OT: Clemson in full meltdown

I think NIL gets overplayed. Yes it is used for some of the top ends players but for most others I think there is a balance of playing time/opportunity/fit etc..if there’s money it isnt at some astronomical level.
Here we go. An article on GJ Kinne and his use of the portal both at Incarnate Word and Texas State. At IW they literally didn’t have the money to subscribe to multiple transfer portal research platforms so had to use their friends at other schools and use their logins lol. Did some pot of gold suddenly emerge at Texas State lol. I doubt it. Might not be as strapped as that but more likely they just did their research and found fits for their scheme.

It’s likely the same at other schools too. Some of the movement is NIL and some of it is just playing time, fit and opportunity.

From the article:

Such is life as a new head coach in modern football. The old days of turning over a roster in three or four recruiting cycles are disappearing in the rear-view mirror.

It is a game within a game,” Kinne said of roster building on the fly. “It is scary. That’s why you must do a lot of research.”

Programs can subscribe to websites that track transfers and help sift through data and tape to identify potential fits. One of the big ones is ran by PFF. The problem for Kinne at UIW was cost. They couldn’t afford multiple subscriptions to multiple platforms, so Kinne did what coaches do in times of adversity – rely on their network.

“We had UTSA’s log in and UCF’s log in and even something from Hawaii,” Kinne chuckled. “Anyone can look good on a highlight from practice or something. PFF tells the truth. It helps us get a better idea of how much someone has played and to view actual footage.”

Of the 51 new signees, 37 are transfers. Seven more are from the JUCO ranks, and the other seven are straight out of high school – a welcomed change in San Marcos. Eighteen of the 37 transfers came from Power Five programs, which is tied for the most in FBS. Twelve signed from the FCS level, including nine from UIW. Most of them had the same thing in common – production.

Winning at the FBS level requires risk. Some coaches see the transfer portal as a way to exchange each other’s waste. Kinne views it as an opportunity. Not one without a downside, but one with plenty of upside for those with the right eye – and approach. The goal isn’t to bat 1.000. The goal is lead the league in hitting percentage.

you guys forget how well the former BE teams did in the ACC for the first 4-5yrs. ACC is usually 1 maybe 2 schools. RU would do well in that league but we are where we belong. We'll get better, just need a better coach

Yes I noticed that when you played them in a bowl game 2 years ago.

What was the Final------40-2 ?

More on Kinne, part of a longer pod.

If you hear the longer interview he talked about TJ Finley and how he just had to get into an offense that fits and how their WR from Utah Tech was also sold on the style of offense and do you want to be on the bench or a place where you’re going to get the ball in your hands.

Hey, Notre Dame could graduate their 22 starters and still make the preseason Top 15
Ain’t it the truth…

I’ll never forget coaching Middle school lacrosse the year after I graduated college and one of my players seeing a notre dame shirt on one of the opponents during pre game and a 12 year old kid in front of every parent, teammate, referee, etc at the top of his lungs screams ‘Hey Coach! What do Notre Dame and Marijuana have in common? They both get SMOKED in a bowl!’…😂😂😂

I genuinely could not contain my laughter despite needing to obviously reprimand the kid after. Though years later I did see him and admitted I was proud😂

I can tell you why I don't like him. He had no objection to the ACC destroying the Big East with their raids, and then cried when the B1G took Maryland away.
Fair point, but as should be crystal clear by now only the money matters to the presidents and boards. Coach opinions carry no weight, not even his. It’s business, follow the money.

TD irish, Melton and Pacheco did not play in game. Still think Pacheco would have had big game vs them and we had like 6 days to get ready. Would you like to play Georgia with like 5 days to get ready in bowl game? Game at half was close. The Rutgers punter was in Australia and had to fly back.

Speaking of.. just noticed that kid Chris johnson Jr was commited here for a second. Dam he could have gotten those 20 carries jashawn Benjamin got except with his 10.2 100m speed. He's like 5th string rb at Miami, I believe he is 1st team kick return for them though..smh moving forward those type of skill players are needed especially to fast forward a rebuild...
If he's 5th string at Miami how would he have an impact for us in the BIG?

I thought TD Irish was usually a better visiting fan poster than this comment. But this is an epic bad take on his/her part.

It was 20-10 at the half. From the ESPN article about the game, Rutgers had two practices in the bubble (our indoor facility) before flying to Florida, where we had two more practices. We were facing a team that was #15 in the final poll of the season when we were 5-7 coming into the game. As stated above, our two best playmakers on offense sat out the game as they were preparing for the draft.

So yeah, you got us. We were not competitive in a bowl game against the #3 team in the ACC that season when we had four practices to prepare after guys thought they were done playing football close to a month before the game. Guess that shows we could never compete in the ACC.

