He's an idiot.Would he publicly state that people will stop spending money in Starkville over a racial issue? What's the difference?

Even if you could be so ignorant and prejudice like JT predicts, you're part of a minority of people who are, thankfully, getting older and shrinking. I assure you no one in my generation gives a ****.

JT is a fat redneck... and an embarrassment to Mississippi State University.

I'm seriously embarrassed that he is associated to our University. The dude is an idiot.

Huge idiot seems to be correct.

Proud of Starkville for doing about he most you can do in the heart of the biblical south - and in a way that it's really difficult to be offended by. The universities probably have the highest LGBT population in the state, so it makes sense for the city that hosts one (I'd wager USM actually has the most, I'm surprised Hattiesburg didn't do something like this first)

You need to leave your bubble. You might think no one in our generation cares but they do just like you can't find any white people in Mississippi who voted for Obama. Someone did. I don't live there and only go when theres a game but I can see how this can hurt commerce in the city.

If you can show me someone

who hates gay people *so* much that a simple empty declaration like this will keep them from spending money in an entire city, I'll show you someone we can do without.

Oh it's just the start...........

according to JT that is. Won't be long before Starkville schools adopt gender-choice bathroom policies.

I don't know the BOA's or Parker's reasoning behind the resolution. Maybe they just did it for the heck of it. But I'm hoping there is some high-tech firm considering Starkville and this is a recruiting ploy. That the BOA is letting them know that everybody is welcome in Starkville. It would be hilarious to hear the Supertalk reaction to something like that happening.

I'm just going by what I saw on Facebook and Twitter on the subject. That seems like a pretty good way to reach the 'under 35' demographic.

I just cannot imagine someone going "man! I tell you what, I aint eating at The Grille anymore since Starkville decided to stop discriminating against the Gays".

I doubt anybody will have a problem with it as it relates to gay people but there may be some people that have an issue with the parts related to gender identify. I don't think many people will have a problem with it at all because it's just a resolution and shouldn't have any legal force. But depending on how carefully the resolution is worded (can't tell one way or the other from the excerpted part) it could be read as inconsistent with the resolution for the city to to require that men use the men's restroom if they identify as female and for women to use the women's restroom if they identify as male, and I don't think it would be completely unreasonable for people that work for the city or that use municipal facilities to object to that.

THIS^^ and I am a Republican. Who gives a crap if the board passed a non binding resolution that is already in practice due to common courtesy. Starkville has had a large gay population for several years, and I've never once seen someone be hateful towards one of them. Bigotry is not going to turn someone straight.

Absolutely. JT is a prime example of someone who is woefully out of touch with both cultural and generational norms - like a caricature of the same person whining about progression 20 years ago. He talks about "the good ole days" like he's channeling his inner Ross Barnett. I really don't enjoy his radio show, and if he chooses not to spend money in the town I call home, then so be it; he won't be missed.

Is the guy a rube? Yeah, most likely. But what you have to remember is the guy makes a living from advertising. His core demographic is made of the kind of people that love getting riled up for a "cause". The more he can whip people into a frenzy, the better his business. His loyal listeners will go out and buy a dozen packs of Country Pleasin' this weekend, because they deem them to be on the right of side of the issue and that's more than likely what's driving his "opinion".

It's absolutely an idiotic thing to say. But again, consider the motive.

I really hope JT is not as simpleminded as he sounds. Surely he is catering to

certain listeners, if not, he really is an idiot. Years back, when Dave was on the show, he kept JT somewhat grounded. Now all JT talks about is Liberal this, Liberal that, their taking our guns, perceived attacks on Christians and Christmas, and other wedge issues. He really is just a Sean/Glen/Rush/Sarachelle Bocklin wannabe. I used to listen to him while traveling for work, but now his show consists of black helicopters circling like vultures all attacking Mom, God and apple pie. I find his constant attacks on public education especially annoying given his constant expression of his love for private academies and MRA in particular.

I will try to listen occasionally, but after about 3 minutes he will say something stupid like he did today and I usually will utter 17 you at the radio and go back to Deep Tracks. Thank God for XM Radio

What you don't understand is when it comes to politics and social issues people are not as honest as you think when talking to them. They will go with the crowd so they will not be ridiculed. I am not one of those. I will tell you to your face I don't care one way or another. In few months this could all be forgotten but if all the religious leaders in the tri area ask their congregation to boycott Starkville, Starkville will get hurt and the business owners will raise all kind of hell. College students come and go and they are usually a little more liberal then the folks who live in the area full time and these are the folks who are going to be shopping during the summer and other months school is out. You don't want to make this folks angry.

