It's not nearly as expensive as Randolph School in Huntsville, nor does it have the highly rated academics, but still several thousand a year even though it's subsidized by the church. Two kids are a total of near $25K. It's rated a bit down the list, maybe 4th or 5th, of private schools in the area. I suppose they send them there because they have religious education, but they don't seem to be fanatical (he mows his lawn on Sunday morning), or maybe they just like smaller classes. Anyway, they could save a lot of money by going to the public system but choose not to.

I am aware. But to suggest you can just send your kid over to MRA if he’s riding the bench at Madison Central isn’t true
Maybe it was a slight overgeneralization, but there is a kernel of truth. There are a lot of MRA parents who want their kids playing sports and it's a lot easier to see the field/court with 100 kids in each class than at MC with 400. It's 100% a factor for all those private schools.

Sure, for some kids that may be true. But it’s also a $13k+ a year decision(per child) IF you are accepted

An understated reason for choosing private over public in the Jackson metro is the availability of elementary school sports. They are playing tackle football in 4th grade where public school has to wait until 7th to play a restricted tackle football and 8th to play real tackle football.

It's funny to me watching this when Jackson and anything within 100 miles of it sucks.

My boys played football many years ago, what do you mean, “restricted” in the 6th grade? They didn’t play a full game in the 6th grade, but every thing else was the same. At one time (several years ago) they had “little league” full tackle football at the Rez. It was regular games, playoffs, etc. Can’t remember what age it started (probably too young). Madison had the same thing and probably Brandon too.

there is definitely a lot of bad in Jackson (and I guess 100 miles from it) but I don’t think everything sucks.

Right, you decide much earlier if you think your kid has a shot and get in sooner.