TBH I don't know, I just love speed...and I'm most likely just associating this kid with Chris johnson from the Titans lol...also the fact he decommited from Rutgers for Miami...I'm assuming Miami has better skill guys than Rutgers and I feel skill players with speed can allow a subpar team to compete and even beat top ranked teams..get a couple of these in the transfer portal with a year older oline, defense and wimsatt, next year ru can upset some teams .

I am a better visitor normally but guys trashing the ACC and thumping their chests on the Big Ten make me laugh.

Here are the facts-----in the last 10 years in the 2 sports that count the Big Ten has won 1 National Championship.

The ACC has won 6------ 3 in hoops from 3 dfferent schools and 3 in football from 2.

The Big Ten football champion last year lost to TCU in the semis who had 65 hung on them in the Final.

Win something and then chirp.

Not only that, but they use and abuse whatever conference is willing to let ND dictate terms. It’s the ACC now and was the Big East previously. Given that, sort of weird to see a ND fan taking up an argument for any conference.

Was my original thought. Doubt many from the ACC would take a similar stance.

Our last three games vs the ACC (including our bowl game against a division champion that you referenced ), we are 2-1 including two road wins at Syracuse and BC.

Point was, his position in these matters was certainly going to be what's best for Duke. I don't think that's a good reason to dislike him.

This is kinda simple. He had no problem with wrecking a different league to gain advantage in his. But then when the tables got turned, he whined loudly about. The fact that he isn't the decision-maker doesn't mean that his behavior isn't objectionable.

But hey, in the grand scheme of things, he's a retired basketball coach. You can like him, I can dislike him. Doesn't change the world of college sports much these days.

Just sayin’ I doubt any other coaches would have done or said differently. There’s no altruism. College sports is a me-me industry, all parties pursuing their best interests. I wouldn’t expect otherwise from anyone.

So do you really think that Rutgers wouldn't have a better record if they played in the ACC? Since 2006 Ru is 9-9 in games vs. ACC teams (including bowl games). That takes into account the Flood/Ash years too.

Not all of us----far from it.

The reality is we're a program who should win 9-10 per year and every now and then make a run at the Playoffs----and that's OK. We've done that.

We're in a diiferent day and age now. The Portal and NIL have seen to that.

We don't function well in those areas. Undergrad transfers lose too many credits or we can't touch them for admission. Our better guys don't make 10 % of what some guys are getting through NIL at many schools. Grad transfers is an area we're decent at.

The elite HS kid of today is looking for 3 years of school and the NFL.

Why go to South Bend , Indiana where you're treated like every other student and made to take the same course load as everyone else for 2 years ?

But if the degree is important to you and you want a National Network that will open a ton of doors for you it's a helluva place.

Not many of the elites IMO are thinking along those lines.

ignore him, gets tiring schooling him

first it was the Irish play a super tough schedule; dispelled that one
then comes here and comments without actually reading; moron
to add further embarrassment on him, Irish actually don't win anything but says they do; dumbass

Irish....remember at Pinstripe telling a group of their fans it must have been brutal driving from Ohio for the team and they were all like YUP. hahahahaha Irish suck, arrogance is only equaled by Michigan fans. that says something

Dabo isn't a fan of NIL or the portal
He may have to change his approach, especially w/Clemson's impending departure of the ACC B10/SEC

Yes college football is changing with successful coaches now adapting to the Portal and NIL for players.

Most highly ranked players want to play in the NFL and are no longer happy to sit on the bench for a couple of years. They will go to the teams that will play them so they can get their stats up.

Opportunities to leave a school now exist and many players are taking them.

Pitt has been fortunate with the portal for getting our starting QB's. Last year it was Slovis from USC and this year its Phil Jurkovec (Rival 4-Star) originally signing with ND. Our back up QB now was a transfer from Penn State, Christian Veilleux. Kenny Pickett was the last QB who came in and played and developed.

Pitt was very fortunate this year to recruit the Top Football prospect out of NJ, Yasin Willis Rivals 4-star RB from Montvale NJ (St Joseph). If he does sign with Pitt i'm sure he will be playing and not sitting on the bench.

Good luck this football season.

You guys are also having a very good recruiting year at this time 23 recruits and 31 national ranking.

Greg is getting some good recruits. Should soon translate into more W's.

Getting a good HC and Staff and getting them to stay is critical for success.

Not sure how our season is going to play out with Cinci, West Virginia and Notre Dame and our regular ACC slate including Florida State.

I think Jerkovec is the real deal so I think we should be competitive with all the teams we play.
Hard to win without a good QB.

Hoping for a winning record and a Bowl Game.
