Clem has lost 29 players to portal since 2020.

The top schools who Hoover-up 4 and 5 star players are finding that the top raked recruits aren't happy sitting on the bench. They get-up and go now.

“Guys aren’t patient much anymore,” Swinney said. “That’s the world we live in.”

When I saw the point spread down to 12, I thought Duke had a chance to squeak one out. They dominated in the 2H!

scholarships should be limited to 65 max to spread the wealth and slow this type of movement imho

He has to change. His way won't work anymore. I don't think he uses the portal very often himself.

Dabo is counting the days until Saban retires.
I wouldn't be so sure he'll be the replacement. He could be but I don't think it's a guarantee.

I've said I think he needs to demonstrate that he can replace staff and not miss a beat. I thought Venables would be a big loss for them and it seems like that so far. Everyone assumes it just like clockwork and easy to replace staff because Saban is so good at it but most coaches aren't Saban. I didn't think much of Orgeron before he won the title or after and as soon as he lost Brady/Aranda it all fell apart. Same for Chizik with the loss of Malzahn. I don't think Dabo is as bad like those guys but he is a more "CEO" type coach and getting those coordinator hires right is important.

Saban has also shown some willingness to adapt, Dabo not so much. Going with in house replacements before and not willing to use the portal either.

He would be crazy to go there
Expectations through the roof
Following in arguably the GOAT's footsteps

He's got it good at Clemson
Real good
Spot on.

Though on a personal note, I don’t know that there’s been a more overrated program than Clemson since Lawrence left

Generational QB's are hard to replace
FSU hasn't been the same since Jameis left, same with UF since Tebow graduated

Clemson has never recruited at a consistenly high level for some reason
Which makes the need for portal and NIL even more important for them

Not saying they are, however that hasn't stopped Clemson from being pre-season top 10 the last 2 years post Lawrence.

There's always an overrated ACC program it seems, for years it was VT

Playing in the ACC has certainly helped as the league has been "meh" forever

Looks like UNC and FSU will be carrying the water for the ACC this season.
If J. Trav stays healthy and the D shows any semblance of life, the Noles are a playoff team
The offense is electric, capable of putting up 1990's FSU video game type numbers every week

Not sure about UNC as I haven't researched them
I'd be skeptical of any team with Mac Brown (and without Vince Young), but the coastal is again weak, and UNC has been on the verge of breaking out for what seems like forever

No doubt FSU will compete for a playoff spot. The win against LSU is very good and will carry weight all year unless LSU tanks. UNC could be dangerous and is probably the second best ACC team right now especially if they get that transfer kid eligible.

you guys forget how well the former BE teams did in the ACC for the first 4-5yrs. ACC is usually 1 maybe 2 schools. RU would do well in that league but we are where we belong. We'll get better, just need a better coach

That kid should 100 % be able to play, NCAA once again showing their ineptitude

This is what I was referring to above and have mentioned with regards to other things. Whether it's portal or style of offense or clock rules or type of hits allowed in a game, etc..you have to be willing/able to adapt or you run the risk being left behind.

Article is paywall but some excerpts:

He prefers to build his roster through high school recruiting, as most coaches do. But unlike most coaches, Swinney wants to do it exclusively that way, resisting the urge to plug roster holes with outside help that might disrupt the culture.

But for Clemson, that’s not enough.

Frankly, it’s not enough for most programs. The early days of the 2023 season have offered countless examples of coaches expertly sifting through the portal and finding the right players at the right positions to boost their current rosters. Deion Sanders did it (albeit in an extreme way) to turn a one-win Colorado team into must-see TV seemingly overnight. Texas State head coach GJ Kinne flipped his roster to pave the way for the Bobcats’ massive upset of Baylor in Week 1. Lane Kiffin has done it to help build up Ole Miss.

These are the coaches who see and embrace where college football is in 2023. Swinney does not. He’s learning the hard way that being anti-progress is an organization killer.

This sport is constantly evolving, and the coaches who recognize that and adapt quickly are the ones who thrive. A decade ago, Alabama coach Nick Saban realized that he needed to open up his offense to compete for national titles, and he did just that by hiring Kiffin as offensive coordinator in 2014. “I remember him saying, ‘I feel like our offense is a Lamborghini, but it’s headed off a cliff,’ meaning we’ve got these great players, but are behind the times in what we’re doing,” Kiffin once told ESPN. “So, we needed to change directions.”

Clemson and Dabo have enough stain and intelligence not to let this linger past this year
Plus, their Boosters won't tolerate it
IPTAY is a machine and has little patience
Throw in an impending move to the SEC/B1G and they cannot afford to linger in mediocrity

Which is really why we should have hit the portal. HARD.

Kids want to play. Immediately.

100% immediate playing time and the BIG is something we can sell

Greg needs to sell!!!!!!!
They're only buying if you pay them. The staff tried to get a right tackle in here but was outbid for anyone that was an upgrade. It's not hard to understand, they simply don't have the resources to pull off mass transfer portal acquisitions.

Now. The portal was here before NIL and we had playing time. It simply wasn't attacked the way it should have been.

Speaking of.. just noticed that kid Chris johnson Jr was commited here for a second. Dam he could have gotten those 20 carries jashawn Benjamin got except with his 10.2 100m speed. He's like 5th string rb at Miami, I believe he is 1st team kick return for them though..smh moving forward those type of skill players are needed especially to fast forward a rebuild...

Someone down there has money. They're building a new football performance center. Don't know who, but someone's donating a lot of money toward that.
I think NIL gets overplayed. Yes it is used for some of the top ends players but for most others I think there is a balance of playing time/opportunity/fit etc..if there’s money it isnt at some astronomical level.

I hate Duke in hoops because of Ratface, but I hate Clemson in football much more than Duke in football, so enjoyed watching Duke beat them. Also have never been a fan of Swinney.
Why the MK hate ? You think he was any different from Izzo, Self, Williams, Calhoun etc ?
