Due to the recent notice of price increase, my Dad (a 30+ year subscriber) is thinking about cancelling his subscription but he needs some alternative places to get local news (i.e., local websites). I mentioned to him YallPolitics.com, WAPT.com and JacksonFreePress.com. What are some other websites that are focused on Central Mississippi news and events?

Like most older people, he reads the obituaries religiously. This is a must have for him. If he can't find another source for metro area obituaries, he'll likely go down with the Clarion Ledger ship.

You mentioned JFP. I read their website a while a few days ago and was pleasantly surprised. Just ignore their editorials and you'll be good. They have a decent news site. I read some news over there that I hadn't known about. I think its a good substitute.

In the absence of the CL, I hope JFP can pick up the slack a little more such as picking up the obit's. The obit's are gravy for the CL. People just send them in and the CL reprints them. I suppose its more up to people taking initiative to send the info to JFP.

As far as obits are concerned, they're under the legacy.com domain which is separate from Gannett/Clarion-Ledger so you might want to see if they'll be affected by the Clarion-Ledger's new subscriber status.

even after the Times and the other state newspapers go to 3 days a week publishing and pay web sites. Jackson may be doing the same.