Also it is obvious you are no a business owner. You can't do without anyone if you are. Side note I will eat and shop in starkville when I am there because I don't care.

Except that lots of religious leaders will be explicitly for this and most of the ones who aren't still aren't going to advocate boycotting an entire city because some alderman made a resolution. And even if some of them did, I don't think many people in their congregations are just going to blindly cut Starkville out of their lives entirely.

I realize you were just presenting a hypothetical, but it was just way too implausible to even be worth discussing.

What an idiot

JT is a bigot, and a simple minded idiot. 50 years ago they were killing people in oxford over the enrollment of a black man. A year later, MSU defied an order from the governor in order to travel to Michigan to plan an integrated basketball team. I am proud that my town and my university takes the lead in doing what is right in a state where it do what is right is not always popular. I must say that I am equally please to see other contributors to my message-board-of choice make positive and supportive comments on this issue.

Listening to Supertalk while running some lunchtime errands and JT went off on Starkville over this. It's a meaningless resolution but, according to JT, people will quit spending money here over it.

I agree wholeheartedly. It makes me extremely proud when reading all the support being displayed on this board. Have y’all ever read the “general discussion” on OM Spirit (basically their political/religious rant page)? That sh(i)t will literally make your skin crawl.

Starkville is probably, up there with Ocean Springs, one of the most progressive forward thinking towns in Mississippi. I’m happy to call it my home.

Starkville isn't a Christian state, and I don't think a lot of people come to terms with that... America as a whole I mean. You can't have the government out of your life (super conservative) and insist they stick to your moral code that homosexuality sends you straight to hell, damning them from the public eye. It's entirely hypocritical for these Tea Party-types to sit here and claim Obama is stealing my money, the poor are robbing me blind, I'm free to own firearms if I choose, but gays shouldn't be allowed to marry because it says so in the bible (other things than gay marriage, the list of problems I have with church separation in government goes on... And I'm a Christian).

Mississippi is one of the only states in America where someone can be fired for being gay. Most of our fellow ignorant southern states even have safeguards against this.

Starkville SHOULD be the beacon of reasonable government in our state. We're the only 17ers who can claim we haven't ruined anything from the governor's chair.

Whole thing was a publicity stunt for Wiseman. He gets a resolution passed that was brought up out of the blue for no reason, he makes some comments afterwards, he makes State and National News and then the very next night, he's the surprise speaker for the Democrats rebuttal to the Governors State of the State speech. Coincidence, I think not. The Democrats are setting the stage for Parker to run for a higher office.

It's really getting to be an old saw for people who equate moral conservatism with the Tea Party and "Tea-Party types" Once again, Tea is an acronym for Taxed enough Already: it is fiscal conservatism which states that the size of government has more do to with over-spending than under taxation. Reduce spending before you increase my taxes.

I am so freakin sick of politics and the games

What was the purpose of that resolution? Has it been a problem in Starkville? If you are the mayor and city council... Fix the damn streets and infrastructure, keep the public safe with competent and trained law enforcement and fire protection, attract business and industry, and account for all tax money in and out. Why play the games of passing a resolution that will stirr up some people like this for apparently no other reason than to play a political game prior to the response to the governor's speech. I'm just sick of the games, posturing, fake sympathy, finger pointing, and ******** that has accelerated to warp speed in the past 10 years while this country is taking step after step backward in comparison to others. This was just another game played and time as well as resources wasted while doing it. Run the damn city. Cut a few ribbons, kiss a couple babies, and don't waste time on the city's dime.

Regardless of what the founders originally intended, it has been conclusively demonstrated that the Tea Party label and biblical social conservatism are one and the same nowadays. Just look at the membership of the Tea Party Caucus in Congress. All Bible thumpers and there's few if any Bible thumpers who aren't in it.

Hattiesburg can't even host honest and fair elections. Nor can they keep up with city owned gas cards. Something as simple as this would be too much for city council to wrap their brains around.

I wasn't thinking of Paul when I said that. I had Michelle Bachmann in mind, and you sir cannot tell me that she wouldn't put the 10 commandments into the amendments if she could. Whatever it started out as, it's not that anymore. It's people going over to Egypt on the government's dime to go on TV and tell them how great America is.

Uh...Rand Paul is against gay marriage for religious reasons, even comparing homosexuals to bestiality. Michelle Bachmann, Ted Cruz, etc. have made similar statements. Bible thumpers.

There's nothing unbiblical about drug legalization, and it's not like there's wide support among Tea Partiers outside of some of them supporting decriminalization of small amounts of marijuana. Even rand Paul says don't legalize pot, just don't prosecute small time users...

So, basically, the resolution says they will uphold the constitution. Radical idea.
